my wbn hot take, i dont think Nif should have an official witch station. because that only comes with being part of the coven of elders, and being a Great Witch (or one's apprentice). there are many many witches who are just witches. and i love to think of Nif becoming a village witch and having a community that adores her. if Nif ever becomes a truly great witch worthy of the coven, it's a long ways away. she can learn some from Ame, but Ame herself is still just coming into her own as a witch!

i understand the urge to think of her character development in terms of titles, though. especially considering all the other witches we've met so far have them. because a number a color everything part of a set put it in a box the box has lines every line is the same

thinking about suvi’s scene with slate and the threats of violence, the explicit desire of violence towards her, and how suvi has to use her mothers care for her as a shield from that but also how slate is an arm of steels like how the citadel is an arm of the empire.

like oh no steel wouldn’t threaten violence as a response to disobedience look your hugging, she’s crying! she’s gonna fix everything and talk it out!

and then she she sends slate her personal soldier to collect all of suvis most precious possessions, but it’s not steel threading that violence noooo steel wouldn’t, didn’t you see her crying?

the way this show works with negative space and the time jump makes me genuinely want to crawl around on the walls.

The structure of the citadel as a school is so deeply bad and we don’t get to see any of it it’s all hints and pieces and the echo of how it changed suvi. and i’m never going to be normal about it actually.

I wrote it out but the emotion in her voice is not done justice.

“I haven’t forgotten anything. I started off not knowing anything. You were there the last time I saw my parents. I didn’t know I was a Newel until a month ago. I was raised in your home under the best of intentions. And do you think for one minute they didn’t take me from my home, but I had not other home if I’d failed one fucking test. I would have walked off of Malacanth at noon before living with the shame of failing the great potential of my parents, you included. So I know a little something about fucking pressure.”

like just the richness and depth of these characters every episode. i’m deeply biased but i genuinely think what’s being done here with characters and storytelling is so revolutionary and beautiful.

listen worlds beyond number needs to stop being so cool and beautiful. Sometimes I forget the level of detail and layers of story there are, and then I re listen to an episode and get absolutely punched in the face by a random line.

The Wizard, The Witch, and The Wild One & Exploring Ethics* Through D&D

There are six ability scores in Dungeons and Dragons:

Strength (STR)

Dexterity (DEX)

Constitution (CON)

Intelligence (INT)

Wisdom (WIS)

Charisma (CHA)

The first three are abilities of the body and the last three are of the mind. Ethics is inherently of the mind.

The Wizard, The Witch, and The Wild One explores ethics by emphasizing these three abilities, their archetypes, and through their characterization.

Suvi, the Wizard (INT caster): explores ethics through intelligence and reason.

Ame, the Witch (WIS caster): explores ethics through insight and perception.

Eursulon the Wild One and knight (CHA caster): explores ethics through honor and performance.

This is probably stating the obvious for most listeners, but I wanted to express this succinctly, for myself and others, especially given a lot of discussion that implies a false binary of choice. There is never only two options.

​And the World, both Real and Spirit, needs the Intelligence of the Wizard, as much as it needs the Wisdom of the Witch, as much as it needs the Honor of the Wild One.

It's why I love this podcast and this story. And I can't wait to see what other stories they tell. Thanks, @worldsbeyondpod for ALL that y'all do. It's a bright light in the dark. 🕯️🧡
