Firstprince Sticky Notes

I had the headcanon last night that Alex leaves and hides sticky notes all over their home. It starts when Henry is going through a depressive episode. Alex “breaks into” the brownstone. (He has a key. He just shows up uninvited and when Henry is sleeping or has managed to drag himself to work.) He puts sticky notes all over the brownstone with things that he loves about Henry, many of them come off the Incomplete List. After he sees how much Henry loves them, it becomes a thing. He starts putting the date on when he wrote the note. (Though they have a playful argument over the correct way to write the date.) He starts not only does he just stick the notes places like countertops and cabinets, he also hides them. He’ll stick one in the bottom of Henry’s sock drawer, under his laptop, inside his favorite mug, in the book Henry’s reading, in the pocket of his coat, etc. Alex takes it as a challenge to hide them as well as he can. He hides one so well that Henry doesn’t find it until they’re moving out of the brownstone. It’s dated as late Fall 2022. (As in, it’s been hidden for over three years.) It says something like “I love waking up next to you every morning. I want to do it for the rest of my life.”

Early on, they're pretty basic and just include things from the incomplete list or just say “I love you”. Over time, they become more elaborate. Some of the notes are quotes from historical love letters, like they had put in their emails. Some have song lyrics. Some have inside jokes. Some have reminders of things they’ve done together (spicy and not spicy). Some have puns Alex tries to make. The first time he stuck to Henry's favorite mug just has the description of how Henry likes his tea (how long he brews it, what he puts in his tea and how much, etc)

The notes also become color coded. 

Red is spicy things. 

Light yellow is things directly from the Incomplete List. 

Light blue is observations, like the tea or noting which sweater is Henry's favorite.

Hot pink is David related. 

Light pink is future pets. 

Purple/lavender is future child(ren)/fatherhood related. 

White is boring adulting (like reminders of appointments).

Novelty sticky notes (like taco shaped sticky notes) are mostly just “I love you” notes (written in glitter gel pen when Alex is feeling particularly extra). 

Of course, Henry eventually gets in on leaving sticky notes for Alex.* His are written on mint green sticky notes. (The date is written on those ones too.)

Me too, he thought, but that doesn't mean he wants to be. Alex's notes had made it clear that he would be interested in hooking up again. But he still wasn't sure if he was interested in more than that. They still hadn't actually kissed for Christ's sake. And there was still his daughter to consider in all of this. Two more weeks of school, he reminded himself as he took his daughter by the hand to walk to their bus stop

The store in front of Henry’s bookstore has stood vacant for as long as Henry can remember. Recently, however, it sprang to life as a charming flower shop owned by one Alex Claremont-Diaz. While this could be seen as a very unimportant event, it actually created a seismic shift in Henry’s life for the following reasons :

Reason nr 1: Alex Claremont-Diaz is the most beautiful man Henry has ever seen in his life. Reason nr 2: Despite his reputation as an eloquent and articulate individual—boasting an Oxford degree in English literature, a self-published anthology of poetry, and a collection of popular fanfictions on AO3—Henry's usual verbal prowess abandons him in Alex's presence, reducing him to a flustered, stammering mess. Reason nr 3: In a gesture of neighborly goodwill, Alex recently paid Henry a visit, introducing himself and presenting an impressively large bouquet. Reason nr 4: Unbeknownst to Alex, Henry has a severe flower allergy. Reason nr 5: Alex is the most beautiful man…oh wait, no, he already mentioned that. (It bears repeating, though.)

I was pretty sure I’m over thinking this, but then Taylor talked on that podcast about how they took such care with the lines and how to say them and how saying them differently might make them mean something else, and now… well, I still think I’m over thinking it but I feel slightly less delulu about it.

I’ve always wondered about how Nick delivered the line about wanting Alex but not wanting that life (as a politician’s spouse), because it always sounds strange to me that he stressed the word ‘want’ while my instinct tells me the natural emphasis should have been on ‘that’ (and possibly life).

“… and still not want that life.” vs.

“… and still not want that life.”

Because the last couple of sentences have been about just that, about how being with Alex, who wants the life in the spotlight if it means fulfilling his political ambitions, would force Henry there as well, just like he’s being forced there by the Crown. It would be ‘trading one prison for another’. So that’s what you’d think that line should be about.

Instead Nick decided to emphasise ‘want’. And it makes sense in the bigger context of his whole speech, because it isn’t about the details of what Henry does or doesn’t want. It’s about the wanting and not wanting itself. Realistically Henry will never not have ‘that life’. Even if eh breaks up with Alex, even if he abdicates he is still the son of a famous actor and the future Queen of England; he will never be ‘an anonymous person in the world’, not really. But that is not the point. The point is that Henry wants. Specifically he wants things he cannot have: anonymity, freedom, Alex. The ability to choose his own destiny. Which also includes not wanting things. And his speech asserts that he is ‘allowed’ not want and not want things

Henry doesn’t have a choice in the matter of whether he gets the things he wants, he knows he won’t. But he can choose to not have them. Breaking up with Alex then hurts but it is his choice. His infinitesimal shred of self preservation and self determination. He gets a tiny bit of what he wants, the freedom to choose, even if it is just to get what he doesn’t want.
