The mangroves, with their thick, gnarled roots and tangled branches, are a vital part of the ecosystem, providing a habitat for a variety of marine life and protecting the shoreline from erosion.

Sumba holds a special place in my heart and playing a part in the positive change in the lives of the Sumbanese people in health and economics over the last 20 years lead by the Sumba Foundation is very rewarding. They call Sumba “The Forgotten Island” and that it has been in Indonesia. The Sumba Foundation and the Nihi Sumba model, that of a non-profit working side by side with a for-profit business, each with its own role to play in to alleviate poverty in the region, was to be the economic engine of the Island. Hundreds of jobs were created in and outside of the resort. Without that employment there would have been no hope of lifting the community out of the harsh conditions they were living under. 2023 its a very different story, but the mission continues and education of the youth plays a big part!
