Just saw some concept art for this game and it's looks really interesting! Is it still in development? The last post on this blog was Nov '17 and it's now Aug '18.
Hey there! Sorry for the radio silence this last little while. I’ve gotten a few asks like this and I’m really happy that people are interested in the game enough to still be following it.
Long story short this last year had been tough (lost the cousin I was closest to, lost my childhood pet, father was in the hospital and it was a close call, work let go of some people and has not replaced them so we’ve been understaffed for a year now). And in better news I have my own place now but moving was also something that took up a lot of my time. Unfortunately all that left very little time for dev stuff.
In hindsight I should have waited until I had more work done on the game itself to start showing concept art, because this lull in content makes me look pretty flaky! So I’m refraining from posting until I have a lot to show and a good start. After the big lull in progress that this year was I’m really pushing myself and my goal is to hit 20 hours per week on it. Thanks so much for the continued interest!

Is the game still in development? I noticed that the Facebook and Twitter pages haven’t updated in over a year, but of course it’s impossible to tell on Tumblr :\
Hey! I’ve been keeping quiet until I have more actual content to show - I made these pages as part of a final project for school when it was still in the very conceptual stages and life’s been busy since then.
It is absolutely still happening and I am very excited by the recent attention it’s gotten here on Tumblr!

When the game releases where will it be available on? Steam or GameJolt or somewhere else?
I’m definitely hoping for Steam. However I am looking into DRM-free platforms as well because I know a lot of people prefer that, so there will be a DRM-free option as well either way.

Why computer viruses?
This is one of my favorite little stories from my past so I’ll let you in on it.
I used to be so terrified of computer viruses. I got my first computer in 1998 (I was 8 years old) and was pretty much unsupervised. One day my dad was watching the news and there was a report on the ILOVEYOU/LoveLetter virus. It featured a man clutching his head and screaming in (what I assumed was) pain.
I now now that he was likely upset that he lost important files.
Child me, however, thought the computer virus was electrocuting him.
Long story short I swiped my mom’s rubber dishwashing gloves and wore them when I went on the computer for a while. So the viruses couldn’t electrocute me.
I also thought getting a virus would make your computer bleed. I’m not sure where I got that one from.

hey quick question. will malwhere be free to play or will it cost something? i am 100% to spend money on this
It’ll likely be around $10 USD. I anticipate the final game being around 8-10 hours long. The demo (likely around 30 minutes-1 hour long) will be free of course.

And in other news, I’m also hopefully going to be in an article about disabled gamers soon (I’m an arm amputee).

Progress Report:
-Initial menus DONE -Dialogue system including flexible portraits and branching dialogue DONE -Smooth movement system DONE -Ranged + melee weapons DONE -Randomly-generated pop-ups DONE -Health system DONE -Battle system ABOUT HALF DONE -Inventory system UP NEXT -Super secret feature LAST
So, I’m still here. Sorry it’s been going slow, that old saying about how the last 10% will take 90% of your time is true and I’ve been working a lot at my IT job. The polish is the toughest part. And in my opinion, the most rewarding part too, thankfully.
If you have any game dev questions or questions about Malwhere, feel free to hit up my inbox!

Bugs love to make art, but they really only make art about bugs.

...And a monochrome scheme with a few more tones. (The whole game won’t be brownish if I go with this style; that’s just the color scheme of the bug hive.)
Trying out both color and monochrome color schemes…

I’m gonna do it, because in the shower I thought of many fascinating topics such as “The news report that made me think computer viruses could actually kill you”, “That weird period of the late 90s and early 2000s where a downloadable purple ape menaced the world” and “A brief dissection of the first website I made in 1998″.
All three of these topics relate to the game on some level.
It’ll likely be a wordpress because I pay for my website and need to use it for something.
Might start rambling about the more technical aspects of game dev (and also about writing).
Not sure if I’ll do it here or put a WordPress blog onto my website…

Man I don't remember HOW I stumbled on Malwhere but it was awhile ago and I'm still like hype as fuck for this game. Its in my followed tags and every time I see it I get excited again. Great concept and art, you're seriously talented.
Thank you so much!

Ah man, I'm way to excited for this. Is there anything you might need help w/ from supporters right now? I mean, it doesn't have to be money, maybe you could request help for character sprites or somethin'? (No offense, but your sprites look a little...flat.) Anyways, this looks awesome and I hope it turns out well!
Thanks for your support, first off!
I may be getting someone else to do the sprites. I wanted to polish the ones I’d already made but I’m not very experienced with spriting/animating so it’s very time consuming, and I don’t want it to take so long that people lose interest.

Hey, are you familiar with danooct1 on YouTube? His channel is entirely just videos of various viruses and malware and I think you could find some nice inspiration there.
Yes, I follow him! One of my favorite YouTube channels.
