me recommending black sails to people but not wanting them to think the show is gimmicky: technically it's a prequel to treasure island, but that's not important.
me, internally: black sails reinvented the concept of a prequel by slowly but surely leading up to a series finale that invests the original work with more depth and meaning than it actually deserves, and by calling into question things that are considered canon in treasure island. and you don't even realize how closely the two texts are connected until deep into the fourth season, when it suddenly becomes clear--skeleton island looms out of the fog like an omen, tying the events of the show to a future that's masterfully hinted at but never explicitly acknowledged.
