major sotr spoilers but. i can't stop thinking about this

we saw how peeta and katniss both have their worst fears come true by the end of the trilogy (prim dying, peeta hijacked). and perhaps this is reading too far into it, but i found it interesting that haymitch's fears that he mentions near the beginning actually don't come true. the gruesome death by mutts that he feared gets given to ampert instead. haymitch gets given the arguably worse punishment of having to watch this innocent child get devoured to the bone. and similarly, his family and girlfriend never have to watch him die because they die instead, and he has to live alone with the fear of the same fate meeting anyone he is close to. truly sick and twisted work by suzanne collins

it sheds such light on his character too, how he doesn't think he can save anyone, and how he doesn't want them to come to him, but he can't help still having this compassion for them. but in katniss and peeta perhaps he finally saw someone who could be saved
