zine | not at the mall | phase 11 | flora/fauna | snowy owl
snowy owls have yellow eyes. their legs and feet are covered in white feathers to protect them from the cold weather.
the snowy owl hunts during the day, unlike most owls. this is an adaptation from the 24 hour sun during arctic summers.
they usually eat lemmings and rodents, but have been known to also eat small domestic dogs.
snowy owls actually nest in the ground.
they are monogamous. when the female begins laying eggs, she lays one egg every other day.usually resulting in 3 to 11 white eggs.
the chicks hatch after 32 to 34 days. one egg hatches about every day. the chicks in a nest are different ages and different sizes.

the scientific name, mephitis, is the latin word for ‘bad odour’
about the size of a cat
belongs to the weasel family, mustelidae
glossy black fur with two white stripes along sides of body -- a distinctive warning to stay away
skunks are not normally aggressive but if threatened, will stamp front feet, growl, raise their tails, hiss and/or spray the contents of their anal scent glands up to three metres
efficient mousers, they also eat insects, eggs, frogs and young birds
live in abandoned dens of other mammals, only occasionally dig their own dens, or find a home in stumps, rock piles, garbage heaps, or under a house or porch
they don’t truly hibernate but become inactive in the coldest months
not usually social, skunks will den with other skunks in order to share body warmth
mating happens after emergence from winter dens in the spring

austria-born artist, alexander von svoboda was commissioned to create a large tile mural in 1964 at the charles camsell hospital. the mosaic was in a walkway.
the hospital was named after charles camsell (1876–1958), a geologist and mapmaker who explored canada's north.
the hospital operated out of the 114 ave building starting in 1967. the department of indian and eskimo affairs, established the northern medical research unit there.
stigma has surrounded the hospital as it is alleged that the aboriginal population was treated poorly, abused, and murdered. some say children who died there were buried out behind the hospital.
the hospital was officially de-established in 1993.
the alberta government sold the property to architect, gene dub in 2004. the property has sat largely undeveloped.

it's the gibbard block (6425-112 avenue)
it was constructed in 1912 by william t. gibbard and two partners
gibbard was the president of the gibbard furniture company of ontario
the buidling was designed by ernest morehouse, an edmonton-based architect. he had designed many area homes.
it was originally a luxury apartment building with retail shops on the main floor
since 1982, la boheme, a restaurant/bed and breakfast, has operated out of the gibbard block; a provincially designated historic site

it's the st. joseph's cathedral basilica
it is the only basilica in alberta
in 1917, st. joseph's became a separate parish when the english speaking and french speaking parishioners at st. joachim’s were given their own parishes. the french speakers remained at st. joachim's while the english speakers moved over to st. joseph's.
construction halted until 1924 because of the great war. that's when archbishop o'leary designated the unfinished building as the cathedral for the diocese
construction stopped again during the years of the great depression and the second world war
planning for a new design began in 1954
the building was finally completed and officially opened on may 1, 1963
janet jones married wayne gretzky at the basilica on july 16, 1988
here's the google map
