My headcanon about Dan's actions post-Bride is that he had been struggling to reconcile the image of heteronormative apple pie normality beaten deep into his psyche that he's terrified to break out of with his repressed bisexuality and secret depraved tendencies which were becoming harder and harder to ignore with every day he spends with Herbert, and he finally reaches a point in Bride where he realizes that he has to pick one or the other. Like if he stays with Herbert he's gonna want to go all the way down and never go back to a normal life, and the emotional momentum of escaping with Francesca combined with the fear and stress and resurfacing grief of losing Meg leads him to do something impulsive and drastic, in an attempt to make Herbert (and Dan's hidden feelings) disappear forever. Thirteen years and two divorces later, Dan looks reasonably well-adjusted to his coworkers but is honestly super depressed and misses Herbert desperately. He's done pretending suburban Americana is what he actually wants but is too tired and busy self-flagellating to know how to break out of the cycle, so when Herbert himself turns up at his doorway in the middle of the night, Dan's not angry or exasperated or scared anymore, he's just overwhelmingly relieved that the man he's been thinking about every day for twenty years is finally back in his life.....
