sweet, sweet angel :c the hair is pretty decent, nothing flashy (of course), just your typical 15-year-old-boy haircut

season 1, blue mohawk - 10/10

in retrospect, this is an insane move to pull but damn was it worth it, his confidence practically skyrocketed and i love that for him

seasons 2&3, red spikes - 7/10

babygirl was going through it, but damn if he didn't look good. idk if it's just me but the mohawk's base feels a bit too thick, or maybe i'm just being nitpicky

season 4, purple - 8.5/10

rip purple mohawk, gone too soon. jokes aside i really liked this colour, but as a pink&purple girly there's no surprise there.

season 4, buzzcut - 7.5/10

might be controversial, but i kinda liked the buzzed hair. jacob is a very good looking guy and it was something eli had to go through in order to grow

season 5, brown - 8/10

liked it a lot, not as interesting as some of the colourful ones but still pretty good

season 5, green - 6/10

it's a good thing to try new things and an even better thing to recognise when they don't work, the green didn't really click with me but it gets an extra point for the self realisation

season 6, blue spikes - 11/10

love the blue, love the spikes, love the vibe, no notes

season 6, usa flag - -43/10

immediately no. this is the most american thing anyone has ever done. idk if it's bc i'm not american that this is appalling, but i'm pretty sure if someone had done the same thing with the greek flag i'd find it just as obnoxious and distasteful

season 6, green/turquoise ombre - 20/10

i love love love the colours, it's so unique and well-styled, i love everything about it, zero complaints

yeah i rewatched cobra kai and feeling inspired, what about it

season 1 - 4.5/10

omg a babyyyy. as much as i love s1 miguel his hair was too short and too messy (especially in earlier episodes), kinda like they didn't know what to do with it

season 2 - 6.5/10

fluffyyyy, and swooshy, i really like the length, although the sides could be shorter. not a fan of his straight hair era, but still pretty good

season 3 - 6/10

pretty much the same as s2, except the hair doesn't look as floofy and i'm super ready for the curls to make their appearance

season 4 - 5.5/10

we're FINALLY getting some wavy action!! unfortunately it's not done justice and i don't particularly care for the side swoops(?), but hey it's a start

season 5 - 10/10

back at it again with the cobra kai posts nobody asked for

season 1 - 4/10

not great, but not terrible, the waves are so cute, though i'm not really feeling the side part

season 2 - 5/10

a bit more naturally curly, and she also had a few hairstyles that looked really good, but i still don't like the side part

season 3 - 5.5/10

mary had just started her curly hair journey, so it's a bit messy, and the highlights are putting me off, but again, some beautiful hairstyles and her hair has a lot more volume

season 4 - 1000/10

her best hair era and i'll die on this hill. look at that volume, that definition, the colour, not to mention her styling, she really popped off this season.

of course i would be remiss if i didn't mention my favorite look:

i love absolutely everything about this look, the hair, the fit, the makeup, the earrings, the attitude, everything

season 5 - 9.5/10

i loooove her waves and the length and the slightly darker hue this season, the only reason it's not a ten is that it sometimes looks a tiny bit flat

season 6, pt1 - 7/10

her hair this season is a bit too short for my liking and i think they leaned too much into the hair gel, but i still love the curl definition and different hairstyles

season 6, pt2 - 8/10

similarly to pt1, i'm not too crazy about the length, but the hair definitely looks more voluminous and i just adore her fighting braids

season 6, pt3 - 7.5/10

again, i don't love the length but her curls are so well defined and bouncy and full. unfortunately this season was kinda monotonous styling-wise

Writing YA books about Faes/Faeries: Holly Black and Sarah J. Maas

I’ve started to notice this trend and discussions on how some hardcore SJM fans didn't enjoy The Cruel Prince, whereas the Cruel Prince fans tend to be critical of SJM’s work.

Some of it can be blamed on tiktokification of reading, essentially wanting to just read porn, which would be fine, if people would admit to it instead of shitting on good YA books and making them unpopular, which results in publishing of more mediocre smut with problematic undertones with no consistent plot, which in turn dumbs down the audience. There's no need to turn an entire age category of books into Wattpad fanfics.

I’ve seen ACOTAR fans on tiktok (before I deleted tiktok) say they “didn’t get” Cruel Prince or had to DNF because it was “boring” and "too much politics, no smut”. I had heard all of that before I read either Holly Black's or SJM's work so here's an objective take because I'm not a hardcore fan of either of them.

If you think The Cruel Prince has a lot of politics, you have been tiktokified or don't remember a book that wasn't romance or YA to begin with, so please go read one. It's good for you to broaden your horizons. It doesn't have a lot of politics even for YA. But I will say this: the pacing was slow and the romance was practically nonexistent. You'll have to really look into details and speculate. I wasn't digging it at first at all. I had to come back and reread it again after finishing the trilogy. I fell in love with Jude x Cardan only during the second reread. The Cruel Prince trilogy is not for smut seekers.

However, what some fans don't realize is that unlike SJM, Holly Black doesn't excuse Cardan's or Jude's actions to make them look like great people and leaders or forces the narrative and other characters' pov's to do that. Holly actually writes Fae as what they're supposed to be - actual different creatures from humans with different ways of thinking and feeling. I read somewhere that humans have black vs white morality they navigate, while the fair folk have orange vs blue morality. It's not the same for them, and yet, ones who are actually evil are easily distinguishable. Holly manages to pull that off beautifully. The writing in that regard is masterful. I would also say that Jude and Taryn have adapted to and adopted orange vs blue morality in their own ways. Which translates in them seeking security in the world that's not designed for them, as well as their ambitions.

SJM, on the other hand, writes Fae as way too powerful, constantly horny, conventionally hot people. There is no orange vs blue or even grey morality, they're just selfish people with victim complexes. Their backstories serve as an excuse, not as an explanation. Everyone yaps about how powerful they are but always need their asses saved. PTSD is written unrealistically and the author only whips it out when she needs it. Characters' grand gestures of growth feel shallow since they always go back on their words or ignore the actual root of problems. Faerie folklore is not properly explored, random mythology is tossed in, plot bends backwards to make the perfect ending for protagonists...I would call it porn with plot except the smut isn't even good.

SJM also can't write politics, so instead she feeds her readers propaganda so they won't question the rulers' incompetence and incapacity to make a change in centuries. The whole thing feels like a parody of making fun of filthy rich people. It would be at least somewhat clever if it was.

Lastly, a shout-out to Margaret Rogerson for writing the best and loveliest way I've seen about what it's like to give up humanity to become Fae and grapple with remaining humane in her book An Enchantment of Ravens. Fair warning though, the book is pure fluff, no smut.
