❰ 𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧 𝗠𝗜𝗞𝗘 ❱ One of the most inspiring stories we have ever featured here on Pangaea, Mike Coots is a surfer, photographer, shark attack survivor, and shark advocate. At the age of 18 he lost his leg in a shark attack and now surf’s with a specially designed prosthetic leg, and although Mike was faced with such a traffic situation, his love for the sea never wavered and still dedicates his life to taking some of the most incredible shark photography that you’ve ever seen... Check out his story below. #wearepangaea ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿: @mikecoots ⠀⠀ ❰ 𝗕𝗘𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 ❱ When Coots was 18, a shark took him by surprise when it bit his leg. In an attempt to save his life, he punched the shark twice in the face before it swam away. ⠀⠀ The attack happened in late October right after I turned 18. The shark looked like a submarine that came from below and started rag-dolling me. I gave it two or three solid punches, got back on my board and realized my finger was cut open, but had no idea my leg had been bitten off. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I looked over my shoulder and saw my leg was missing from my body, caught a wave to the sand, got a tourniquet and hauled my ass to the hospital in the back of a truck. I had surgeries for about a week or so, they amputated my leg and I was bandaged up for a few weeks, the staples came out a month later and I was right back to bodyboarding at the same beach, but a bit further down from the attack. ⠀⠀ Amazingly, Coots was back in the water only a month after the attack. "Being out of the water while the wounds healed was the hardest part of the attack. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❰ 𝗠𝗜𝗞𝗘 𝗢𝗡 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗖 𝗪𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘 ❱ My Hope is for people to realise how important the ocean is before we reach a tipping point. We can’t kick the can down the road any longer, we can’t pass this problem on to future generations. People can use their purchasing power, buy sustainable seafood, don’t choose products packaged with a bunch of plastic waste. We need to come together and change things before it’s too late. ⠀⠀ •• 𝗣𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗔𝗘𝗔 • 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 • 𝗖𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 • 𝗔𝗗𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 •• « #hawaii #shark #sharkattack #mikecoots #stories » (at Hawaii) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-w5GSWhnlU/?igshid=fy9hfy9n9d1f

Read below to understand the current situation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝟮 ➵ By Donald - Meet James Ole Moonca, revered Maasai elder and Chairman of the Kitenden Conservancy, a crucial wildlife corridor on the brink of Amboseli National Park. He and his fellow pastoral Maasai have coexisted successfully here for centuries employing traditional conservation measures to live in harmony with lions, elephants, giraffes and more. However, increased wildlife trade, population expansion, climate change, and disputes on land use, puts the livelihoods of the Maasai people and the greater Kilimanjaro ecosystem at risk.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Despite the overwhelming difficulties faced by these modern day pressures, Moonca encourages local communities to recognize the importance of wildlife, empowering them to protect it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❰ 𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪 ❱ Most Maasai wear the color red because it not only symbolises their culture but they also believe it scares away lions. They also drink Cows blood through a bamboo tube that apparently makes their body strong, wow! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ •• 𝗣𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗔𝗘𝗔 • 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 • 𝗖𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 • 𝗔𝗗𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 •• « #africa #safari #kenya #maasai #wildlife » (at Kenya) https://www.instagram.com/p/B97ksu_B6Qk/?igshid=1m52a8tdl0pra

❰ 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗘𝗦 ❱ Time to get to know a little more about animals that we don’t usually encounter in our everyday life, the Manatee, ever come across one of these guys before? #wearepangaea ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿: @liam__maclean ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❰ 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗡 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 ❱ Thanks to Liam and Min who captured this animal in all it’s beauty, he says: Manatees like this dude are coming in from the gulf to seek the warmer waters of the freshwater springs as the ocean temperatures drop. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These large gentle creatures, often known locally as sea cows can weigh 1000 lbs and measure one to four meters in length. They breath air, and so surface frequently, meaning that if manatees are nearby, it is likely you will spot them. It is also possible to swim with the manatee — they pose no threat to humans, eating only plants. Due to their habitat preferences, manatees are most common on the south-west coast of Jamaica where rivers feed into wetlands but are occasionally sighted on the north coast too. Small in number, they are protected by law and closely monitored. 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲: @culturetrip ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❰ 𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪 ❱ Thanks to Nat Geo we managed to gather a few interesting facts about Manatees. 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲: @natgeo ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ➵ Manatess are related to elephants, not dolphins or whales. ➵ A west Indian Manatee can weigh more than 1,200 pounds / 450kg ➵ Florida manatees congregate at power plant discharge pipes, where the water is warm. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ •• 𝗣𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗔𝗘𝗔 • 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 • 𝗖𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 • 𝗔𝗗𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 •• « #florida #manatees #animals #unitedestates #travel » (at Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/B94CJsJhcJZ/?igshid=1nea54kv7rbg6
