i wanted to make an oc ask game 😋 things i like to ask people abt their characters:
are they associated with a certain color? what color do they wear the most?
what sort of music would they like? have you thought about what genres or bands do they lean towards? do they have a favorite song?
weapon of choice? any particular reason they chose their weapon?
how crafty/resourceful are they?
how do they typically dress? does their wardrobe lean more towards practicality or aesthetics?
how do they wear their hair? do they care a lot how their hair looks?
favorite animal? why?
do they have a nickname? who gave it to them? if it's not derived from their real name, what's the story behind it?
favorite food? least favorite? are they a picky eater? do they have any dietary restrictions?
if they wear jewelry, what kind? do they prefer silver or gold? do they have a favorite gem?
what do they have in common with you? how are they different? would you get along with them?
how long have they been around? do you know their birthday? is their birthday the day you made them or another day? what do they think of celebrating birthdays?
what languages do they speak? how fluently?
are they any good with numbers?
how big or small is their family? who did they live with growing up? do they live with anyone now?
do they have any pets? what do they call their pets?
how did they spend their summers/free time as a child?
their opinion on lying, stealing, and killing?
are they quick to anger? what sets them off?
if applicable, can they drive? if they have their own, what color is their vehicle? is the inside neat and tidy, or a mess?
their favorite place to be?
do they sleep well at night?
how would you describe their voice? can they sing?
do they have any creative hobbies? (art, writing, music, etc)
how good/bad is their hearing? what about their eyesight?
how do they move? are they clumsy? light on their feet? do they use mobility aids?
if applicable, do they have a favorite sport? do they play any sports or prefer to watch?
how do they show that they care about someone? how do they express that they don't like someone?
are they associated with any particular element (air, earth, fire, water)?
do they smell like anything notable?
do they like receiving gifts? giving gifts? what is their ideal gift?
do they have any habits that aren't particularly self-destructive, just maybe odd?
if applicable, how would your other characters describe them? i mean specifically the people around them.
how would your character describe themselves? it doesn't have to line up with how they really are.
do they ever return home?

#book project 4#marietta#still working on her character concept but yeah she's a mermaid.#current idea floating around in my head is:#starts out very tiny. grows into a massive and terrifying creature. salmon are incorporated into both her design and lifecycle as well.#she's the baby of her adopted family of adventurers. most of them just consider her family without any specific title. however!#mateo is an exception. he will proudly tell every single terrified sailor that that's his baby sister and he's taking her on a journey :)#they go and visit the place she was born every year. kinda like salmon but not really. still working on the mermaid worldbuilding.#but yeah those two have a very fun dynamic. he desperately wanted a little sibling as a kid and jumped on the first opportunity to get one.

#book project 2#gideon#he absolutely would have immediately after losing most of his friends and becoming technically immortal.#the only thing stopping him was that he was like fourteen with no money at the time.#fun fact: in my younger self's plot idea he was actually supposed to leave the united states and go somewhere in europe at that point.#then i realized that made absolutely zero sense whatsoever <3 so now he just. mournfully thinks about it a lot for a little bit.

is it easy for your oc to admit they were wrong?
#book project 1#lena#no it's like. her primary character flaw actually.#at one point she logically knows her plan won't work anymore and retreat is her team's best option. but. she can't handle that idea.#so she orders a teammate (who has an issue with never questioning anything she says. and she's aware of this.) to recklessly push forward#in a pointlessly risky attempt at gaining the upper hand. and it ends with him getting captured and severely injured.#and other members of her team are rightfully very upset. and for a while she just. cannot admit that she was in the wrong for doing that.#she knows she was. but she can't admit it to her team. and then they get their teammate back and. he doesn't really hold it against her.#but that's kind of the tipping point of her character growth around how she interacts with the other characters.#she does end up verbally apologizing for the whole thing to a different teammate who was the most angry about the whole thing#(she was very close to the captured teammate and also was on rough terms with lena to start with due to bad experiences with authority)#and she kind of gradually resolves things with the others over time. it's a lot of complex dynamics but they do all care about each other.#but yeah it is absolutely not easy for her. extremely difficult.

