Many people picture the Scandinavian countries (Norway, Sweden & Denmark) as still cold this time of the year; in early Spring.
But in southern Norway, where the Capitol Oslo is located it starts to see warmer temperatures as early as April and daylight also starts to increase from their long winter’s darkness.
So who is Ostara, the “Lady of the East”?
Ostara is the name that the Vikings used for the Norse Goddess of Dawn & Spring. She is also known a Eostre which is the Northumbrian Old English version of the name Ostara. Eostre comes from Germanic mythology.
The poem asks Ostara to “grant us a springing step to hop after the opportunities”. So this is similar to the sentiment of the Romans, Carpe Diem, “seize the day”. The Vikings believed in taking the opportunities you are given and you will grow in joy, health & prosperity.
So get hopping out of bed & get hopping to the tasks to better yourselves, modern Vikings, for your actions promise better days!
