this is such an interesting little tidbit of information. obviously azazel wasn't possessing john at the time he fed sam his blood and JDM was only acting as a stand-in, but from a meta perspective i think it's interesting that sam is again victimized by his family. the incestuous kiss between mary and azazel (samuel) that sealed sam's fate leads to an incestuous exchange of fluids between sam and azazel (john). azazel exploits the family ties of the winchesters like psychological warfare, always blurring the lines between familial and sexual: compare azazel possessing john in devil's trap and using his body to harm dean, everything he says laced with a sexual undertone. again and again, azazel acts in a way that destroys boundaries in irreparable ways and in the end creates the conditions under which the winchesters develop their incestuous relationships with each other.

so yeah great casting choice there. fucked up from day one 💖

why do you do this to me……….dean spends all of 1x20-1x21 trying to get john alone and john refuses bc he’s so intent on his suicide mission. letting dean get his hopes up would be a cruelty, and it would just cloud his own judgment, make it harder to make the hard choices. but he does kiss him one last time in 2x01 <3

it's a judas kiss. soft and sweet until he pulls back and tells dean he may have to kill the brother whose safety was made his life's mission. betrayed that john would save him, just to stab him in the heart.

Sam and Dean went no contact those two years bc Sam thought Dean visiting him at Stanford and calling semi-regularly meant him and John were no longer Together.

One night when Dean is visiting, he overhears him talking to John on the phone and realizes this is not the case and they have a huge fight about it.

1x16 coda that is canon in my mind: dean sneaking out after sam is asleep for the night to meet john in the parking lot for a quickie. is it good sex? no. do they fight? yes. does dean feel better afterwards? no. <3

got a real bad hankerin' for some "devil's trap/in my time of dying" john pov deanjohn where they got into some kind of lover's tiff right before they split up on their last respective pre-pilot cases and haven't had a minute alone to reconcile before things go the deadly kind'a sideways. (half the reason dean waits a hit minute before he drives cross country to get sam involved is because his boyfriendad was mad at him last time they spoke and maybe he's just icing dean out; it's not until he gets The Voicemail that he determines the problem is something Other than john's general pettiness.)

it’s so funny to me how sam and dean’s whole incestuous codependency thing stays the same throughout the whole show. they’re sweet and funny and lighthearted with each other most of the time but there are a bunch of very heavy moments when you see that they are not normal and very weird about each other. and in the first few seasons it all fits the family horror vibe of the show.

but then the show stops being a horror show at some point and then the whole being weird and incesty for each other thing becomes (imo) totally incongruous with an unremarkably written brightly lit cw action adventure show. it just puts into stark contrast exactly how fucked up they are (and by fucked up i mean totally obsessed with each other in a lovely and tender way). to me the late seasons are like walking into a grocery store and seeing some guys having sex in the cereal isle. like is anyone else seeing this…

He always had a strange scent Bill remembers. You'd think it would be his expression, but if Bill remembered every veteran who came into his bar with the haunted look of someone who'd lost, he wouldn't have space to fill his head with anything else he needed.

He wasn't a regular either, Bill had only seen the guy once. Once was enough though to imprint it permanently on his brain. Every time he picked up his new nephew he thought back to the haunted man in that bar and the scent he carried with him.
