Watson's Angry Bisexual Army
95 posts
A network of angry bisexuals and their allies, rallied behind the glory of our snarkily raging general, John Watson. We run fanwork challenges, raise money for queer charities, and otherwise channel our world-weary rage in queer-positive directions....

A new report by the National Union of Students reports on life for bisexual, transgender, lesbian and gay students today. While it is often ‘lumpy’ in its treatment of data – combining bisexual, lesbian and gay experience into one – the report does have some findings on bi experience. For example:
“Only 40 per cent of bisexual respondents are out to their family, compared to 72.5 per cent of gay and 77 per cent of lesbian respondents; 82 per cent are out to their friends, compared to 96 per cent of gay and lesbian respondents; and slightly more than one in 10 bisexual students are out to academic staff, compared to 40 per cent of gay and a third of lesbian respondents.”
This ties in with other research over the last few years which has shown bi workers are less likely to feel they can be open about their orientation in the workplace than gay and lesbian staff. Bi students are also more likely to have considered dropping out of university courses than gay or straight students, and are to feel less able to speak up during classes or to be welcomed as a participant in group activities than their lesbian or gay peers.
However the report’s recommendations are disappointing, urging action by universities and student unions only on homophobia and transphobia.
You can read it in full here.

And his legs are damn fine in those tights” *John what boner watson* And then John going to meet sherlock after the show and sherlock’s covered in a light sweat and his curls have loosened from the hairspray and he’s got a towel hung over his shoulder and a duffle bag. Last (official) Day of the Challenge!
Today is July 31st, which means the deadline for the Sherlockian Bi Fanworks Challenge is tonight at midnight. If you committed to creating a fanwork for the challenge, please send it to us using the form on our submit page sometime today.
While today is technically the deadline, we want great bi representation in Sherlock fanworks all the time! I’m leaving the AO3 collection open for new works indefinitely. Feel free to create more fanworks based on the prompts and headcanons that were submitted, even if they were already claimed by others. More variety is always better, and any fic that prominently features a well-represented bi character is welcome.
We’ll release a list of all fics submitted for the challenge in a day or two, once everyone’s had a chance to submit.
Thank you so much to everyone who helped organize the challenge, submitted prompts, and committed to create!

Name Change Results
The vote was nearly unanimous to make the change to Watson’s Angry Bisexual Army! Thanks for making it easy, y’all. That was my vote, too. I’m pretty slammed right now, but as soon as I have some time I’ll get the url changed and redo the graphics to reflect the new name. I appreciate your input and patience with this. And NOW, I can design shiny new WABA buttons for Gridlock >D

Name Change?
Hello, MABA members and fans. I have an important question for your consideration that I hope to have an answer to before Gridlock DC next week. I’m planning to make Angry Bi Army buttons to hand out, but the question is: should it be Martin’s army, or John Watson’s?
From the start, Martin’s Angry Bisexual Army has been very clear in making NO statements regarding Martin’s actual sexual orientation. That’s his personal business, and he actively resists labeling himself, which is fine—he’s a real human who deserves his privacy, and no one should have their sexuality decided for them. However, he has been very queer-positive in interviews and has actually acknowledged the existence of bisexuals, which is more than most people do. So, we’ve rallied behind him to become a force for bisexual representation in the Sherlock fandom. That said, it is very easy to misunderstand if one looks only at the MABA name and not at our about page, and it has prevented some from engaging with us when they might otherwise do so. So, MABA folks, what shall we do? Stick with MABA, or shift our brand a bit to be more closely allied with the confirmed bisexual John Watson instead? Options:
Martin’s Angry Bisexual Army
Watson’s Angry Bisexual Army
John’s Angry Bisexual Army
I’ve owned all three urls from the beginning, so that’s no problem. I know what my vote is, but I feel like network members should have a say in this, so I’m tagging everyone below the Read More. All opinions welcome. Thank you for your help with this decision!

John, wounded and silent, drifts back to Baker Street for healing…and then goes home again. He visits, gets more upbeat, chattier, smiles, jokes… and still goes home again. Sherlock wants him to move back in - it just makes sense - but John shows no signs of doing so.
This is the story of how John and Sherlock learn to say what needs to be said when they’re both so very, very rubbish at talking.

