“Siempre juntos, Horacio”

La frase pesa en su mente. Pesa en su pecho. Pesa en su mirada húmeda, fija en las palabras talladas en piedra:

«Viktor Volkov. 1982-2023. Aquí descansa el agente del FIB, siempre recordado como un hombre amable y leal, protegiendo a sus seres queridos hasta el fin de sus días. »

La leyenda no miente. Amable y leal, rasgos muy característicos del ruso, más presentes que nunca una vez regresó a Los Santos. Y el final de la oración… ese final que le hace tragar una amargura insoportable, es una verdad.

Una verdad que deja herida, que perdura incluso en este instante. E, indudablemente, seguirá abierta en el futuro más lejano.

Se atormenta cada mañana, cada tarde, cada noche. Pensando, imaginando que, si tan sólo hubiese manejado mejor la situación, Volkov estaría aquí. Sano y salvo. A su lado.

Pero la realidad se aleja completamente de aquella fantasía.

El daño ya está hecho. Lo único que queda del hombre son sus pertenencias, las fotografías, los hijos felinos que juntos prometieron cuidar, las memorias. Deseando con su ser que estas últimas no le fallen, anhelando que los momentos preciosos siempre lo acompañen, y que los sienta como si fueran la primera vez. Que su corazón guarde con total cariño toda emoción compartida en cada rincón.

Consiente de que no puede ahogarse en los lamentos, ya que el tiempo no retrocede, en algún punto deberá levantarse y seguir a delante. Continuar sin su pareja, sin el amor de su vida…

En el reflejo de sus lágrimas se encuentra el dolor, el peor que ha experimentado, más profundo que cualquier bala que haya atravesado su cuerpo alguna vez.

Extiende su mano libre y toca la pierda; fría, idéntica al invierno que se come la ciudad. Tiembla, recordando las noches donde el cálido abrazo de su amado era lo único que importaba, y la tranquilidad lo único que existía. El confort que nunca volverá, y que recordará para toda la vida.

Daría lo que fuera para regresar a esa última madrugada que pasaron juntos; acostados en la cama, los gatos a sus pies, envuelto en los brazos pálidos y recibiendo leves carisias en su cresta. Luego, esa suave promesa.

“Siempre juntos, Horacio”

—… siempre juntos, Volkov.

Así, el octavo ramo de flores descansa sobre la tumba.

He does have a heartbeat.

He didn't, not that first night after the End of the World.

Not until Jayce laid his head on his chest the next morning, listened, and frowned. "It's quiet."

Viktor's entire body jerked, the part of him that was still starlight — it had been slowly becoming solid over the past hours, relearning and rebuilding itself — pulsing.

After his head stopped spinning, Viktor would recall the feeling of his body remembering.

They both felt the sudden drum of his first heartbeat thud against his ribcage. It sputtered then, skipped, multiple beats in a row, silences that were too long, hit hard and then soft.

It is ten minutes later, when they have shifted so that Viktor's chest presses against Jayce's, his large heart leading Viktor's like a conductor, that it relearns its rhythm.
