last week i was late to host our first creative writing club meeting because i had to run to the office after school to turn in the loose knife a kid found on my floor

a bunch of the classmate questions were clearly kids making fun of their friends’ crushes. entertaining for me to flip through and not read aloud

had the kids ask each other anonymous get-to-know-you questions. favorites so far include “what is your least favorite animal?” and “what is your favorite color and why?”

i had them write a question to a classmate on the lined side of an index card & a question to me on the blank side. at least 4 kids independently chose to draw caricatures of me next to their questions

i’m already wary of men who randomly approach and compliment me in public, but now i’m starting to feel the same way about women bc of multiple conversations that began with “i like your sweater” and devolved into pyramid scheme recruitment attempts

but recently a girl said “love your shirt, it’s perfect for the upcoming fall season!” and i said “thanks!” and then we both continued shopping at target. perhaps i was a cynic. perhaps love and light are still possible
