RGBA Split nodes
Those are optimization gods, you can pack it all in one single 1024 texture and use each channel as a separate map. My only question is how to generate those in PS, using overlay as layer mode probably? I’m looking forward to that.

Important info I’ve found today in substance painter: - Your stencils must be a Black and white png, otherwise, if you just leave the black as transparent it wont work. - You should be aware of your tangent space when color picking ID masks from the viewport. If it doesnt work in the 3D view, try it out getting the color from the UV space. - You can actually have some awesome blending effects only by adding a fill layer with the Ambient Occlusion and setting it as Overlay. Bye!

Taikô Truck UVs Finished
Well, I finally got back to the Taikô Truck since September 2015, this time I’ll make a version to upload in sketchfab. Tomorrow will be a better day since I’ll start baking some maps and get it ready to Ndo2 and Substance Painter. I’m also thinking about making a Pearl Paint material in SD, but I’m not sure about that yet. Here’s some renders from Cycles (Using the Physically Based Fresnel Node) and viewport screenshots:

Storyboards and Narrative Focus
Well today’s topic is about the story itself. First of all, it’s good to mention that a good plot doesnt come around from a immediate magic moment or another. You need to think right about the objectives of your narrative and what your characters are doing there. I had plenty of time struggling with myself to obtain something entertained. At the really start I knew that I wanted to do something with that rover character, and that the stage for it would be in mars. For the past few weeks I’ve been watching a plenty of animated shorts, mostly from this channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-1rx8j9Ggp8mp4uD0ZdEIA After you lurk enough around with what is currently out there, you start to see some pattern about their narrative structure and mostly their covered themes. There is alot of self annotations when you’re tying to create something, mostly of those are stuff that I discarted later, and throw shit on paper is an important process other then getting feedback from people, otherwise you’re doing the story for yourself, only.

One of the first shots I had in mind was an introduction one. A huge desert, lots of sand, burning sands. The hover would appear in the distance and look to collect pictures and evidence of water in the surface. Well, that’s what I had in mind in the start.  That is it for today, cya!

Rocks and Panoramas!
Today I improved the sky HDR and started blocking out the first shots. The HDR itself isnt quite ready yet, still needs some color balance and other toon aspects. AND....I’ve been working in another character that will appear in the story. (Stay tuned for it! :D) You can check out my pinterest panel about Mars surface refs: https://www.pinterest.com/luisocherubini/mars-surface/ I use them for lots of stuff and has been really helpful by now. If you know other pictures please share bellow! So let’s talk about rocks. Recently I’ve been talking with my friend Glauco Caon (Artist and Geologist) and he told me some cool aspects about rock formations and its different shapes:

That’s key for reproducing and styling them, specially alien rocks. This is what I’ve made previously:

I’m planing to add more scale and color variation, so I can keep kit bashing them around the scenario. I’m sure that it will come to a good use.

Did you know?
The original name for our rover was Boxbot, and it’s main purpose was to be a canvas mesh to my personal BPR tests in Blender Cycles materials, when the idea came along, the character was already there and perfectly ready to the acting.

Originally his tank-like wheels wherent there. The change came from a previous observation regarding actual rover wheels, since NASA cant change his tires when he’s there, they use super durable ones:

And dont worry about the blue sky, it’s Blender’s default. I’ll be keepeing it as a placeholder for now.
