The Quiet of Us

You’ve found yourself at the kitchen sink again, rinsing off the dishes after another cozy meal with the triplets. As you wash, you hand the plates over to Chris, who dries them off and puts them away. There’s an easy rhythm to the task, the two of you working side by side in a peaceful silence, just enjoying each other’s company.

"I think we just ate more pasta than we should’ve," Chris mumbles as he steps up behind you, his arms sliding around your waist, and his chin resting on your shoulder.

"Well, you’re the one who suggested doubling the recipe so Nick and Matt could eat, too," you tease softly, your voice light.

Chris chuckles and sighs, nuzzling his face into your neck. "I love having everyone together. It’s the best part of the day," he admits, his breath warm against your skin.

You smile and laugh, drying your hands on the dish rag. You turn around in his arms, facing him, and gently stroke his cheek with your fingers. You lean in for a soft kiss, your lips brushing his before you pull away, your gaze lingering for just a moment longer.

"Ready for bed, sweetheart?" you ask, your voice gentle, barely more than a murmur.

He doesn’t need to say anything—his nod says it all. You take his hand and guide him down the hallway toward your bedroom.

Once inside, you crawl into bed, and Chris follows, settling in beside you.

Outside, the rain taps softly against the window, the gentle hum of the air conditioner filling the background. You both lie close together, your breaths mingling in the quiet. His arms tighten around you, pulling you in just a little bit closer, and your fingers absentmindedly trace patterns on his arm, a subtle comfort.

"I could stay like this forever," he whispers, his voice soft as he presses his face into your chest. "Just you and me."

You smile, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "Go to sleep, sweetheart," you reply quietly, your voice blending with the calm of the night.

With a final, contented sigh, you close your eyes, letting your breathing sync with his. It’s a simple moment, but it feels like everything you need in that instant.
