It was a hot and humid day in Hawkins, Indiana. The party, Nancy, Jonathan, Steve, and Robin we to the lake to enjoy the summer, like all teens should. Robin and Dustin got a ride from Steve, bringing along various watermelons, s’mores ingredients, a cooler with various drinks, and the grill. Everyone brought something from chips, games, meat, and bread. It took a lot of planning, but the young adults were able to get the day off from their respective jobs.
The Party instantly ran to each other, planning what they were going to be doing, sitting at a wooden table. The chaperones, got everything out of their cars, letting the children enjoy themselves. Soon, the young adults joined them, Steve and Jonathan started the grill, while Nancy and Robin adjusted the food in the table.
The lake wasn’t packed, but there were a couple groups of families and young adults. Robin sat next to Will, nodding at him in acknowledgment, to which the boy returned with a small smile. After some bickering with Jonathan, Steve grumblingly sat beside his best friend.
“They kicked you out?” Robin asked, popping grapes–that Nancy brought, into her mouth.
“sTeVe! tHaT’s NoT hOw YoU dO iT!” Steve mimicked the older Byers, grabbing some grapes as well.
“Don’t worry Dingus,” Robin spoke, stuffing her mouth with grapes, making a face at Dustin who made a face at her.
Steve, arched his brow at his friend, curious of what would follow, which caused her to roll her eyes.
“Now, we can focus on what really matters,” Robin reached in her messenger bag and pulled out new releases of the comics her and Steve started together.
Steve grinned, reaching for the comic book to which Robin scooted closer to him so they both could read it. The Party looked at them and smiled, thinking the two looked cute together, but Will grimaced and looked away. The action didn’t go unnoticed by Robin though.
After reading, Steve and Robin began to discuss what might happen in the next volume, complaining about certain moments, when a girl came up to them.
“Uhm, hi! I couldn’t help but hear and see you two have the latest issue of *insert comic title*, I was wondering if I could borrow it? I’ll return it as soon as I’m done!” The girl, who looked about their age asked.
“N-” Steve started, only to be cut off by Robin.
“Yeah! Here, enjoy!” Robin answered, smiling widely at the girl.
“Thanks so much!” The girl exclaimed, returning the smile before leaving.
“Why’d you do that for?” Steve asked his best friend.
“To say no to such a pretty girl, no way, Dingus!” Robin stated in a matter-of-fact tone.
Steve quickly checked to see if the Party or the cooking couple had heard her. Seeing as no one reacted, he calmed down, but, little did they know Will actually heard her.
“She was pretty cute, think you’ll make a move?” Steve asked her quietly.
“Make a move? In this shit town? They’ll have me lynched,” Robin joked, reaching over for more grapes.
“I highly doubt that would happen,” Steve rebutted, grabbing grapes as well.
Robin gave him a look, “Okay, maybe it would, but I wouldn’t let that happen ya’know that Binnie.” Steve assured her.
Robin groaned at the nickname but smiled nonetheless. The two went back to talking about the comic when the girl returned.
“Thank so much, guys! Whatta surprise right?” The girl spoke as she handed the comic book to Robin.
“Yeah! We were just talking about it, care to join?” Steve asked the girl, smiling proudly to himself when the girl agreed.
The three of them were going on and on about the characters, debating on who would win, hating on specific characters. Steve was slowly removing himself from the conversation, which led to Robin and the girl, whose name was Vinny, to have the conversation to themselves.
When Vinny left, Steve came back to his spot, handing Robin a hamburger. Robin smiled cheekily at him, showing him the comic book.
“So you got your comic book back, what of it?” Steve asked unsure of what she was showing him.
“No, Dingus, Vinny gave me her number!” Robin paraded.
“Aye! Way to go Bins!” Steve cheered loudly, gaining looks from the others.
“Shut up, Dingus!” Robin scolded, nonetheless they performed their handshake they created one day at work.
The whole scene didn’t go unnoticed by Will, who looked at Robin with admiration in his eyes.

Robin had noticed the young Byers would look at her with a glint in his eyes that she couldn’t quite decipher, every time he saw her. At first, she thought that the young boy had developed a crush on her, as he would always look at her, sit by her, copy what she’d say, and always look for her approval. Soon, she discarded that idea when she noticed Will’s reaction to generic hetero shit.
Everyone was at the Byers home, watching movies and relaxing. Robin stuck with Steve like always and as usual, Will sat next to her, giving her a smile. The couples of the group were sitting by each other, doing couple stuff. In one instance, one of the couples professed their love which made the young boy scrunch his nose in distaste.
“Ew, gross!” Robin called out, making gagging noises.
Will looked up at her, to which she smiled down at him and winked. Will then joined her every time the gang did some hetero stuff. Robin didn’t think much of it but didn’t discard the possibility that he may be on the same boat as her.
It became clear to her when the group kept telling Will he’d understand when he gets a girlfriend. She saw how disgusted Will looked, and how he recoiled at the idea. Robin saw herself as a young questioning teen through Will.
“He doesn’t need a girlfriend to know what you guys feel. Come on, this isn’t the 50s, pride month exists ya’know, it has since ‘69.” Robin boldly informed the group, making Will look up to her in admiration.
“Are you assuming he’s gay? He’s just not ready for dating yet!” Jonathan snapped at Robin.
She had heard that one too many times, from family and friends, and it infuriated her. Especially when she noticed how Will flinched at his brother’s tone.
“Oh please! You say it like it’s a bad thing, Byers!” Robin exclaimed, standing up which Jonathan followed.
“Guys–” Steve tried to calm you two down but was cut off by Jonathan.
“People already think we’re weird! Now that would just be frosting on the cake!” Jonathan barked, making Robin fume in anger.
“Who cares? Fuck them! They can shove their hetero ideologies up their ass! Homosexuality exists Byers, and it has for many years, it’s not gonna go away!” Robin yelled, getting her stuff making her way to the door.
“Why are you so riled up about this? It’s not like you–” Jonathan got cut off by Robin.
“Yes, I am. You wanna know why I’m riled up about this? Because I’m tired of having to hide who I am, and having to hear or get hetero norms shoved down my and other people’s throats!” Robin confessed before storming out the door, followed by Steve.
Safe to say that an uncomfortable silence wrapped around the group, but a small smile crept up on Will’s face. He wasn’t alone.

