The library scene

…is so good.

When we see it for the first time in episode 12, everything looks pretty straightforward and simple (except for “Prayer” playing in the background for the first time and you just go “What is that? It’s so beautiful!?!?”).

Eiji spots Ash in the Rose Main Reading Room. He looks taken aback to see him like that but we don’t know what goes through his mind.

We get a close-up of Ash reading and when Eiji goes up to him and says hey, Ash reluctantly shifts his eyes to Eiji. What I just realised is that the scene visibly brightens when Eiji approaches Ash. You’d think that the opposite would happen, like Eiji would block the light when he approaches and cast a shadow, thus making the scene darker but nooo… 

“You knew I was here. Don’t pretend you didn’t,” says Eiji cheerfully. Ash immaturely gives him the cold shoulder. Amused, Eiji thinks to himself that Ash’s stubbornly pulling a long face. 

He sits facing Ash and apologises, saying he said too much the night before. They exchange a few words and leave the library.

But in episode 24, we see it from a different perspective. It’s when Eiji is telling Ibe-san about it on the plane. The scene flashes back to the library and we again see Eiji watching Ash reading quietly on his own from afar. 

Eiji looks like he’s just had a revelation and is not quite sure what to do about it. But this time we know what he’s thinking. “He was sitting there quietly. So serene, set apart from the world of violence and fighting,” he says to Ibe-san. “But he was so alone,” he continues. “I can’t even describe how alone he was. It was heart-breaking.”

So Eiji watched Ash for a while before approaching him and that’s when he made up his mind that he “would always believe in Ash no matter what. No matter what happened, [Ash] would have at least one person.”

The camera angle changes and we see Eiji coming up close. Ash notices him and is surprised. Just look at him!

Like he wasn’t expecting Eiji to show up at all after their fight the night before. Eiji sits facing Ash with a smile and Ash just stares at him. 

I bet Ash felt so relieved because he must have thought that Eiji would abandon him after he boldly admitted to those killings (regardless of how he felt about it inside). But Eiji surprised him once again and showed up, being his normal, cheerful self. He’s still there for him. 

That must have meant the world to Ash.

He wasn't supposed to die, but Jar Jar killed him in the editing room. My clown instinct tells me so.

@Centennial_2 on Twitter pointed out how the kiss scene was edited all wrong (the hand placements are inconsistent, reversing Ben's fall shows that Rey is pulling him up, etc.), so I cut it all up and stitched it back together the way it's supposed to be. 🤡
