Everyone comments on how Jack Sparrow mainly worked off the tension of Depp playing a fairly conventional dashing rogue role in a wildly eccentric way, and not so much when future movies were written with his performance in mind but also he's not actually the lead in the first films, he's a supporting character (in the first one, and co-lead thereafter) & the leads are Keira Knightley & Orlando Bloom. Turns out making the quirky supporting character the most important character is bad actually. One of the few cases where "duller" characters being the lead was actually vital