who makes your oc feel seen?
#book project 2#malia#malia & gideon#a huge part of malia's characterization revolves around the idea that she desperately desperately wants to feel seen.#and gideon was really the first person she met that she felt understood that - understood her.#and that's one of the things at the center of their friendship. she wants to be seen and there is nothing he wants less than to be seen.#but there's this kind of understanding between them that they don't really know how to express.#they meet when they're silly goofy kids about to experience the Horrors.#and they latch onto each other because everyone else thinks they're annoying and they think they're both hilarious.#but like. as things go on. there's this trust that develops - that malia doesn't have to fight for gideon to see her. for that importance.#and that gideon doesn't have to worry about malia pushing too far. she knows when to look away from the unraveling defenses.#and they get this kind of security with each other that they don't really have with anyone else. and. agh. they make me ill. i love them.

📚Here is my list:
The "how to draw manga" series produced by Graphic-sha. These are for manga artist but they give great advice and information.
"Creating characters with personality" by Tom Bancroft. A great book that can help not just people who draw cartoons but also realistic ones. As it helps you with facial ques and how to make a character interesting.
"Albinus on anatomy" by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Great book to help someone learn basic anatomy.
"Artistic Anatomy" by Dr. Paul Richer and Robert Beverly Hale. A good book if you want to go further in-depth with anatomy.
"Directing the story" by Francis Glebas. A good book if you want to Story board or make comics.
"Animal Anatomy for Artists" by Eliot Goldfinger. A good book for if you want to draw animals or creatures.
"Constructive Anatomy: with almost 500 illustrations" by George B. Bridgman. A great book to help you block out shadows in your figures and see them in a more 3 diamantine way.
"Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and expand" by Burne Hogarth. A book that shows how to block out shapes and easily understand what you are looking out. When it comes to human subjects.
"An Atlas of animal anatomy for artist" by W. Ellenberger and H. Dittrich and H. Baum. This is another good one for people who want to draw animals or creatures.
Etherington Brothers, they make books and have a free blog with art tips.
As for Supplies, I recommend starting out cheap, buying Pencils and art paper at dollar tree or 5 below. For digital art, I recommend not starting with a screen art drawing tablet as they are more expensive.
For the Best art Tablet I recommend either Xp-pen, Bamboo or Huion. Some can range from about 40$ to the thousands.

Clip Studio paint ( you can choose to pay once or sub and get updates)
Procreate ( pay once for $9.99)
Blender (for 3D modules/sculpting, ect Free)
PaintTool SAI (pay but has a 31 day free trail)

Libresprite (free, for pixel art)
Those are the ones I can recall.
So do with this information as you will but as you can tell there are ways to learn how to become an artist, without breaking the bank. The only thing that might be stopping YOU from using any of these things, is YOU.
I have made time to learn to draw and many artist have too. Either in-between working two jobs or taking care of your family and a job or regular school and chores. YOU just have to take the time or use some time management, it really doesn't take long to practice for like an hour or less. YOU also don't have to do it every day, just once or three times a week is fine.

#book project 1#devon & arianna#these two literally talk like this about each other in the Gen Swap AU and it's fantastic.#(that's the AU where they're A. teenagers. B. childhood best friends and C. in a long-distance qpr.#so it's different than their canon dynamic where they're middle aged adults who met recently and are now platonically coparenting.#both versions of them are very fun though!)#anyways they're not great at face-to-face compliments but when they're not directly talking to each other in the AU-#they start all but spouting poetry full of metaphors#about how their best friend / kind of partner? / future fiancee for tax benefits / none of your business / is the most lovely person alive-#and is also totally real and exists and “no i don't need a photo to prove it to a bunch of literal children. leave me alone.”#also they like writing long sappy messages to each other in the AU. they're very dramatic over long distance and very chill in real life.#silly little oc duo. i like them a lot. <3

you see, the problem with writing my oc backstories while listening to epic the musical is that i start instinctively changing details to match the lyrics of the current song playing.
and then i have to examine whatever "brilliant new backstory detail" i just thought of, and go:
(in the voice of someone trying to see what's in their dog's mouth) is that your oc's backstory? is it? yeah, um- no. no, it's not. that's odysseus of ithaca. put him back. no, i don't care if "ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves", your oc is ten years old and she does not have the ability nor the time to somehow get a crew of soldiers killed. move her along to the assassin plotline and put the sad greek man back where he came from.
