it has been a week since the FDA issued a notice about sacred tattoo ink tattoo inks contaminated with sepsis-causing bacteria, and I went and looked to see if they have actually been recalled by the company that manufacturers them.

instead I found an example of why you should not rely on these news summaries, and why that "may contain inaccuracies" is the most important thing there.

the FDA does not issue recalls for tattoo inks, even if they can REALLY hurt you. tattoo ink recalls are voluntary. the tattoo inks are still on the shelves. up to half of tattoo inks sold in the united states are contaminated with microbes. and most studied inks lie about their ingredients. because nobody is fucking stopping them.

although it has correct the part about being advised to avoid these inks, "the FDA has issued a recall" implies that the FDA is taking them off the shelves. the FDA has done, at most, ask really nicely for retailers and artists to stop carrying them. it is completely legal for tattoo artists to continue using them.

this was not a recall.
