actually if you have a queer reading of Glinda in the Wicked musical/film you're being true to the source material
#surprisingly queer book#the canonical way I interpret this based on what I think might be within what Maguire intended is Glinda as a closeted social climber#and so isn't given an opportunity to explore because she's only able to think within Ozian hierarchies#she feels brave and vulnerable even sharing a bed with another woman because of the way it allows her to acknowledge even the possibility..#...of queerness and loving a woman#Maguire leaves SO MUCH up to a reader's interpretation in this book that I don't think that's an unreasonable analysis#I think people bounce hard off the Wicked novel sometimes because you need to be ready to read into things rather than have them explained#and not everyone's in the right headspace to do that when they decide to read it#anyway#sorry for just throwing this on here when I Do Not post about Wicked regularly#but I had to say this somewhere and if I sent this to family I would get eye rolls#and my friends don't know the musical for the most part

something you can do today is donate to an abortion fund in florida and to an abortion fund in south dakota since abortion rights measures failed there. you can find one to donate to in one of those states here: https://abortionfunds.org/find-a-fund/

if you're feeling powerless right now—and god knows I am—here's a reminder you can donate to the National Network of Abortion Funds, the Trans Law Center, Gaza Soup Kitchen, the Palestine Children's Relief Fund, and hundreds of other charities that will work to mitigate the damage that has been and will continue to be inflicted
life continues. we still have the capacity to do good, important work. that matters

Everything feels awful right now but it isn't really. We still don't officially have a winner, but regardless of how the presidential election ends up, I wanted to take a minute and find what lights I can in the 3 a.m. darkness. Here's what I know:
* Kentucky overwhelmingly rejected an attempt to undermine the public education system by offering private school vouchers:
* Delaware has elected a transgender woman to the House of Representatives, the first out trans person of any gender ever elected to congress:
* For the first time in history, two Black women will be serving in the senate at the same time, and they are only the fourth and fifth Black women ever elected to the senate:
* New York State has passed a constitutional amendment enshrining the rights of pregnant people (including the right to an abortion), LGBTQIA+ people, the disabled, immigrants regardless of legal status, and other at-risk groups:
* Democrat Josh Stein has beaten self-avowed Nazi Mark Robinson to become governor of North Carolina:
That's everything I know off the top of my head. It's not many bright spots, but it's not zero. I'm going to try to find more and I'll add them to the post. It's the only thing I can think of to do that isn't sobbing and throwing up or looking up Canadian immigration rules.
If you know more good news, I encourage you to add it in reblogs.

just a few quick thoughts here to especially my US folks (though I know that unfortunately our elections have ripple effects in the larger world too.) I know I don't post here much lately (combination of mental health and irl obligations) but I do still care about all you folks that I've talked with in the past. please take care of yourselves, and keep existing. this fucking sucks, but we need communities of people more than ever right now.
it's also okay to feel big feelings? maybe this is just the messaging I've been getting from irl folks (my family especially) but it's not "wallowing in despair" to feel sad and angry and scared. those emotions shouldn't take over your life, yes, but you can take a few days to process and feel things.
and, if you haven't yet, tell the folks you care about that you love them. like in 2016, hate is going to skyrocket. showing you care isn't going to fix that, but it helps fight the ripple effect.
#this is probably mostly incoherent but it's what I've been talking myself through#so I figured it's also worth posting#I'm incredibly lucky to have a relatively progressive immediate family and live in a blue state#but especially reach out to those folks currently stuck in red states#they need it#text#i may delete this later but i needed to get it out now#will probably go radio silent again for a while after this#. us election 2024 cw

A tip for excellent writing I just learned: Don't introduce a character with their Dramatic Backstory. It makes readers go "oh alright this is the Dramatic Background Story Character" and establishes a baseline of Tragic, either for the story as a whole or this character in particular. With no contrast of light and dark, pure darkness isn't impactful, it just looks like the absence of anything to look at.
If you really want someone's dramatic backstory to hit the audience like a gut punch, let them get to know the character first. That way the dark backstory doesn't come off as a description of who they are, but an explanation to why they are the way they are. Bonus points for connecting it to something that's already been established as a part of the character - what a devastating blow to suddenly put together that hold on, that funny quirky thing that they always do is a fucking trauma response.
