marlene loves being up in the sky. she loves being on her broom, wind in her face, hair whipping around. she loves the feeling it gives her in her stomach and the giddiness she feels every time she’s up there. to her, it feels like home. and she knows someone who feels the same way; alice fortescue. it’s the first week of school and marlene can feel the need to be up in the air filling her body and she figures she might as well have a partner to be in the air with. after classes, she heads out to find alice, one goal in mind. and when she spotted alice, she had to stop herself from just asking ‘fly?’. she actually makes a sentence though, rather than just the one word on her brain. “hey, do you wanna come flying with me?” she raises an eyebrow as she looks at alice. “i’m going a little stir crazy and i figured you might be too,” she says with a small giggle.
-
alice sits cross-legged in the courtyard. the sun falling directly onto her face as she keeps her eyes closed, enjoying the warmth of the day. it’s been yet another day of classes for her and everything feels more or less like a blur. she knows she’s supposed to pay more attention in class. it’s her seventh year after all. but alice fortescue has always had chronic academic disinterest. so when marlene saunters over and asks her to fly, she quickly opens her eyes. grateful for the distraction from thinking about her grades. “sure,” she replies, “accio broom?” in seconds, her broom flies past the horde of students playing gobstones and into her hands. “i’m more than stir crazy. i was thinking about my grades and how to turn them to o’s. almost made my mother proud because i thought about grades.”
she shakes her head and stands up. “race you to the pitch?” she challenges, grinning. marlene’s a good friend. though they play opposite each other in quidditch, flying with marlene is always fun.

tildenotoots:
“or at the very least it’s a last resort,” he amends, knowing that he can always patch up the damage of an accio gone wrong. his brain wracks through a list of spells, coming up as empty. “yes, well, it’s something of a pet project. and well you know, three green thumbs and all. has to pay off by being good with plants if nothing else,” he rambles, used to the curiosity at his, admittedly intense, interest in herbology. “plus bartholomew, uh that’s the plant’s name, he’s something of a pet project. grew him from a seed and a few clippings and since his genus doesn’t normally grow here, everything has to be just right for this to succeed.” and for the interested client to pay out, though that goes unsaid.
he stops in his tracks as he considers that — how was he to know where the plant would go? there had to be a spell for this — a tracking spell, of course. but the only one he knew needed some element of the plants and all his clippings were in his notebook in the dorms. “accio,” he cast with a whip of his wand, letting out a relieved sigh when the notebook came racing his way. “i know a tracking spell but it might take two of us to follow it, it tends to be a little chaotic in nature,” he explains flipping through the pages before reach a page with flowers and twigs.
plucking up a twig with a leaf hanging off of it, he tucked the book into his bag and cast the spell. gold light surrounded them for a brief second before the twig started twitching with a life of its own and escaped their grasp. “alright, and now we play: follow that twig!” he yelled, taking off after the twig again even as it hesitated as if waiting for him to catch up.
alice nods along. she’s seen tilden toots in herbology classes before. while she’s struggling with fertilizer doses (as she always does), he’s off making plants grow taller. his plants also always look much happier than everyone else’s. “right. three green thumbs. your plants always do look much better than everyone else’s in class.” she smiles, “makes sense why you can grow a walking plant--bartholomew--in a climate it doesn’t usually grow in.” alice has zero interest in herbology but hearing people talk about things they are passionate in always makes her heart swell. it’s nice to know that people have things they are passionate about. and if listening to them talk about these passions makes their day better, she can lend her ears anytime.
“a tracking spell’s fine by me,” alice watches as he calls for his notebook and casts a tracking spell with what she can only assume is a twig from the walking plant, bartholomew. she readies herself to run after it.
when he skids past her after the flying twig, she follows. “okay. let’s hope the twig’s going to take us to the right place,” the twig starts to fly by a faster pace. it weaves its way through the hallways and seems to be heading outdoors. “i think you’re right that the plant is at the lake!” she shouts to tilden, “twig’s heading that way! you go to one end of the lake, i go to the other?”

