Currently my state with the designs are:
Cthulhu: Iconic image, not much changes from the og concept but with an 8 ball theming with the eyes.
Shub- cloud with eyes and horns and tentacles and legs. The very first og concept (floating around on my earliest posts somewhere) is one I’m attached to but I want to make it more offputting
Yog - bubbles and metallic tendrils and tongues uh Yknow typical yog sothoth
Nug and Yeb- p much unchanged concept wise (once again old art) I like the idea of them appearing deceptively simple but I’ve began to draw them a lil less stylized to show they’re a Little Fucked Up Actually and they have a more imposing form for galaxy destroying
Tsathoggua - lots of false eyes. Or maybe they are real. One of the designs where I decided not to make anything scary and instead focus on the wacky critter design, for better or for worse
Yig - have only made a more serious design. I would like to figure out a way to stylize him but right now he’s basically a giant, quilled snake with arms and a skull for a head, rather than flesh and the like.
Dagon- need to come up with new concept. Went from the typical design to a spookier, deep sea snail fish inspired one, but it’s been forever since I’ve payed attention to him. Would like to fix up and make more cohesive
Nyarlathotep- one that I wanted to keep a sort of toy aesthetic to as well- in this case because in the end he’s an extension of azathoth’s fleeting whims and is kind of a puppet or toy, at least a little. That and showing people trinkets and doohickeys and dressing up are all hobbies of his, so I think a playful approach could fit that mix of deception, intricacy and flair. I do not know if I can integrate this right, so I’ll have to play around with his avatars…
And there’s a couple more but right now the focus is on these

For my own little mythos tomfoolery I’m having trouble with designs that have the vibe I want
I have a few that are set in stone or that I’m pretty good with but others are missing something
My main struggle is that this project is like. Half comedy-parody and one aesthetic gimmick I want it to have is that a lot of the GOOs kinda have that art toy-vinyl figure vibe, with most being cutesy but still holding some level of that og Eldritch-ness. But I’m not sure if I’ve emulated that with my concepts, and I’ve wanted to make the designs more scary, too.
And some of the designs I’ve made are also more on the typical mythos side, so now I’m worried about any clashing with styles.
I mean, for most I think I can just have a cute version and a more scary version that can be used for serious moments and the creepier side of the project. Hell I could use the designs for any mythos art in general that way.
If the clashing gets to be too much, I may just make it so the sillier aesthetic is only from the Shub-Yog Lineage onward to tsathoggua and Cthulhu’s spawn, with others encapsulating different aesthetics. And in the case of Shub and Yog their truest forms would end up being scary with the little cartoonish facade adding to the contrast
But art toys can be a very unique scene, though many may look similar at first glance. Certainly the GOOs and OGs can vary in aesthetic to an extent…

No drawing of Rhan-Tegoth has ever done them justice
Its bulk was Cyclopean, for even squatted it towered to almost twice the height of Orabona, who was shewn beside it. Looking sharply, one might trace its approximations toward the bodily features of the higher vertebrates. There was an almost globular torso, with six long, sinuous limbs terminating in crab-like claws. From the upper end a subsidiary globe bulged forward bubble-like; its triangle of three staring, fishy eyes, its foot-long and evidently flexible proboscis, and a distended lateral system analogous to gills, suggesting that it was a head. Most of the body was covered with what at first appeared to be fur, but which on closer examination proved to be a dense growth of dark, slender tentacles or sucking filaments, each tipped with a mouth suggesting the head of an asp. On the head and below the proboscis the tentacles tended to be longer and thicker, and marked with spiral stripessuggesting the traditional serpent-locks of Medusa. To say that such a thing could have an expression seems paradoxical; yet Jones felt that that triangle of bulging fish-eyes and that obliquely poised proboscis all bespoke a blend of hate, greed, and sheer cruelty incomprehensible to mankind because mixed with other emotions not of the world or this solar system.
a black paw ending in a crab-like claw…
First off: how could a single photo show off the entire bulk and a zoom-in of of the bodily coverings?
Second: I want to see a visual that actually has Rhan-Tegoth covered in tiny snakelike projections
Tumblr media
Also a combination of a paw and claw? What would that look like? But it sounds so fascinating.
It needs to be be able to sit in a chair, at least as much as a teddy-bear can, since whenever seen it is asleep on a throne.
The implications of how it feeds from the remains of victims… ugh
It hungers, but it is not a calm eater. Softening up with acid. Claws pulling and pushing limbs in every direction lik, blood drained probably from all its little snake hairs, and in some cases plunging its proboscis in as well.
Its feeding mechanism is terrifying.
Understandable, its pointed out whatever nourishment it gets from Earth lifeforms, it isn’t enough and not what its adapted to.

