Starting Off Strong

"Abbess, or Lady Abbess, a bawd, the mistress of a brothel."
In other words, the lady proprietor of a whorehouse. I'm not an etymologist so I don't know (etymology folks pipe in!) but I would imagine this is a cheeky inversion of an Abbess, who is the head of an Abbey or Cloister - in other words, the Nun in charge of running things.

Hello Friends
I am making this blog to do a regular posting of fun words I find in the second edition of Francis Grose's A Classical Dictionary Of The Vulgar Tongue.
These are all slang words recorded, initially around the 1780s, but up into the early 19th century as well. The majority of these words come from the London area.
There are, unfortunately but unsurprisingly, also quite a few racist and bigoted words in there that I am choosing to not post, strictly for the fact that I would like for this blog to be an antidepressant.
I understand that in doing so I am providing only the goodfeels half of the linguistic story, and not the bitter bullshit, but if you want to look at history with the full view, the text is available on Google books!