The group hadn’t reunited since that day, so it came to a surprise for Robin when Will came to her work one day. She had seen how he was unsure on whether or not to enter, but he braced himself and entered the movie rental store. He approach the counter where she stood, looking very anxious.
“What’s up kid? You look like your gonna piss yourself,” Robin half-heartedly joked, picking up the boy’s nervousness.
“Uhm, c-can I t-talk to y-you?” Will stuttered, playing with hands not meeting Robin’s gaze.
“Yeah sure, I’m off in five minutes,” Robin informed him, to which Will nodded and went to go look around the shop.
“Alright, kid, I’m off!” Robin informed Will, who got startled.
“o-oh!” was all Will could choke out.
“Come on, let’s go somewhere else,” Robin said softly, heading to the front doors of the shop.
The two of them walked to a nearby park, sitting at an isolated bench.
“So, what’s up?” Robin asked, staring at him inquisitively.
“Um,” Will started, not knowing how to say what he had sought you for.
Will began to play with his hands that were resting on the table. Robin placed her hand on his, squeezing it gently.
“Whatever it is you want to tell me, just know I won’t think differently of you,” Robin assured him, soothing the boy’s nerves.
“i-I think… I think I-I’m… I’m…” Will stuttered out, not being able to will himself to say it.
Tears filled his eyes, making the boy look down at his lap. He wanted to be confident like you had back at his house. He wanted to be as bold as you, but he couldn’t.
Robin got up, making the boy worry, but she sat beside him and pulled him into a bear hug.
“It’s okay, it’s hard to admit it openly, it’s okay. One day, we’ll be able to parade it to the world, but for now, we’ll take one step at a time,” Robin reassured the young boy, caressing his hair and rubbing circles on his back.
The boy clung to her and cried. He cried because of how accepting you were. He cried because he felt the weight, he didn’t know he had, lift off his shoulders. He cried because this was the first time he came out to anyone. He cried because she didn’t push him away. He cried because finally there was someone who understood what he was going through.

Time had passed, seasons changed, but two teens found themselves. Today was the day. Will Byers was going to come out to his family. Of course that included the Party and the young adults. Will had told Robin all about it and wished for her to be there with him, for support.
Robin had come out to her family a week prior, which made the young Byers feel courage and fear. Since Hawkins was a narrow-minded town, Robin got kicked out of her house, but she could care less about that. It was liberating. She no longer had to hide, she could do as she pleased. She could now take Vinny on dates, without having to worry about her parents finding out. She was free, and god did that feel great.
She now lived in a crappy apartment with Steve, who was her support system that day. Since he supported her his family isolated him, not long after the two of them were living in the crappy apartment, but they couldn’t be anymore happier. The day she confessed, Robin went to the Byers to speak with WIll. Upon seeing how happy she was, Will decided that if his role model could do it then hell, he could too.
Now surrounded by the people he loved dearly, Will now doubted he could do this. Pulling Robin to his room, he gently shut the door.
“I can’t do this!” Will cried, walking around anxiously.
Grabbing him by the shoulders, Robin looked at him.
“Yes, you can Will.” She reassured the young boy.
“What if they hate me?! What if they don’t want me here anymore?!” Will cried, hugging Robin.
“If they do that, then, well, fuck ‘em. You’ll love whoever you love, who cares what they say, they can’t change you. This is who you are Will, and if they can’t accept you for who you are, then you’re better off without them.” Robin told the boy, hugging him.
“And if they kick me out?” Will said in a small voice.
“Then, Steve and I will officially adopt a child. It’s not like we haven’t unofficially adopted Henderson and Erica, one more child won’t hurt.” Robin assured the boy, rubbing circles on his back.
Will laughed, breaking away from the hug. Wiping away his tears, he smiled at you.
“I’m ready.” He said confidently.
It’s safe to say that Steve and Robin didn’t need to adopt Will Byers, even though they were more than ready to. The confession was full of tears, hugs, tears, hugs, ugly ass sobs from Robin and Will as they hugged each other in support and proudness.
Robin was happy that the young boy had the support and love from his family, something she wished she had too, but her new family made up for the lack of. Will was happy that his family accepted him, but most of all he was happy that Robin was with him every step of the way, being a supportive older sister to him.

“Heard Byers likes boys,” someone murmured at school.
“Yeah, I do, who cares?” Will snapped back, just as boldly as his older sister had long ago at his house.
He was no longer going to hide, just like his older sister, he would embrace himself and not shy away from who he was. He was Will Byers. Who cares if he liked boys? Who cares if he was gay? It wouldn’t change the fact he is and will always be, William “Will” Byers.
