The Millionaire Detective —Balance: UNLIMITED

‘Daisuke Kambe, a man of extraordinary wealth, is assigned to the Modern Crime Prevention Headquarters as a detective. It is there that he gets partnered with Haru Katou, a humane detective who values justice above all. The two are polar opposites, and their morals clash time and time again. Haru despises Daisuke for using monetary wealth to solve cases, as he believes that money isn't everything. The two will have to combine their efforts, however, to solve the mysteries that are coming their way.‘

Fugou Keiji (富豪刑事) is a very short mystery series that really makes you experience all the shocks, coolness of the characters, and capitalism (of course). This anime was quite the trend when it started airing but sadly now its stuck in the corner of our bookshelves. However, I definitely think that it deserves much more appreciation.

Let us talk about the content first. The first few episodes provide a light-hearted introduction to our main characters whether we found them relevant to the plot line or not. To say it in other words, the episodes were laying out the foundation to the mystery that our main character introduces to us in the first few minutes of episode 1. Although the pace of the anime does fasten up quite a bit and may appear sudden to viewers, I think it was well managed considering that the series is only 11 episodes long. The one thing that I found especially refreshing about the ending of Fugou Keiji was that while there was a clear judgement from our main characters, the writer(s) also left an ambiguous continuation of Katou and Kambe’s teamwork.

Now about the anime style. Very neat. Top tier. Daisuke hot. Yes. That should explain everything. Just kidding. I loooove the way they showed the technology and I want to take a while just to fangirl over the animation for the opening song “navigator” (I attached a small screenshot at the end ehehe). Slow motion, scene changes, colours and themes. All very beautifully executed. まさにcoolっていう感じ。If the plot is not your cup of tea then the art will definitely be.

Overall, I would like to say watching Fugou Keiji will allow you to experience it all: the comedy, the thrill, the awesomeness, the money (cough cough the atrociously high receipts at the end of each episode really make you question life), and the twist and turns of the plot line. Watching till the end left me simping over Daisuke and a fulfilled feeling of having seen the mystery solved. I must say, the plot twist revealed in the last episode caught me off guard ;)
