I actually have a LOT of numbness from surgeries as well as the opposite excruciating nerve damage lol (my nerves are *fragile*) so here’s my thoughts, advice, descriptions, and more! Yay!
So numbness!
Is actually much more complex than just *numb* which is actually super fascinating. At least for me, there are the classic dead spots where I feel nothing, but this numbness also has thicknesses. I had a knee reconstruction about ten years ago now, which caused some nerve damage from my knee down to my ankle, mostly just on the front side of the leg/shin area. I’m just numb in the skin on those areas but I can feel pressure and vibrations both in the muscles and surrounding areas. So a touch to those areas isn’t totally unfelt, but it’s very unclear? I know there’s *something* touching me but I can’t feel temperature, texture, pain, etc. I do cut myself shaving quite frequently there because of it, oops! but otherwise it does not affect my quality of life in the slightest.
Surrounding the numb areas are my *confused* areas lol. So nerves can actually heal but very slowly and not always correctly, so in areas were I have some returned sensation there are mixed signals. For example, if you were to run your hand down my shin I feel an intensely ticklish sensation in one spot of my ankle. The sensation of my knee is felt on my outer lower leg area, and it’s more of a vague tingling, which is odd because my outer leg area when it’s *actually* touched has no sensation. I say again, the *confused* areas. For my leg this confused sensation isn’t painful, neither is the numbness.
Let’s move onto my hip and shoulder! Aka, hell.
So post-shoulder surgery my entire arm went blissfully numb for about four hours. Full and totally numb. Was hitting my arm on things and had no idea. Also! For the skin-depth numbness of my lower leg, having just skin numbness doesn’t affect the function or my ability to know where in space my leg is, the total arm numbness DID. Anywho, when the sensation was returning it came back in the form of fire from hell in every nerve ending in my entire arm. Sensation in-general returned from the top of my arm and moved down my arm until the whole thing was burning. It was so extreme that I was in the ER hours after surgery and was admitted almost within an hour so they could get me on IV pain meds, sedation, etc. Nerve pain is some of the worst imaginable pain that can be felt. Thankfully it did slowly resolve over about three days and my arm is back to normal! Yay! No numbness or any issues since.
My hip is an odd mix of both problems but was not caused by surgery! Very curious, indeed! I sustained a very deep blunt trauma to the area which left a very large bruise and the skin totally numb at first. After a few days of healing that burning nerve pain sort of came in *stripes* across the area, as opposed to the diffuse pain from the arm. I had one particular *stripe* that wrapped from my hip all the way around my torso. The main area that sustained the trauma remained numb though. To this day there is numbness, confused bits, and the occasional burning pain I assume from slow healing as the injury was fairly recent.
Anyway, thanks for letting me overshare again, hope this helps the writers out there!
Healed Scars in Whump: A Tip (Whump & Disability: Part 2)
a friendly reminder that surgery scars, even ones that are healed and years old, are felt anytime you stretch that part of your body.
have scars on your chest or back? you feel them when you reach up to turn the light off before bed. scars on your knees? you feel them anytime you bend your leg too far.
it doesn't hurt, at least not in my case, (it feels somewhat like if you put a finger inside your mouth and pull the skin of your cheek out - a gentle pull, but no pain) but i've never seen this detail written into whump or recovery fics and when i do, it always adds so much more realism into the story.
in some cases (and here, i'm speaking solely in relation to scars on your chest, since that's what i know from experience) the healed scars will be so sensitive to external stimuli that even wearing clothes is tortorous. alternatively, the whumpee could loose all sensation in the area. i was given about a 10% possibility that one of those might happen to me, and thankfully I avoided it but they'd both be interesting to see written into whump fics, especially recovery ones.

Little whump detail that I love: at the beginning of a torture session when Whumpee is first chained or tied up, you see them wrap their hands around to hold the length of the rope or chain.
But afterwards when they’ve been through hours and hours of agony, you see their hands now listlessly hanging in their shackles. Bearing Whumpee’s weight, limp and weak.
It shows a Whumpee entering the ordeal being in control or defiant, but ending up losing all of that and having broken their composure. So much so that they don’t have the ability or the strength to posture anymore.

