’I brought books.’

‘I can see that,’ he replies evenly, eyeing the enormous bag as she shrugs it off and it hits the nearest chair with a thump.

’You’re gonna have to carry them upstairs. I think I slipped a disk.’ She sighs as she sits heavily, having traumatic flashbacks to the less enjoyable side of backpacking.

Jess smirks. ’I’ll get the forklift,’ he answers dryly, setting down the stack of dirty plates on the counter, abandoning them in favour of swinging around the table to investigate.

’Always knew that certification would come in handy.’ Rory puffs

I know I've mentioned before that Jess's delivery of "a niiiice fruit basket" is exactly like Bill Murray's delivery of that exact same line in Ghostbusters (I honestly think it's a reference), but now I'm getting this mental picture of Little Jess, as a kid who loved Ghostbusters (enough to be able to quote it years later) and wanted a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles birthday party. 😭

In the scene where Mitchum says to Rory that she 'doesn't have it', the argument mostly focuses on whether he was right or not, but I think it's also worth noting that he adds that she would 'make a good assistant'.

Many viewers dislike how Rory is characterised in S6 and how she acts in a more frivolous way and I think there's a clue to it in this line. Rory feels that the part of her which is caring, hardworking and does extra credit work on weekends is the part which would make her 'a good assistant', and so she tries to distance herself from it. In the past it was something which drove her but now it's a source of shame. Growing up, everyone praised her for those traits, and Rory saw that part of herself as proof that she belonged in Harvard (and later, Yale), but now her perspective is destroyed. If those traits are actually displaying the opposite of what Rory believed about herself, that she should be 'carrying a basket with sandwiches' at CNN, rather than working there, then why would she take pride in them? If Rory is wrong about this, what else is she wrong about? Does she have 'a false sense of pride'? Did she never belong in Yale in the first place?

There are other aspects of this storyline which add to Rory's burnout, but that part of the conversation stands out to me. Rory is embarrassed of who she is and wants to be someone more exciting, more fun, and not 'just' hardworking. She doesn't know who that person is, but in a sense it doesn't matter. It is only when Jess exclaims 'this isn't you!' that Rory begins to take a step back from her self-doubt, and considers that her place at Yale wasn't such a mistake after all, and she could be more than 'a good assistant'.
