✨Hello, I’m Viola✨ #MarchMeetTheMaker ⁠ ⁠ Here is me and here are my two author-illustrated picture books, Rabbit Bright (my first) and Hello (just published!) I thought it was about time I said hello to my old friends and welcomed new ones, so here goes. ⁠ ✨⁠ 你好! My name is Viola Wang. I'm a printmaker and an illustrator, based in the UK. As you may have already guessed, I was born and raised in China. Growing up in a family of printers profoundly influenced my interests and practice. My early training in fine art has given me a foundation and focus in observation and figurative drawing, and colour has always been at the heart of what I do. ⁠ ✨⁠ Since graduating from Cambridge School of Art's MA in Children's Book Illustration, I have been working with my publisher Hodder on my author-illustrated books and have enjoyed teaching illustration at universities. Creating my own picture books opened up opportunities for me to work with clients like CBeebies, Kookie magazine, the South Bank Centre, and literary festivals. It's really fantastic to be able to see my work on tv, published in a magazine, or to go on stage to entertain children with my creations.⁠ ✨⁠ There is something new I have been working on – myself. Last year, I took a year off to join the Drawing Year programme at the Royal Drawing School. It was a great opportunity to go back to study the fundamentals of drawing, and further develop my own voice (or voices!) as a visual artist. I am hoping to create a bridge between the visual arts and illustration. Very exciting things are happening. I will report back very soon! 🤩Imagine CHILDREN’S festival 🤩 I had such a great time at the Imagine @SouthbankCentre yesterday, the grand finale of the Imagine Children’s festival. Reading my new book Hello to over a hundred children and parents. The most thrilling part was competing with the amazing artist and illustrator Aaron Blecha on Top Draw – a live drawing competition on the big stage! ✨ The response was overwhelming. What I enjoyed most were the moments where we were collaborating with children in the audience, creating fantastic characters within a 30-second time-frame.The entire ground floor of the Royal Festival Hall was filled with laughter and cheers! It was powered by the creative energy of everyone! Even when the event had ended, many children came up to the stage to draw with me. So wonderful to see the happy faces and the extraordinary creativity. I love my career as a Children’s book author and illustrator! It is my true calling. ✨ Thanks to everyone who came to talk to me after the show and came to the book signing organised by @FoylesForBooks. It was a fantastic opportunity to talk to my readers. It is a great encouragement for me to make more books. Thanks for your support. All the books at the event were SOLD OUT! ✨ I would like use this opportunity to thank the organisers from @SouthBankCentre Deborah Bankole and Alexander Solo and @thesarahblanc the amazing host for the amazing opportunity and support. My 2022 #the100dayproject  is…#drawMyCityLondon a daily drawing diary around my favourite city London ✨ As many of you already know, I have been taking a year off and studying at the Royal Drawing School full-time during the Drawing Year. It has been a transformative year, and is now coming towards its end. I will do a full report on it and invite you all to our graduation show in another post. To see my drawings from the Drawing Year, please follow @drawerviola ✨ What I have enjoyed most in the past year is drawing outdoors and rediscovering my city London. I love meeting people, and @RoyalDrawingSchool public course I met local artists and art students from all around. We observe d London on foot.  Whether sun or rain, we captured the moments in our sketchbooks. So I have acquired an appetite for on-location drawing and would like to continue my exploration of London. ✨ My tools (some of them): - my handmade sketchbooks! - watercolour s - colour pencils and pastels - my trusty drawing stool/backpack ✨ I have heard the best way to start a new challenge is to make an announcement, then you c an't easily give up. I am asking you my dear friends, to cheer me along and help me to complete the project.  ✨ I would also like to use The 100 Day Project to keep up a daily draw ing routine and to be bolder, experimenting more with different media.  ✨ I would love to try new materials and approaches. 🦉🐈🛶 Why not gift a limited edition print instead of a Christmas card? For a few years now, I have been trying to cut out unnecessary paper consumption. Instead of sending out factory-produced Christmas cards, I have created a special edition hand-pulled mini-print to send to friends and family. They are designed and hand-printed by me, and all editions are signed and numbered. So they are extra special. 🦉🐈🛶 My wish is that the limited-edition handmade prints could be also passed on for the following year and bring more love and joy to other people.
