A distillation of my soul. Am I driven by wine, spirits, caffeine? Or none of the above? This was a scan of a recent #cappuccino that I ordered @enough_sf. The #caffeine drink was excellent of course—there is a @peetscoffee next door and a new @starbucks across of the street but I often come here for the #conversation with Kris who is pretty cool and a very individualist person. I have many #barista friends in #sanfrancisco and now in #oakland. I kinda identify with them because of their artistry and their intensity. As a writer and photographer, I find myself reaching into the spaces that go the deepest part of my soul. In the recent year (in my search to get to the bottom of my reality), I have become lost in #fictional #novels—to the point that I am seriously relating to the tragic #storylines of the main characters. You may be asking: Why did I scan my cappuccino instead of shooting it with my camera. This black and white cuts to the inner core, and that is where my best creations often begin. There is no color enhancement to cloud the issue. BTW, the drink was delicious. Clarity was achieved. How do I begin my day? Each morning my darling Alice (@aliwongsf), our gal Kaili 🐶 and I walk several blocks to the 29 Sunset #sfmuni bus stop. It is always a good walk as the three of us talk a little about the day before us. When I arrive at the stop, I have several options—as most #sanfranciscans know all lines lead inbound and endup somewhere around #sffidi. Today, I took the J Church #metro. Once I got on the metro, I dove right into a book. Currently I am half way through #anythingconsidered by #petermayle. While this is a piece of fiction, parts of it could easily have been my biography. Now I am at my desk and having black #coffee, fresh #oranges, and yesterday’s leftover grilled #chicken, and just noting to my colleagues a couple of passages I found interesting during today’s commute. This is how I like to begin my day—in a thoughful, pondering mode. Now onto writing about wines that my palate really got into recently. Moments of solitude. When my colleagues poured me a glass of Lanson Brut recently my thoughts left the room—though it was only momentarily, it happened—when I returned to the company at hand, it was as if I had never left. What happened? With the removal of the cork, release of the wine, and pour into a flute, my mind climbed into a place where I was recalling all of the decades that I had tasted, analyzed, and savored this #champagne. I have long history with the #lansonblacklabel and my professional training sent me back in time to fetch, recall, and add this moment to our history. This always happens when wines are placed in front of me. Fortunately few people ever notice because that moment is always so quick but just enough for me to add to my #winetasting notes. If you ever pour wine for me, don’t look to see if I have escaped into another world because I have, and I always return before anyone ever notices. Uncertainty It is late one evening. I am with friends and colleagues. By all accounts, everything is good. We had just flown from the California to Florida. Five, maybe six hours on the plane, and now we are in a desolate hotel bar. I am nursing a gin and tonic. I don’t remember what my pals were drinking; they seemed content. I just remember it being a somber moment. Tomorrow would be a heavy workday. Tonight was just meant to be quiet. We all knew uncertainty was in the air, but for now it was okay. It seems we have all been here before. We just work, work, work, and then it is over. This is the nature of life. We are born full of promises, work 40 years, stop, and then we are gone. No tears, just occupying time and space, are there any lessons? Don’t let the days go by you, grab each moment as if it was your last. Life has no guarantees. Turk Street: A slice of San Francisco. The street begins---or ends (depending on your outlook on life) at Market Street between 5th and 6th and concludes at Arguello where it kind of turns into Balboa and quietly runs into the ocean. At Market Street one can experience the whole of humanity---the good, bad, snd ugly. The smell of pot, urine, feces are now interwoven with tech people, down and out folks, druggies. Junk food operate next to upscale wine bars, burger, and cool coffee spots. A few blocks away are some of the tastiest Vietnamese eateries and other pretty cool ethnic foods.