This is literally what getting a feeding tube placed/removed/lived with feels like… (cue my mild medical ptsd lol)
Bonus round for you: door handles, the dog, a chair, everything will find a way to yank that, whumper has no need to even do it himself. A little change you could make is making the weight/chain surgical. You can actually place them wide awake and while that hurts like a bitch it definitely won’t kill you, you’d heal in a week or less. Yanking on a tube/chain directly through your abdomen is gonna feel 10x worse.
woke up from a Very Vivid dream this morning
Just
Whumpee being manipulated/coerced/forced into swallowing a sizable metal weight on the end of the chain. The chain isn't big, just strong enough not to snap. The weight is as big as possible without being so big it's unswallowable.
So they swallow the weight, maybe because they are threatened, promised something in exchange, or by having it shoved down their throat. And as the metal lump settles in their stomach, so heavy they can feel it, and they are curled in on themself gasping to breath around the chain coming from their throat, and fighting their gag reflex, Whumper leans down casually, almost gently, and take the chain in their hand then use it to yank Whumpee to attention. Whumper uses this chain as a leash directly from down Whumpee's throat. They lead Whumpee around like this, showing them off, humiliating them, and simultaneously giving them excruciating internal injuries.
What kind of things does Whumper demand before they're willing to pull the weight back out? Or maybe the swelling gets bad enough it has to be surgically removed?
It's just, one of the most messed up things my asleep brain has ever conjured and I will be daydreaming about it for weeks.

Military whump prompts
(because Reddit is down and I’m chronically online)
Hearing the whumpee’s screams over the radio as they’re captured, the rest of the team frozen in horror.
• Patch job in the middle of the battlefield, someone pressing down on a wound with their bare hands, whispering, “Stay with me, okay? Just stay.”
• Post-mission debrief, but the whumpee is barely holding it together, swaying on their feet as the adrenaline wears off.
• The whumpee refusing pain meds because they need to “stay sharp,” only to pass out mid-conversation.
• “I don’t leave people behind,” they growl, limping and bleeding but refusing to abandon the unconscious teammate over their shoulder.
• Waking up in a field hospital, disoriented and panicked, pulling out the IV before being restrained by a firm but gentle voice.
• “We’re not going to make it.” “Yes, we are.” Cue one of them doing something reckless to ensure the other gets out alive.
• Cold, soaked to the bone, huddled in a ruined building during a downpour, one of them feverish while the other desperately tries to keep them awake.
• Hiding an injury to avoid being benched, only for it to get worse at the worst possible moment.
• “You don’t understand—I can’t go back. I can’t be discharged.”
• A high-ranking officer demanding a mission debrief while the whumpee is barely conscious, words slurring, bleeding through their uniform.
• A medic struggling to save the whumpee in the back of a jolting vehicle, yelling for the driver to go faster.
• Post-rescue, sitting by the whumpee’s bedside, counting every beep of the heart monitor like a prayer.

you know what whump trope I love?
the same dialogue being used for both whumper and caretaker, but in very different contexts!
“This’ll hurt,” (Before being tortured / before taking off a Bandaid)
“Don’t move.” (While whumper restrains them / while caretaker brushes their hair)
“Quiet down.” (Whumper yelling at sobbing whumpee / caretaker gently shushing excited whumpee)
“They’re not coming for you.” (Whumper telling them no one will save them / Caretaker telling them no one will kidnap them)
“I’m only trying to help.” (Whumper pretending to take care of them / Caretaker actually taking care of them)
“You’ll never see them again.” (Whumper mocking them / Caretaker reassuring them)

Tropes that always give me whumperflies
Content: noncon nudity, manhandling, injuries, beating, fear, defiant/stoic whumpee
Throwing whumpee onto their knees before the enemy leader and holding them there by the back of the neck
Whumpee half-curled into a fetal position as they're being relentlessly kicked
Whumpee forced to strip. And doing so flushing and getting ashamed.
Whumpee shuddering and shaking from exhaustion caused by screaming, resisting, and fear
Wiping blood off hastily, grabbing injuries, making faces as they try not to cry
Ripping their pants down or shirt up so roughly it jerks whumpee's body
The broken sob that's kind of the end of a cry they barely managed to hold in
Whumpee feeling stupid, humiliated, even though anyone would, in their position
Sweating, swallowing, and keeping their face under control, trembling as they are inspected
Being twisted by the wrist, spun around, and slammed face-first into a wall or desk
Compromising positions like whumper sitting on their butt, in a non-sexual, violent way that just emphasizes the desperate physical struggle.
Grabbing them by the face to look at them and make snide observations about how scared they are
Slapping whumpee in the cheek
Small whumpees being thrown around and restrained physically by big whumpers
Grabbing their hair to slam them into the wall and whispering something in their ear that makes whumpee grimace
"turn around and face the wall."
Slapping a knife wound or gunshot injury and whumpee winces, cries and curls over the injury
A sarcastic remark dying on whumpee's lips as they see what whumper brought to beat them with
A stoic whumpee after a long time of taking a beating with only grunts of pain, groaning as a bone is broken, and as whumper raises their boot to kick again, whumpee hoarsely cries "wait wait, please! --please wait!"
