Honestly, I think the whole “don’t pay the writers” thing boils down to the notion that everybody thinks they can write. It’s the old saw about the novelist at a cocktail party having to hear someone say, for the millionth time, “I’d love to write a book someday.”
Someone–Stephen King? Pretty sure I saw this in a Stephen King foreword–once said they’d like to say to a brain surgeon, “Boy, I’d love to do brain surgery someday.”
We treat “the ability to put words into a sentence” like it’s just the same as “the ability to form a coherent narrative that engenders a variety of emotions within the reader and puts them in a scene and shows them what they didn’t see before”.
And that’s like me drawing a stick figure and saying I’m an artist.
Writers are constantly devalued because everyone thinks they have a book in them and don’t realize the level of skill and commitment it takes to finish even a short story, much less a whole book.
This goes well beyond fandom, but man, I would’ve hoped fandom would know better.

I have a friend, we’ll call him O, whom I’ve known for five years.
We were in a band together, which is how we met, but the band’s gone now and, you know, the friendship’s still going. This is the person who made sure I had a proper 21st birthday with friends, or started conversations about philosophy and life and our two very different life experiences while one of us was driving the other home from practice.
I’m drawn to recount the time I was having a horrible flare-up of OCD while out with friends. Terrible, cannot-move-my-body OCD, told two friends including O, one friend redirected the other and casually found something for the two of them to do, O got into the passenger seat of my car.
Usually I don’t want to be interacted with when I’m having a bad OCD time—or if did I want interactions, at that time, they would all be online, me texting for reassurance and asking for very specific responses. This is the only time I’ve been okay with an intervention like this. Because he didn’t push for too many answers, and he got it. We sat together, he wouldn’t be brushed off unless I actually needed him to go, and I didn’t, so he stayed, if I recall correctly. The rest of the night was fun and we got up and got moving. I had never asked him for anything like that before, and he had never asked me. We started talking a lot more about life and such sometime after that.
So anyway, that’s O. I wanted to say something about him? Something that doesn’t spill anything too personal to him, but that gets across the kind of friendship I’m talking about?
O has had a fundraiser post on this site (made by me) since September, and it only has, as of right now on 12/15/2020, 253 notes total. Here is the post. He is currently working a full-time job, but contracted COVID-19, and spent five weeks off work without pay, before going back to work. His landlord is demanding ¼ of the past-due rent by March.
We’ve raised a little under a third of what he needs by March, and he’s starting to get really worried about it—which is fair. We basically need to raise double that amount in the same amount of time. To do that, I’m trying to get that fundraiser post, or this one, up to 1,000 notes.
It’s not about how much you can push yourself to give. It’s definitely not about how much we can pressure other people who are struggling themselves to give money they’re not sure they can spare. Here’s the thing about fundraisers:
It’s about eyes. It’s about us working together so that this fundraiser post reaches the eyes of people who are able to chip in $5 or $10 or $60, what have you, without that wobbling their own security. And it works to reach more eyes!
This post is probably a good one to reblog too, so here is a link to O’s GoFundMe! It has raised 1,075 USD as I write this, but the updated number is available on the GoFundMe or at this Tumblr post.
If you want to contribute but don’t want to go through GoFundMe, you’re welcome to give through Ko-Fi! I’m new to Ko-Fi, but I believe it publicly documents how much has been given, which will be good for accountability. Feel free to leave a note about how the tip is for O, but until we meet the March goal, all tips sent to my Ko-Fi will be sent to O and documented on the GoFundMe and Tumblr posts.
I haven’t raised any Ko-Fi funds yet, but if I do, I’ll note them immediately on both the GoFundMe page and the Tumblr post!
Thanks for reading. It’s about reaching enough eyes and finding the people who are looking for a place to send some money to help, or who have enough to spare. I cannot express enough what an amazing Christmas present it would be to me, and general sense of hope for the future for O, if we could get this post and/or the original to a thousand notes.

Local Bookstores Have A New Weapon In The Fight With Amazon
Tumblr media
In the book industry, Amazon is Goliath, the giant who overshadows everyone else. But there’s a new David on the scene, Bookshop.org.
It doesn’t expect to topple the giant, but it has launched a weapon that could make Amazon’s shadow a little smaller, and help local bookstores fight back.
Bookshop.org, a website that went live at the end of January and is still in beta mode, is designed to be an alternative to Amazon, and to generate income for independent bookstores. And, perhaps more importantly, it seeks to give book reviewers, bloggers and publications who rely on affiliate income from “Buy now” links to Amazon a different option.
Profit from books sold through Bookshop will be split three ways, with 10% of the sale price going into a pool that will be divided among participating bookstores, 10% going to the publication that triggered the sale by linking to Bookshop.org, and 10% going to Bookshop.org to support its operations.

for all of you guys that are writing fantasy and getting into fantasy cartography, i highly, highly recommend that you sit through artifexian’s youtube series on building realistic fantasy maps
he basically breaks down stuff like how to realistically place climate zones on a map, what they look like, how ocean currents work, how they affect things (like where your world’s fishing hubs and climates are going to be placed), where mountain ranges should go and how they affect climate, where your world’s metals (i.e. resource wealth) are going to be found, and on and on and on. it’s SUPER incredibly fucking helpful and really fleshes your world out in a whole new way
