Wanting to use c.ai but know it's not good for your mental health or the environment? Still want to roleplay a scenario but either don't want to roleplay with someone else or nobody wants to roleplay with you?

ROLEPLAY WITH YOURSELF!!

No, seriously! It can be fun!! It won't work for everybody, but I've found that it works for me sometimes. There are multiple ways to do it, but my favorite is to make a private discord server, add tupperbox to it, and use that.

Not only is this better and safer than c.ai, but coming up with a scenario and thinking of how the character(s) would react to it engages your creativity.

And if this isn't fun for you, there's always fanfiction, too. Writing a fic isn't that far removed from self-roleplaying, and you don't even have to share it with anyone! Go ahead, write that "cringey" self-insert fic and keep it locked away in the depths of your google docs forever. Nobody's stopping you!

edit: people are starting to say some "my worst nightmare" or "eeeww no that one is yucky and scary" comments on this like they do on any bug post and id like to say. it's fine if you don't like bugs it's fine if you're scared of bugs but don't put that on MY post clearly talking about how much i like them and how cute i think they are. you can make your own damn post about how much you hate wasps or spiders or whatever. i'm blocking people who make these kinds of comments.

”getting thicker skin” is great in theory but I think for some people “get better at handling your thin skin” is gonna be way more helpful advice. I have strong emotional reactions to criticism and they might never go away, but i can continue to try and handle each situation maturely and that’s the important part. Sometimes irrational feelings are chronic and living with them is better than trying to beat yourself up into not having them.

saw an elderly woman walking around with a tote bag whose design were the four AO3 fic category squares and she very excitedly asked if i was a reader or a writer bcs nobody else at the con had recognized it, and after telling her that i've been writing fic since fanfic.net, she solemnly nodded and explained that she'd been reading fic since "the days of personal websites" but that she only started writing fanfic when she was 47 and oh my god when i tell you that i genuinely teared up on the spot!!!!! like!!! HELL YEAH???? LITERALLY NEVER TOO OLD TO START WRITING. NEVER TOO OLD TO WRITE AND SHARE YOUR FIC.

her enthusiastic "i'm a very nice and bubbly person, i swear! but i love writing angst and major character death :)" nearly took me the fuck out.

No. Sydney is the Tumblrina. Jedidiah goes on there maybe twice a month to post some longwinded addition to some poor viral post as "science side of tumblr" and only (only) Sydney reblogs it.