Gotta say I do like the idea of keeping hastur/kiy separated from the HPL-Cthulhu mythos
I mean it doesn’t bother me but I think a lot of the KIY stuff functions best on its own, or at least without the inclusion of other gods if it were still considered a part of the same mythos

Lovecraft on Yog-Sothoth
"...Has Yog-Sothoth a pedigree? No. He always existed. Since he has no parents, I've never met ‘em. He isn't housebroken, so I generally try to chain him outside. When he sends forth a pseudopodic tentacle (which can pass through the most solid walls) and begins to grope around inside the house, I usually call his attention to something going on in another galaxy— just to get his mind off local things. Yog doesn't always have long, ropy arms, since he assumes a variety of shapes solid, liquid, and gaseous— at will. Possibly, though, he's fondest of the form which does have ‘em. I've never encouraged him to scratch my back, since those whom Yog-Sothoth touches are never seen again... at least, in any recognizable shape. It is not even safe to speak the name aloud. If we seem to have done so, and yet remain alive, it is merely because our merciful ignorance has caused us to mispronounce it. Yog-Sothoth's wife is the hellish cloud-like entity Shub-Niggurath, in whose honour nameless cults hold the rite of the Goat with a Thousand Young. By her he has two monstrous offspring—the evil twins Nug and Yeb. He has also begotten hellish hybrids upon the females of various organic species throughout the universes of space-time (cf. The Dunwich Horror)... As for little Nug and Yeb (only ten feet in diameter when in their average form), they are a bit destructive sometimes, though it's only a playfully, good-natured roughness. I like to have the little fellows about (even though they sometimes do dissolve visitors and passersby, and cause occasional troublesome enquiries), for they are somewhat basically very friendly and companionable."
From the letter to Willis Connover, September 1, 1936.

what if you went into a bar and the bartender was a fungus-girl and when she gave you your drink she said “you seem like a really fungi!” only some of her spores broke off in the drink and when they reached your stomach they started growing and spreading and entering your bloodstream and at last one reached your brain stem where it planted itself firmly and then your own body started acting against your will and you hiked and you climbed to a very tall place, far above all the foliage, and at last the fungi burst out of your eyes, sprouting into a thousand different intricate colors, and before long a bird girl showed up and started poking at your flesh and you realize in your last moments that this is what it’s all about, you were always meant to join the chain of life only as a single link in some monstrous fungi’s reproductive cycle—and before you can even scream the bird girl plucks your head off with her beak. and and and what if it were like a sexual thing

Character mannerisms to consider!
Mannerisms, in this case, are the little details that are unique to each character of your story! These are perfect ways help the reader know more about your character’s personality without needing to read through multiple sentences of description or dialogue. Mannerisms also become incredibly useful when you need to convey things like social status, upbringing, mental health status and how they interact with the world/people around them.
There are hundreds of unique ways to use mannerisms, for example linking one character to another despite their lack of interaction in the story. The dialogue and description might point to Character A having never met Character B, but they might share the same mannerisms, which would hint to some kind of past link between the pair.
How much space do they take up? Do they spread out when they sit or stay curled-up? Do they flail their arms to gesture? Do they speak loudly or quietly? Who listens when they speak up? Do they make a sound when they move?
How does your character sleep? What position? Do they sleep restlessly or soundly? Do they prefer covers, or do they sleep without?
How does your character greet people? Are they welcoming or reserved? How genuine are they being?
How much do they mirror others? Do they mirror everyone? (Mirroring is a subconscious behaviour where two+ people in a conversation will copy one another’s body language. This usually means there is a connection of some kind being made. Lack of / exaggerated mirroring might indicate towards a mental disorder or other (ex: personality disorder, neurodiversity, anxiety etc)
Which part of their body is the most expressive? Does your character use their hands a lot or do they tuck them away? Do they need movement to ground themselves (swaying, rocking, fidgetting…)?
Who would your character turn to in a group of people for comfort? Would they acknowledge that person more? Would they engage in a conversation with only them or would they just glance their way?
Do they have a re-occuring habit to indicate a mood? Do they crack their knuckles when excited? Do they bite their lip ring when angry? Do they look at their hands when sad?
How do they gesture? Do they speak with their hands? Do they point, nod or use their eyes to show something? Which movements are conscious, and which aren't?
Do they have a comfort item or person? Is there something they always think of? Is there something they hold with care? How much do they value that thing more than others?
How would they react to another person’s misfortune? Would their eyes light up? Would their heart hurt? How genuine would they feel? How genuine would they act?
Is there anything that makes them OOC (out of character)? (This is a good thing! One tiny OOC aspect can make a huge impact on that character) Perhaps they’re cruel but love cats? Perhaps they’re known for being the kindest but smile when they think of something tragic? How often do they act strangely? Do they do it in front of anyone? Do their actions indicate this or solely their thoughts?
I hope this helps you develop your characters! If you have anything to add, feel free to do so!
