The problem was this: Kepler wanted to be a part of Jacobi’s life. To be a part of it, yes, but not to own it.

“You’re not my commanding officer anymore, Warren,” Jacobi said when he came home. It was late and he was drunk, but not quite as late, not quite as drunk as he would’ve been once upon a time. “You’re not even my… You’re just my flatmate.”

 Yeah. Yeah, okay.

 AKA I don't like the "death as redemption" trope, so I decided Kepler needs to live with his mistakes.

Post-canon Kepler lives fic is FINALLY FINISHED!

for #11, fics that I think deserve more reads:

on the shorter side is Cherubim by @vanilla-phantomhive, which was one of my favorite fics from last year and packs such a delicious punch in sub-5K.

on the longer side: the counterfeits by @ninety6tears, which is a novel-length spirk AU of a Tana French novel that I really love. it was so good, and in my humble opinion the plot makes more sense in a sci-fi setting than in real-world-on-earth Dublin.

also on the longer side: the survivors by Eligh (who I can't find on tumblr), which is an AOS AU with one of the coolest original alien species i've ever encountered.

for #14, my favorite fic???? augh!! oh god!! how can i decide between them????? i'm going to go instead with some bookmarks of mine that i haven't recced before:

alien anatomy by sangwin; i love an AOS academy AU and this one is excellent.

a weary traveler by @bamfspock - time travel shenanigans that makes complete sense in the end. it's so good.

stick to the promise by @daunvaliant - fascinating vulcan gender and cultural worldbuilding

Fireworks. That was how it felt when their fingers brushed. Jacobi had spent so much of the past year scolding his racing heart; he’s your boss for god’s sake (no, don’t think about how hot that is, behave, Daniel). It couldn’t work out, and he shouldn’t try. But after tonight…Jacobi may not have had a lot of relationship success in the past, but there was no way he was mistaking the way Kepler looked at him.

They had watched the fireworks on the hood of Kepler’s car, the weather just cold enough so that Jacobi could exaggerate a shiver and huddle up next to him. And Kepler had said 'rule number eight' for what must’ve been the tenth time that night, but he wrapped a warm arm around Jacobi all the same.

AKA Kepler takes Jacobi home after their fireworks anniversary.

Jacobi in Kepler’s apartment, about to take a leap.

He shouldn’t waste Kepler’s generosity, but the glass in his hand was the last thing on his mind. The perfectly shaped cupid’s bow of Kepler’s upper lip, interrupted by a scar, was on his mind instead. Warren Kepler had no right being that fucking beautiful while also being that fucking annoying all the time. 

“I’m so glad you appreciate how I’ve changed your life for the better.” Kepler was gassing up his own ego. “Really, you should be getting me a gift, and yet here I am.”

Jacobi wanted to shut him up more than anything and could think of about a thousand different ways to do it. 

And really, what was he supposed to think? Looking at him like that, sitting next to him on his car with their bodies pressed together from shoulder to thigh. And then Kepler had invited him back to his place for a drink. 

Kepler tilted his head when he laughed, bringing him even more into Jacobi’s space.

Those damn lips, and that damn wonky tooth that gives him a lisp that gets worse when he’s mad. It shouldn’t be cute, should it?

This is all headcanon but I just think he was recruited very young and the time in his early twenties when he could have been doing some identity exploration was instead spent becoming the most perfect corporate boy he could. And people respect you more, listen to you more if you present a certain way, right? He should leave childish things behind him.

And in a world where he lives post canon, maybe just maybe he can explore that all a little more.
