hi! Indonesian (but not of Chinese descent) here. found your blog while looking for tags for current events, and your posts gave me new insight. genuine, GENUINE question. what can non-Chindos do to be better allies and take better account of your experiences while taking action and spreading the word in this climate? I imagine those "hati2 psyop" posts were not exactly made with sensitivity readers in mind.
hi! i appreciate you taking the time to send this ask. knowing that people outside of my community care about this gives me hope that we aren't being left behind. in regards to "psy op" warnings specifically...
Being told, "You should be skeptical if you see reports about anti-Chindo violence, that could be fake news!" comes across as.... "Racism against people in your community is old news, nobody does that anymore- so any news you hear of someone in your community being harmed is probably just a hoax!" If this were a psy-op, one goal would be to make the Chinese-Indonesian community fearful or even resentful of those demonstrating. But... honestly? Many of us already are. Racism against Chindos is real. Racially motivated violence / harm towards Chindo is real. Even in progressive spaces, racism exists, many times unchallenged. We are plenty scared even without any buzzer intervention- and as I had mentioned in my original post... our fears are grounded in reality.
And yknow what? Spreading disinformation with the intention of encouraging people to enact harm in real life.. is still hate speech. It's still racism. It could very well likely lead to actual hate crimes happening. The fact that our government thought to use this tactic at all means that the government doesn't give a fuck about us and our safety. The fact that some people are being convinced by the buzzers tells me that for a lot of people, there is still racism hidden under the surface, just waiting for any excuse to come out. Thankfully, I've noticed some people outside of the Chindo community posting stuff like this:

This is definitely a start! seeing (non-Chinese) people affirm that no, racism is not allowed in the movement and they will stop anybody they see committing acts of racially motivated violence is.. well let's be honest, it's actually the bare minimum but seeing how it's so rare, I do appreciate it. immensely. Better yet, I'd feel supported if I saw someone directing their message directly at the buzzers themselves- something along the lines "hey, your attempts at trying to get us to turning against our fellow citizens will not work. you are not welcome here." I have seen some people doing that today- which was awesome. Overall, I think it is important to think about your minority friends- Chinese-Indonesians, yes, and LGBT+ / queer people, disabled people, people in religious minorities.... please check in on them. Let them know you're thinking of them. One of my friends told me, "Hey, if the violence gets bad, you can shelter at my house." That meant a lot. This is a terrifying time for our country, and for those in minority groups it is an added level of terrifying because not only do we know our government hates us, we also know that across the board, most of our countrymen hate us too.

WASHING RICE. the thing we are talking about is WASHING RICE. PASSING WATER OVER RICE. an action that takes anywhere from 30-120 seconds. you 'DON'T KNOW HOW' to WASH RICE. you 'DON'T CARE ENOUGH TO LEARN' how to WASH RICE. the concept of IMMERSING RICE IN WATER has passed you by because you were not TAUGHT AS A CHILD.
