Little & Large. I'm making the most of the dry weather this weekend and preparing some blanks for the week. A nice mix of two giant 23" Ash from last weekend, another live edge Ash and four small crotch blanks. Rocking the GB Lo Pro bar and now the Sthil 3614 ripping chain. Like the wings of a butterfly, the reflective symmetry of this bowl caught my eye. The new GB bar setup on the Stihl chainsaw makes splitting these Ash logs more straightforward. I wasn't sure about using a ripping chain, but taking the guys' advice at Forest Park & Garden was right. I put the standard chain back on to compare, and it was clearly not as good. I've finally got the big lump of Sycamore from last October onto the lathe. It's taken 2 attempts and almost 4 hours to get it to this point. More Pear on the lathe again. This time I'm turning my first deep hollow form vase. This log destroyed my chainsaw blade as it hid a giant old monster of a rusty nail. The weekend was another milling session. My reward for my efforts was some tremendous big Oak blanks and even more amazing spalted Pear, which I hope will turn into some fantastic large bowls. Turning this carvers mallet is another one of those little projects I hadn't got round to earlier. I made it from a block of Oak and some Ash scrapwood I already had in the workshop.
