WINNER + The 80′s & why I think it matters.
After Taehyun’s new Instagram post with the caption ‘80’ it got me thinking more about the concept of this comeback. (Note that this is my personal observation so I may be completely off and just blabbering on) After today’s comeback stages I noticed that 80′s fashion is a very important inspiration used by their stylist. (after working in film & wardrobe you learn how important the wardrobe chosen by the stylist is) First let’s start with the outfits used for ‘Baby Baby’; They are completely 80′s inspired: (with a modern twist of course) -Pushed up sleeves -Casual shirts/t-shits under designer jackets (shoulder pads)
After seeing this stage and their outfits I thought of DURAN DURAN (colorful jackets, simple shirts, the pants)
Then I looked at the stage for IMMATURE, the same outfits were used for the filming of the teasers and the album jacket in London. Self explanatory, 80′s punk/grunge fashion inspired outfits, paying tribute to all the great punk and rock and alternative bands of that time.

The Sex Pistols, The clash, Nirvana..so many references of these bands in WINNER’s fashion: MINO’s long coat, Yoon’s lock chain necklace, JINWOO’s sheer shirt, Taehyun’s hair, Hoon’s suspenders, the leather jackets, the shoes it’s all so obvious and we all caught up on it the first time we saw the teaser. Then we move on to the outfits for ‘SENTIMENTAL’
Although it seems simple, the tiny influences are there like Tae’s acid washed jean jacket, converse shoes… Mino was definitely representing 80′s Hip Hop fashion with the gold chain, ring and oversized colorful sweater. One thing that really got my attention was Jinwoo’s ‘Champion’ sweatshirt (displaying brand logos was very important in the 80s & ‘Champion’ was an extremely popular brand at that time). (cr for the picture: @PeachTea0926 )

This also made me think of the MV + other 80′s trends: like men wearing high-heeled boots, Jinwoo was seen wearing high heeled boots in the MV. As a person who’s worked in wardrobe the stylist doesn’t style based on an image they create alone it’s based on the whole concept the artist is going for. That’s why I think the 80′s is a theme that’s very important to WINNER, seeing how much effort the stylist has put in even the smallest items. It also shows in the teasers that have references with so many artists of that time. What’s the big deal with the 80′s? The 80′s was a very important time in music, with the new wave music , hip hop and other genres…there were so many important moments that changed music history and shaped music to this day. And not only in music but in fashion as well till this day, I mean look at YSL who had a totally 80′s inspired line not too long ago. Plus a lot of films showing the rebellious and troubled youth also came out at that time. I believe that this translates into WINNER being the new wave in KPOP, no other group has challenged themselves musically like them recently & they surely do not sound like anyone but themselves. Their music is a genre of it’s own, definitely a new wave for KPOP, an EXIT from all the same old music. It’s a MOVEMENT.