tildenotoots:
tilden thinks about the summoning spell, wonders if the spell would work on this plant and comes to the conclusion that he doesn’t want to risk it. “that could be an idea to test, but i’m not entirely sure that wouldn’t end badly,” he replies, humming as he considers what testing for that would look like. he makes a mental note to research the spell later before perking up at the response, “great!”
“it’s pretty fast for a plant, it can move about 5 meters in 30 seconds. i don’t know if it knows how to get to the greenhouse. we’ve been growing it hydroponically — in nutrient dense water — so it was leaving little wet footprints in a slight v shape but i think their roots must be dry because i haven’t seen any,” as he answers the questions, he ticks a finger off for each one. “it might seek out water, if that’s the case,” he realizes out loud, glancing around for any puddles. “oh shit, the lake!” he takes off running.
“so accio is off the list,” alice nods solemnly. her brain already rattling off any other ideas or spells that might work on a walking plant. if the summoning spell can do damage, is there any other minimal damage spell they can use to capture it? “i’ll think of something else!”
she listens to tilden’s description. her lips puckered as she tries to compile a profile of the walking plant inside her head. a fast, moving plant that grows in water. how very odd. “you sure do know a lot about this plant,” alice comments, “me, i go to herbology class and then leave with an empty head and a withering plant.”
when tilden suddenly takes off, alice startles, not expecting his speed. she immediately runs after him. “are you sure it’ll go to the lake?” she asks him, keeping up with his pace, “it could go to the great hall. there’s plenty water there. closer too.”

tildenotoots:
“oh no, oh no, oh no.” they muttered to themselves, scurrying through the castle desperately looking around the hallways as they searched for a missing potted plant. “this is the problem with plants that can walk,” he grumbled, ducking down to the ground and checking under a bench. sighing, he accepted that he would need help to find the darned thing. sliding up to the first person he recognized, he started off with an offer, “ i will give you ten galleons. ”
they paused, as if giving the other time to process that. “to find a plant, or to help me look for a plant actually, see i was helping professor sprout by taking the socratea exorrhiza for a walk but it started running and i lost it. it’s only a seedling, you see, so it’s about two feet talk, a dark red colour and it walks using its roots.” he had not actually been helping professor sprout, given that it was his plant that he had snuck into the school but that was a story for another day.
“would an accio work on that plant? whenever i lose my things, i just use accio. ” alice asks, tilting her head slightly and glancing around the hallway. she’s never paid much attention in herbology (or any of her classes really) so walking plants and their magical rules elude her. she’s not even sure what this plant looks like other than the fact that, according to tilden, it walks apparently. “but i love galleons so i’ll help!”
“is the plant fast? or is it slow? does it know how to get back to the greenhouse?” alice starts asking questions, getting into detective mode. she’s read one too many crime novels and things or people that disappear into thin air are always trickiest to find. “is it grown in pots? do the roots have dirt or mud on them that can leave tracks?”

—— ♡ * EMMELINE WAS LOOKING forward to the start of the school year , mood on the first day of classes very yellow - green , for mixed emotions . but if anyone asked , she would say purple. for excited, obviously. she sauntered through the hallways , a heart shaped bag she’d charmed for more room slung over her right shoulder , only one textbook cradled in her left arm and head - girl badge worn proudly on her left . the bag’s contents were only the essentials – lipgloss , wand , pink and black glitter gel pens , pink bubblegum , loose crystals and water . the textbook? divination .
the crowded hallways were no help to her mood , only causing her to stress , which was something she tried to avoid. ❛ EXCUSE ME ! ❜ a sing - song voice tries to pierce through the noise of the crowd to no avail . “excuse me!” more harsh . a second failed attempt. she fully stops walking through the crowd, hands now out in front of her , exasperated. “ MOVE ! ” a few now scatter. “i’m, like, literally head girl .”
“hello, like, literally head girl. i’m alice.” alice stifles her laugh, waving at emmeline and walking over to her. happy to not have missed her chance at a good dad joke. and also, happy to see that hogwarts is still as interesting as it was last school year. “i think flying through the hallway would work better than yelling that, like literally head girl.”
“i’d offer you my broom but my team captain told me not to lose my broom again so close to try outs.” alice tries for a smile this time before glancing at the book emmeline is holding. divination. is it bad that alice isn’t even sure whether she’s signed up for divination or not? she glances up at emmeline. “divination? you should be able to use the secret corridor to get there. much faster.”

