It is my pleasure to finally be able to share with you the project that I've been working on for the past 2 years!
For my final project for my masters degree, I decided to create a visual development artbook for an animated movie adaptation of the Leviathan trilogy by Scott Westerfeld. This 100+ page long book contains all the research that I put into this project, from sketches and concept art to final designs and illustrations, as well as explanations of my creative process.
I am aware that the timing is not ideal, but I promise that this has absolutely nothing to do with the upcoming Netflix adaptation! That adaptation wasn't announced until after I'd completed my project, and I had absolutely no idea that it was happening. This is a fully fan-made project, and has no affiliation with Scott Westerfeld whatsoever.
All that being said: I hope you enjoy! This was a very long labour of love, and I am so so happy to finally share it with you all. These books hold a very special place in my heart, and it is my sincerest hope that my work manages to do them justice.
i’m in the middle of re-reading this trilogy and like, i should re-read it every year?? what have i been doing this whole time… I love these books and these two goofs, why were we ever apart??
“Outfit Swap”
Leviathan request. Alek and Deryn swap uniforms.
Deryn: “Give me the biggest, meanest walker you’ve got for me to pilot!”
Alek: “Uh, maybe you should start with something a bit smaller, Hauptmann Sharp.”
Bovril: “Smaller.”
wouldn't you like to bring a message lizard to a concert hall, have it record, and then send it to random rooms in the Leviathan and have it blast Mahler symphonies randomly
I recently went back and re-read Scott Westerfeld 's Leviathan Trilogy and had a craving to do some fanart. It's also a nice start for me to get comfortable in drawing humans. ...I also low-key want an animated series/movies >.>

As you scramble up the last few dorsal scales of the bowhead, the airship behind you, the endless expanse of sky fills your vision ahead. There is no certain horizon, just black night and sea meeting at some imparticlar point in the distance. The stars emerge from the sea like shells washed ashore, casting their pale light back onto the white capped waves, silent at the lofty height of a thousand feet.
Copses of clouds dot the sky around you, looking close enough to run your hands through as they float by. A bright moon draws their long shadows across the water.
Although the airship is asleep, its cilia silent, the engines thrum softly, pushing a cool breeze through your hair and down the veins of your flight suit. A chill passes through you, and suddenly it seems terribly lonely up here.
You kneel against the cold scales, casting your eyes back along the length of the airship. There is, of course, not a soul in sight. The riggers and their sniffers are long asleep. The hawks back in their cages, the bats nestled deep in their coves. The moon casts your shadow long against the length of the spine.