A quick reminder that the challenge ends in just under one week! Friday, July 31st is the deadline. Those who have signed up, please submit your fanworks according to the guidelines above.
It’s not too late to participate, either! Just send in your work by July 31st and you’ll make it onto the final masterlist.
Looking forward to reading your submissions!
The Sherlockian Bi Fanworks Challenge
Tumblr media
In celebration of Pride Month, Martin’s Angry Bisexual Army is sponsoring a fanworks challenge to encourage the generation of Sherlockian fanworks with accurate, nuanced, sensitive portrayals of bi* characters.
HOW IT WORKS
From June 5th to June 30th, EVERYONE is invited to submit Sherlockian bisexual/biromantic prompts and headcanons to Martin’s Angry Bisexual Army.
MABA will compile them into a running list on our page for creators to claim.
Prompts are eligible to claim as soon as they are posted to the prompts page, and works can be submitted as soon as they are complete. Non-prompted works that fit the guidelines are also welcome.
All claimed prompts must be fulfilled (or at least the first chapter, in the case of longer works) by July 31st.
GUIDELINES
Create a fanwork of any kind that prominently features an accurate, nuanced, sensitive portrayal of at least one bisexual/biromantic character. Any character is fair game, even if they aren’t typically read as bi in canon or fanon. All types of fanwork are welcome: fic (long or short), artwork, video, meta, gifset, filk, original music, crafting, manips, poetry …  whatever you want to make, it’s welcome here. Please note that MABA uses bi* as an umbrella term for all non-monosexual identities (bi, pan, fluid, etc.). For more information, see our Bi Awareness and FAQ post.
MORE INFO
How can I submit a bi-related prompt or headcanon?
Use the ask or submit feature on the Martin’s Angry Bisexual Army blog. So long as it meets the guidelines we will add it to our prompts page, where it will be eligible to be claimed by a fanworks creator. You are welcome to remain anonymous if you’d like, or have your name attached to your prompt. When submitting your prompt, you can mention who you want the bi character to be, plus any details about their portrayal you’d like included, or be vague and let the creator choose!
How do I claim a prompt?
Browse through our prompts page and select a prompt you’re interested in fulfilling. Send us an ask or an e-mail with your tumblr name, or the name you post your works under if you don’t have one. We will add your name next to the prompt to let others know that it has been claimed. Please do not claim more than one prompt at a time. However, once you finish your first fanwork, please feel free to claim additional prompt!
Can more than one person claim a prompt?
Sure, but for the sake of variety we’ll limit it to two claims per prompt per medium (two fic authors, two artists, etc.). If there’s something you’re absolutely dying to work on but it’s already been claimed, though, let’s be honest—it’ll be fine.
I have an idea of my own. Do I have to claim a prompt?
Absolutely not. Create what you want to create, so long as it adheres to our guidelines. We’d still appreciate it if you’d shoot us an ask so we can add you to our list of creators.
Can I team up with a friend?
Sure! Friends are fun! Just be sure to include the names of all participants when claiming your prompt.
How do I know if it’s an accurate, nuanced, sensitive portrayal?
Our Bi Awareness & FAQ post is a great place to start. Please pay special attention to the ‘harmful stereotypes’ section, and check out the links on writing bi characters. You can also consult with a bi beta reader. Reach out to Martin’s Angry Bisexual Army via tumblr ask or email to be connected with one.
What do I do when I finish my fanwork?
Upload it to the archive of your choice (AO3, tumblr, deviantart, youtube, etc.), then submit or send an ask via the MABA tumblr. Please tag your works thoroughly and use any content warnings that may apply. We’d love it if you’d use our form so we can let everyone know what they’re clicking on. We’ll reblog your work and add it to our Bi Fanworks Challenge masterpost. We’ll also create a collection on AO3.
If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to drop us an ask or e-mail: librarylock [at] gmail [dot] com.
We can’t wait to see all of your amazing bi fanworks!

you have to understand though i don’t actually know or care what martin freeman’s true sexual orientation is, but the fact that he consistently says the most bi thing possible whenever the opportunity arises is still reason enough for me to throw my head back and cackle because he laughs in the face of heteronormativity and no one can stop him