lookingback:
“it’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life for me, ‘n i’m feeling … like this energy is not being reciprocated.” she pouts, lips pushing out dramatically to seal the ‘puss in boots’ act. “should i go from the top or am i just wasting my voice and my time?” she pauses, waits a second, then fingers, of their own accord, go to knock against their skull, gently. “hellooooo, anyone home?” she smiles, like you would at a growling bear, with a hint of concern and caution.
“did professor binns suck your life force already?” that’s how you know she’s trying to throw them a bone ⏤ if anyone has a kind word to say about the worst teacher in hogwarts history, its lily, even if it’s out of her ass most times.
“lily, it’s nine in the morning,” alice rubs her eyes, still half awake as she shovels more eggs onto her plate and refills her mug with her second fill of coffee. merlin knows she’s going to need it if lily intends to sing the whole morning. don’t get alice wrong, she loves lily but loud singing at nine when she’s barely alive? hell no. “i am about as alive as professor binns.” she answers, not comprehending lily’s question in her sleepy haze. she blinks her eyes a few times, trying to drive the sleep away.
“are you still taking binns’s class?” she asks, taking a sip from her mug, “everyone says he’s more like a vampire than a ghost. he sucks the life force out of everyone.” alice yawns and blinks her eyes again. “wait, didn’t you just say that? that he sucks life forces? sorry, i’m just... too sleepy.”

place of residence: diagon alley, london (more specifically on the third floor of her parents’ popular ice cream shop)
family: florean fortescue (father) & kim chae-young (mother)

aesthetics: a thermos of unsweetened tea, fog in the morning air, the rustle of coats inside an old closet, the smell of toothpaste, braided black hair, rough hands, the swish of a broom shooting up into the air
personality: daring (alice is always up for a challenge, there seems to be little she is scared of. as a child, she barely ever cries). capricious (hardheaded, her way or no way). swift (exacting, someone who believes in justice and its sharp sword).
house: gryffindor
wand: 12 1/2 inch with unicorn hair core, made out of oak wood, unyielding

character inspo: gamora from guardians of the galaxy & jessie from toy story
headcanons
- as a little girl, alice barely ever cried. she was the quietest baby, calm and brave. when storms would strike, she would listen to the heavy rain with curiosity instead of fear. her mother would tell her that she was the best baby. everyone was jealous of alice’s quietness.
- she is close to her maternal grandmother who lived with the fortescue family. she writes to her every week. her grandmother is the only one who calls her ji-yoon and the only one she lets call her that. her korean name is a name of sentimental values, of intimacy. only those very very close to her and very very dear to her are allowed to call her ji-yoon.
- truthfully, alice has no interest in school. her only interest is in being up in the sky, flying and catching quaffles.
- she has a scar over her eyebrow from a bludger. it’s been years and the scar is still pronounced. she likes to hide it with makeup.
wanted connections
- the secret crush. the one she’s secretly been in love with since first year. preferably someone who is also on the gryffindor quidditch team. this person has never looked her way though. and they’ve shared locker rooms all these years.
- the best friend. her shoulder to cry on.
- the beater. the one who sent the bludger flying her way, the one that left her her scar.
- the fellow fanatic. her fellow quidditch fanatic.
