Utopia Avenue by David Mitchell, review

5.5/10 I picked up this book while searching around the bookshop and seemed intrigued by it's cover, reading the summary and the first few pages, it quickly drives me in to become interested despite having no knowledge of David Mitchell nor his prior works. A band emerging from the United Kingdom and having the goal to reign over the United States during the late 60s? It seemed as if it was peak literature in the modern times.
I have to admit most of my enjoyment comes from the first half the book which showcases the beginnings of the band, actually that's where most of my compliments lay in. Characters such as Dean and Elf are shown to very three-dimensional in their issues, alongside the introduction to guitarist Jasper and drummer Griff. Reading them bond cause of their manager, Levon, grouping them together made me appreciate to seeing the band gaining popularity. Likeable characters automatically proceeds with a reader's enjoyment. Another delight is the emphasising of Jasper's condition, issuing it as an actual problem throughout the book and digging deeper into his character without forgetting to mention how his passion in music influences his personality and, I'll mention chapter 472-473 later, but the writing helps in constructing the hallucinations he experiences which could leave the reader in utter confusion. Making it so they feel as if they were in his shoes.
However, this is where my praise ends. This is where I'll informally rant about this book's wasted potential and it all came from once the band has made it to the USA. In my opinion, there's quite literally no substance and it seemed as if the author had lose interest in continuing the story. Leading to the reduction of character depth, this is shown significantly with Griff, who has been assaulted both physically and mentally which arguably makes him the character who had experienced the most, the writing fails to expand the emotions he had held for his brother's death, getting sidelined and instead transforms into this comic-relief of a man where he's written as 'Yorkshireman who spouts profanity and makes hilarious jokes'. Transitioning to Elf, who is the only female member of the band, I dislike how her plotline of finding attraction to Luisa was just 'I'm in love with a girl..But, I'm a girl!'. Paying no mind to how she was struggling to find her sexuality in that part where her ex-boyfriend, Bruce, spiked her drink to cause hallucinations of her sister calling her the lesbian slur, no mention whatsoever.
This is STILL not the portion which impacted my view of this book and that is the handling of Jasper's main hallucination 'Knock Knock', which is the most poorly thought coming from this book. Even with the praise of confusion in mind, the amount of sudden lore-dumping and unnecessary storyline connected to this sadistic being is beyond anything and I never wanted to bare through two pages less than chapter 472-473. In my opinion, 'Knock Knock' would've been a better entity if his purpose was to mainly focus on damaging Jasper as a way to achieve his goal of possessing him rather than cursing his bloodline. Relating to this, it angers me the fact in which Jasper just hid his condition from his bandmates, all the questioning about what's wrong with him comes unanswered and only is followed by a 'It's a long story', this is another point in which the band is so obviously distant in the final half. Other than interviews, concerts and breakfast, I suppose, there is no scene where the band is collectively together unlike portions in the first half which benefited their relationship with one another.
Finally, there is Dean Moss. Surprisingly, I don't have any complains about his character in the USA and, to me, his development was responsibly handled. From him seeking to finish the business with Dempsey, his relationships, and him accepting parenthood, but that ending rushed as all hell and alludes to my point that the author had lose interest in continuing the story. In conclusion, though I do find the characters endearing and attachable, it isn't enough to save an intolerable story. Review aside, I do desire for more fan content to be produced of the characters, whether it's fan-art or fan-fiction, I'm just starving because there's barely any discussion.
