I think everyone severely underestimates how much iron women need compared to men. Lets put things in context first: beef contains about 1-3mg of iron per 100g/3.5oz, depending on the cut.

men and women are somewhat similar in iron demands up until 14 and then a huge change at 19 onwards. 19 year old+ men need around 8mg of iron a day. so like. a single large, or two small steaks. of course you get iron from things other than beef, and they'll likely get enough on any normal daily diet.

women need 18mg of iron a day and TWENTY SEVEN when pregnant. that's over TWICE the male requirement for your entire life and over three times when pregnant. THATS A LOT?? look at ur own diet for a minute and i promise you, unless ur going crazy on oats and chickpeas or something, you are NOT getting enough iron. probably not even close.

and I'm mind-blown by this because somehow, culturally, meat/red meat seems to be a more stereotypically masculine thing. when eating out, women get a salad and men get a burger or a steak. you google "person eating steak" and vast majority of results are men - when there are women, they've also got a cute little salad on the side, meanwhile men tend to have plates full of meat. (seriously. go google this. it's crazy)

By the way, for anyone wondering, chicken hearts contain about 9mg/100g and don't taste that bad. it just tastes like chicken. i know this sounds so gross but i pan fry around 500g, pop it in the fridge and eat them cold throughout the day, split it across 3-4 days (don't eat past 3 days refrigeration). i promise its not that bad. (they're SO cheap btw. by far cheapest meat on the market, let alone meat with high iron. i get those 500g batches for THREE DOLLARS meanwhile a 200g steak is $15+ and doesn't even cover the iron i need). chicken liver is also really good and cheap but i cant vouch for the taste.

As a feminist, reading old books is sometimes a weird experience. It's not that I'm not prepared to big -sometimes massive- values dissonance, but the willful -at times outright obtuse- blindness authors seemed to have about the world around them is just...baffling.

Take the trope of the "Unhappy old maid", for example. There are tons of books -and tv shows, radio shows, movies, comic books and so on- that describe in-depths the horrors of a life as an unmarried woman past a certain age (what age it is, it mostly depends on the author's opinion). But at the same time, a lot of them also had to confront the sad reality that at least some women were unhappily married, and that husbands could and did make their wives' lives miserable. So they went on to also describe those particular horrors.

And this is where things get strange.

Surely, you may think, being an old maid had to be better than being married to an alcoholic who spent all your money and gave you an STD because he regularly hired sex workers, right? Nobody in the right mind could say otherwise!

Well, it turns out they could. In fact, many old-time novels did exactly that: they proceed to describe how horrible a wife's life could be, usually through no fault of her own, only to turn around and declare that marriage and children was the best thing that could happen to women and they'd better not become old spinsters, the worst fate a woman could have. Like, what?

This is why I don't quite believe that people just "didn't know any better" back then. Many of them willfully chose not to see the obvious reality in front of them and staunchly refused to connect the dots in favor of their own ideology. Or to appease some propaganda.

It's like in the 2000s when many tv shows had a sudden anti abortion message that came completely out of nowhere: many writers abviously knew opposing abortion is wrong and dangerous, but they still put these storylines because this is what was required of them.

Because that's impossible. I'm very much against fast fashion, but as for other items, sometimes I don't have the money to get a 100% ethical alternative. For example, I've ordered a weighted blanket from temu because I couldn't afford a handmade one that was twice as expensive and twice as small. It still hasn't come so I'm not sure how good it actually is, but yeah. There's no ethical consumption under capitalism, and even the phones we all post from were made unethically. Are people okay with some things but not the other? OP is completely right about the clothes, no shade to her, it's more about the liberals that pretend to care about the planet and people, but don't actually follow through with it.

I genuinely do not think you can label yourself as a feminist if you support and indulge in fast fashion. Fast fashion is a concentrated reflection of global systems of exploitation – systems that disproportionately harm women and children. It is an industry deeply rooted in racism and misogyny, where the overwhelming majority of garment workers are young, impoverished women of color in Asian countries, laboring under the control of wealthy Western corporations. These women often face appalling working conditions: low wages, long hours, unsafe environments, and, in many documented cases, sexual harassment and abuse. And while some may argue that they cannot afford more than shein or temu, I have no sympathy for these people, thrifting is available and arguably cheaper.
