I was originally a dancer for the first 16 years of my life. I fell in love with yoga because it has many similar elements. I love the stretching and strengthening. One thing yoga does that dance does not, is release stress. I have found that every time I leave a yoga class I am more refreshed and relaxed. It is always something I look forward to in my day as a mental reset.

Yoga’s Purpose
The Indians who developed yoga originally intended to promote healing by tuning the body and the spirit into the same frequency. When doing yoga, the goal is to focus on breathing and the body. It provides a chance to separate oneself from the daily stresses of life.  A high amount of physical aliments are triggered by stress. The purpose of yoga is to take our eyes off of stress to create a more balanced, healthy life. Jared Farmer and other experts have found that practicing yoga has proved to evoke a relaxation response in the practitioner. Yoga brings about relaxation, but it also provides fitness benefits. Yoga improves flexibility and strength. Certain poses have also been shown to help with digestion.

Flexibility – The range of motion that one’s body can master. Flexibility can come from genetics or careful and intentional practice. Before stretching to improve flexibility, it is important to make sure the muscles are warm so that they are not damaged in the process.
Synonym: limberness
Stress – The emotional discomfort felt by worry of future things. Stress in a common battle that humans face, but is more prominent in certain people. Stress is seen more so often in those who suffer from anxiety.

Here is an example of Downward Dog pose, ft. a cat. Down Dog is great for stretching claves and hamstrings, while strengthening arm muscles.

Day Two: Favorite
There are so many lovely poses out there, and I had a seriously hard time picking my favorite. I chose Downward Facing Dog because it’s my “home base”.

Plow Pose, aka Halasana, is a relaxing spine lengthener that also opens the chest and shoulders. Plow is fantastic for the thyroid as well, and opens the calves with toes tucked, or the shins with toes untucked. Experience this heavenly pose for yourself in any or all of my classes over the next few days listed below. My History With Yoga
I took my first yoga class at the age of sixteen. My junior year of high school, I was enrolled in a year long class of yoga. I learned several poses and flows, along with new vocabulary and the art of meditation. My senior year, I regularly attended yoga classes at 24 Hour Fitness and I spent the summer leading practice at a summer camp.
