I wasn’t into Verstave or whatever the ship was called while playing the game (on account of they never actually interact, and one of them letting the other get killed kind of puts a damper on romance,) but! I have read a lot of fanfiction, and now I want to write a very very vaguely inspired by The Phantom of the Opera thing. There has been a rumor for years about a ghost haunting the opera house, but it’s actually just Verso who periodically has Esquie drive him back to Lumière to refill his wine stash/check on Maelle. He lays low in a secret passageway under the opera house, where he occasionally comes out to play the piano and be sad about it. Is this a healthy way to deal with things? Of course not. It’s Verso.

Meanwhile, Gustave regularly gets called on to do repairs around the opera house, because if there’s one thing I know about theaters, it’s that shit is constantly breaking down. He’s initially spooked when he hears the piano playing and can’t find anyone else in the opera house when he goes to investigate, but, well. The music is nice, and if this IS a ghost, at least they don’t seem to be making any other trouble. So in the spirit of trying to get on the ghost’s good side, Gustave leaves a note on the piano bench, thanking the ghost for the performance while he worked.

Meanwhile meanwhile, Verso is desperately lonely, and this is the first human connection outside of the Expeditions he’s had in a very long time, so he plays along. What’s the harm, if he doesn’t let anyone catch him? He writes back on the note, asking that kindly repair man if he has any song requests.

So they start communicating back and forth, through written notes and music, without ever speaking face and face. And then feelings happen.

Does this change anything that happens eventually on a certain cliff? Who knows!

Verso is pretty much fully immortal so I like to believe that when the party wipes and you get that You Died Expedition Failed screen Verso has fully given up and is just sobbing into the dirt until doomsday
