I hate the cult of personality. It's the reason that Justin Vernon has so much appeal to me. Anyone that can create such sincere beauty in everything he touches deserves respect; it's not just gifted to him through buzz.
And that brings us to "Comrade" by Volcano Choir. Docile tones and a golden background break down to triplet arpeggios and ardent pleas in a song whose journey is as deep as Vernon's body of work.
Enjoy and happy Wednesday. Via Pitchfork

J Dilla x Com Truise: knx.'s "Anthology"
Tumblr media
You loved "Donuts". Don't pretend you didn't. But even more importantly, you love self-contained microcosms of expertly produced work so encompassing that you forget yourself for 20 or so tracks. You're going to listen to one of the most overlooked records of 2013, knx.'s "Anthology"
Now get started champ.

You wanted to spend your day scratching your head at what is at once EDM, abstract ambient, and glitch electronica right? Yeah, I thought so. This here mixtape from Arca entitled "&&&&&" is gonna blow your fucking mind, and it's not even Wednesday yet.

I'm not gonna lie to you (I mean, I could, but I won't), after listening to so much music in my life, I'm pretty quick to make snap judgements about albums. Russian Tsarlag's "Gagged in Boonesville" was an exception. It got its hooks in me and now I'm on listen three of this album in the past 24 hours. Strangely hypnotic, grotesque cover art, and tagged as "Swamp Surf", what the hell are you waiting for?

At the risk of looking like an overly obsessed electronica fan, this rework of "More Than a Woman" is an example of the dynamic nature of the genre. I hate the Beegees. That's important to know, because what they've accomplished here is much more than a Glee-esque revamp with better production and performers, it's a transformation holding little resemblance to the original while finding it's own legs in the process. No pun intended.
Here's "Much More Than a Woman" by Dynamicron.

The arpeggiated melodies of "My Girls", the patience of Todd Terje, and the kind of powerful subtlety of modern electronica, this piece by Henrik José is transcendent. Lay back and sail away. Here's "Photo Album" by Henrik José.

You've heard Random Access Memories. Don't pretend you haven't. Yet, to be quite frank, some of the best work of the album has come out of some very interesting interpretations of the Noah Lennox complimented "Doin' It Right". Between The Golden Pony's Remix and this rework by Daedelus, it's plain to see that Daft Punk's contributions to music outreach even their own imaginations.

Disclosure is taking the Internet music scene by storm lately, and it's not without reason. The beautiful feminine vocal guests they employ, coupled with soulful, well-produced electronic backdrops makes you float, willingly, into a dreamy abyss. I just wish we didn't have to wake up.

I'm not a huge fan of world music. I'm not cultured enough to get it. (that's not self-deprecation, I just don't have the musical background in international music to contribute any informed opinions on it) Furthermore, I do not know who Cesaria Evora is. But what I do know is that this track is as seductive and longing as anything I've ever heard. Enjoy ladies and gents.

Let me make one thing perfectly clear: you and I are lazy people. We are, it's okay to admit. With that in mind, Noon Pacific is your best friend. The guy curates a weekly playlist released every Monday at (you guessed it) 12 PM Pacific time and it has consistently rocked my world. One-offs, remixes, and up-and-comers for those of us too human to dig past Pitchfork's homepage.

Yeah it's a mash-up, sue me. OR, and bear with me here, sit back and enjoy "There's Something About Us Between the Sheets" by The Knocks, a gorgeous marriage of Daft Punk and Ellie Goulding. You're welcome.

You've heard this already, I know, and if you haven't, then shame on you. "Reach for the Dead" by Boards of Canada is much more than just an awesome song: it's a fucking awesome song. Enjoy a brief, taut diversion from a truly influential outfit.
Edit: So the widget appears to be messed up... thanks Obama.

Look, if you don't already understand how incredible contemporary electronica is, then get out. On this track, "Sleep on the Floor, Dream About Me" by Ruddyp, just lay back and let the staccato dreaminess of hard percussion and washy vocal samples take you away from work for 3 minutes and 38 seconds.

It's Me Bitches

That's a cat right as it's about to sneeze, which can only mean one thing: Ian's back.
That's right folks, after an extended hiatus, I've returned with Jake and Tom's blessing to cover things on a more day-to-day, track-to-track basis. That means more singles, more limited releases, and more gems for your daily pleasure. The content will be more irregular (not going to promise daily posts or anything like that) but this is in an attempt to ensure that the content you get is organic and enjoyable.
Over the next few days I'll be throwing out some one-off and underground releases I've unearthed over the past couple months. Some of them you may already be familiar with, but I hope you find something refreshing in the process.
Stay thirsty my friends.
