The Concept of a Paperless Office
There will always be some paper in every office, ranging from receipts to contracts & agreements thus making this concept if you think about it some way off, but I can’t think of any company out there that wouldn’t like to reduce its paper consumption, whilst communicating faster and more efficiently with its customers....

Take 2: #InformationManagement in #Nigeria
(Dr. Oyewole, IIM Governing Council chairman’s views on Information Management - Interview by James Emejo in 2015..)
What does the country stand to lose if she fails to adopt best practice in information management? There can never be any meaningful development in the Country if information management remains relegated to the background.  For government decisions to be effective, there would be need for quality data and information. In Nigeria today, past government administrations could not deliver the dividend of democracy due to the fact that government decisions, operations and budget has always been based on unreliable data, including their inability to ascertain the population of citizens, lack of accurate crude Oil production data since independence, little or no accurate data on birth/death rate, unemployment, healthcare among others.
The country will continue to struggle with issues like development and security if information management is not brought to the front burner, and government will find it difficult to promote transparency, accountability, and ultimately unable to discourage corruption.
What is the attitude of public and private organisations towards information management Information Management is beginning to gain the desired ground within the private sector, although there exist opportunities for improvement. The public sector, the largest employer of labour is yet to kick-off both at State and Federal level with exception of some States which has over the years embarked on some Information management projects, although poorly funded and thereby discouraging to the professionals saddled with the responsibilities of managing those information.
What is the level of the country’s compliance with information management practice? Since there are no known laws governing data management and privacy, it would be baseless assessing the level of compliance in the Country. My advice would be for the Law makers to, as a matter of urgency pass the data privacy bill into Law. One other issue that is worrisome is the national identity project. Without a data privacy law, it would be difficult to monitor how information will be used, shared and managed between the government agency handling the project and their international project partners.

Information Management is Key to Security, & Meaningful Development
Oyewole: The President/Chairman of the Governing Council, Institute of Information Management (IIM) Africa
Addressing the current security challenges and achieving meaningful development in the country could still be elusive if information management principle is sidelined. In an interview with James Emejo, he appraises among other things, the country’s level of compliance with global best practice
On the concept of information management practice he posited that Information management has to do with the creation, collection and management of information from one or more sources and how information is classified, used, shared, retained, accessed and disposed. Thereby, ensuring that information is only available to authorized personnel or those with right to that information with control over the structure, processing and delivery of information.
History of the IIM?
The Institute of Information Management (IIM) is a professional membership driven Institute, developed to serve the growing community of Data, Information, Records, Document and Archives Management professionals who are tasked with managing the dynamic information life cycle within the enterprise.  The Institute was established by the Records and Information Management Awareness (RIMA) Foundation in 2010, following the various gaps identified in the information management industry in Nigeria and Africa ranging from lack of records and information management standards, competence, certification etc. The Institute since inception has also been involved in identifying gaps within the various sectors of the economy and also proffering solutions to them under the Data Access Intervention Initiative (DAII). Recently, the Institute Introduced MedicPurse, a solution developed to help bridge the information gap within the health sector, thereby allowing medical practitioners and other care givers access to quality patients health records from any internet enabled device.
Government & information management in Nigeria
Government urgently need to
give adequate attention to proper management of information by empowering  various government agencies through capacity building and investment in the development of infrastructures required for good information governance in the Country. These are the primary tools any serious minded government should be paying attention to, without which it would be difficult for them to deliver on their electoral promises.
Today in Nigeria, Government projection when preparing the annual budget is usually based on information which cannot really be substantiated by any quality fact and that remained the primary reason why the citizens have not been enjoying the dividend of democracy for years. Result can only be derived when government decisions, security agencies, parastatals, etc based their decision making on quality information.
ensure that all government agencies are held accountable for service delivery by assessing what needs to be done in preparation to make plans and decide what choices and risks that will shape those plans. The shape of such an assessment should be to establish a small task force with responsibility for developing an action plan; review the current condition of information, content and supporting infrastructure in all government agencies and parastatals; and map the output from the review against best practice to identify necessary actions.
Things are working in other parts of the world not because they are more knowledgeable or intelligent than us, but because they give priority to quality data collection and processing, on which informed decisions are being made.
What does increased certification ‎of public and private agencies by external bodies in recent times i.e info security certification say about information management in Nigeria?
Personally, I believe certification is good and also encouraged. In practical terms, do those agencies really have what it takes to maintaining those certifications? Individuals and organisations in this part of the world only prepare to take and pass certification testing and requirements. How that translates into business process improvement is another issue. The positive aspect of the crave for certification is that, it will continue to promote the awareness for proper management and security of information in the society, and with time it will become part of our culture.
Is Nigeria in tune with global standard & What is the quality of information management in the country? Still very low, as there isn’t any reliable source in the Country as at today, that one can really base the assessment on.  There is need for government to support efforts of individuals and organisations in the country working to ensure that the Information Management industry in the country is standardized and fully developed.
The Institute of Information Management (IIM), has initiated a good number of standards, certifications and data access intervention initiatives all aimed at ensuring reliable and quality information in the society, which we think the government should encourage and leverage on some the best practices and lessons learned the platform has got to offer the Country and the entire African continent

