One weird experience of transitioning is failing at ur assigned gender role the whole time and everyone constantly deriding you for it but then u come out and it's like we lost a beautiful gender conforming warrior today. This book should be required reading for the primary caregivers of people with developmental disabilities. They give her the space to make as many choices as they can, but are very clear when she can’t. They let her do things independently first, even if they know they might have to help later, or fix the mess. They don’t let her play helpless, and keep empowering her to direct her own life in the ways she can reasonably handle. They don’t censor themselves when talking about adult topics, because she IS an adult regardless of her mental status. They explain things in ways she can understand, without talking down to her. This is special, and all too rare.
