A Ópera do malandro (The Scoundrel's Opera) is a 1978 musical play by Chico Buarque (considered to be one of the greatest artists in modern Brazilian history).

It features a trans sex worker (Geni) despite being written during a brutal right-wing military dictatorship* with a censorship board so strict that my mom remembers having to perform her school plays to them as a child.

How did Geni being trans get past the censorship board?

Chico Buarque, who had made getting protest material past censorship into a veritable art form, left that teeny tiny detail out of the script.

There's nothing in the script that suggests Geni is trans, you only find out she's transgender if you watch the play.