Selecting a tool is not the end of the process; it’s only the beginning.
For companies aiming for resilience and beyond, EHS or GRC systems facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration, guide resource allocation and show results of all these efforts. In this manner, the platform itself is not a panacea, but an enabler of excellence when combined with the right people and processes.
The danger is buying technology without a really solid strategy, but once the correct solution is in place, technology gets the whole organization operating toward common goals.
All systems have strengths and weaknesses, and addressing those head on as a company prevents systematic gaps in information and holes in EHS programs. But it must be done by example, from decision-makers to every team. Ultimately, universal adoption leads to better data and improved morale.
Rewards and benefits are not always immediate; results and data are only useful with time. It’s strategic thinking and commitment that is important to realize upon adoption of a tool.

Success seems to come down to choosing to invest in the power of automation
Enablon co-founder and CEO, North America, Phil Tesler opened the conference by asking companies to factor in the increase of "black swan" events, including Fukushima and Deepwater Horizon, in their risk management activities. Considering these along with the value drivers of Enablon’s system, it’s difficult to find a good reason not to do this. Which brings us back to the start: Organizational stress impairs decision-making in organizations.
"EHS systems can mitigate 'cultural drift' and enable excellence," said Nadler. However, getting leadership to invest in risk management can be difficult when day-to-day operational investment priorities take precedence.
"The do-more-for-less syndrome for some industries has shifted to do lots more with lots less," said Taylor-Woodyard. But change is constant, and resources and funding are always limited. Today’s world of instant communication and hyper-fast social media is making the world more transparent whether we like it or not.
"You need to think ahead, to be strategic and set up systems that are readily adjustable to changing conditions," said Taylor-Woodyard, who offered her own definition for resilience: "the ability to match the speed of play with the reaction time of your systems."
By examining organizational resilience as a product of technology, people and process, the panelists catapulted the concept into the realm of systems thinking. But how do companies go beyond resilience when so many still struggle with compliance? The answer lies somewhere between technology and process — that is, with people.
"Turning constraints into opportunities" may sound cliché to some, but the strategy is working for Enablon and its users. Enablon’s growth is a testament to the value of harnessing an opportunity hiding in plain sight — in this case, leveraging the innovation potential within compliance.
Success seems to come down to choosing to invest in the power of automation, and then collaborating to fully realize the potential. Enablon’s vision is becoming sharper each year and its peer network is getting stronger, which increases opportunities for collaboration. As managers learn more, they are overcoming the obstacles with every module they adopt, each process they cultivate and each user they train.
"Managers can definitely take a 'wait and see' approach using institutional knowledge," said Taylor-Woodyard, "or you can get in the swim lane to drive positive transformation in your own organization using an EHS system as your guide."

Your best customer is also your competitor’s.
This is something most of us may not know or may tend to overlook.
Customer experience definitely drives Investment returns though authors of a new book,  The Wallet Allocation Rule: Winning the Battle for Share  , believe that the model most of us have been using is not just slightly wrong, but completely wrong.
The drill we all know: Provide a great customer experience -> Make customers happy -> Build loyalty -> Get more wallet share -> Grow your market share.
According to Keiningham, Global Chief Strategy Officer for Ipsos Loyalty & co-author of the book, the fundamental flaw with relying solely on customer satisfaction to drive loyalty and wallet share is that, quite simply, these metrics don’t link to share of spending.
“The strength of the relationship between customer satisfaction and share of spending is so incredibly weak that it’s managerially not relevant,” he said. “There is no payback with customer behavior.”
He added that in order to gain market share, managers would actually need to accept lower satisfaction levels by appealing to a larger, more diverse customer base. This explains why niche brands have such high satisfaction rates
Rather than throwing out customer satisfaction metrics, the authors have come up with a simple, scientifically-based formula that businesses can use to find out what kind of financial outcomes are tied to their customer experience efforts named The Wallet Allocation Rule which forces marketers to shift from focusing on customer satisfaction score to the ranking of those scores in relation to your competitors.
So, basically, companies will not only score themselves, but score their competition, as well, in addition to gathering information about why customers use competitors.
On getting better metrics...

Archivists Share Practical Metadata Advice
A panel of archivists recently shared their experiences with metadata management to a room full of eager young archivists (more on that later) during a pop-up session at The Society of American Archivists annual meeting in Cleveland, Ohio.
The power of metadata & the gospel of metadata were among the topics spoken about....
Metadata is used to uniquely describe historical records and interestingly, no one from this panel suggested automated description. But they did recommend leveraging metadata power tools as much as possible. The more often that metadata is mapped across shared platforms, the more users will come to the archives. These speakers offered a simple roadmap to better metadata management for repositories.
The panel consisted of:
Maureen Callahan, Archivist & Metadata Specialist at Yale University
Regine Heberlein, Processing Archivist at Princeton University
Dallas Pillen, Project Archivist at Bentley Historical Library
