Just a good old college AU, where nothing is wrong, and The Wizard is just a politician
Imagine Glinda accidentally traveling back in time for one reason or another and running into Elphaba in the woods.
She tries to skirt around who she is at first, before spilling the beans at Elphaba's unimpressed face. So now Elphaba's trying to help her get back to her time, with the added benefit of now having to hide a whole grown-ass adult.
She's also trying not to let her curiosity get the best of her because last she checked, Galinda and she were still pretty deep in their loathing era so why is Glinda being so nice to her?
Meanwhile, Glinda is just charmed by college student Elphaba. Had she always been so serious? And where had her glasses gone?
The first problem comes when night falls and they both realize Glinda has nowhere to stay. Elphaba suggests starting a makeshift camp before quickly offering up her dorm room upon seeing the unease on Glinda's face.
It should be fine, Galinda was going to be out with her friends anyway so she won't be back until sometime tomorrow.
The next problem is sneaking her into the room. No one pays Elphaba any mind, but the stranger next to her hidden within her borrowed coat certainly draws attention.
Another problem arises when they get to the dorm and Glinda insists she share Elphaba's bed.
"It isn't proper for me to sleep in her bed when she's unaware Elphie,"
"But you are her,"
So now they're bunking it on the same small bed and entirely too close for Elphaba's comfort, but it's fine, it's fine. It's just for tonight, hopefully, and then everything will alright in the morning.
Except, the morning starts with Galinda bursting into the dorm room like hell-on-wheels, startling the cuddling occupants on Elphaba's bed into alertness.
The silence and ensuing staredown are only broken when Galinda releases an angry yell, and the two are left scrambling for their things as they are basically thrown out of the dorm by the younger Upland
It seems that rumors had gotten back to Galinda that Elphaba snuck in her older, hot girlfriend and she stayed the night
Unacceptable
Everyone is blind to the fact that Galinda and Glinda are literally the same person, they're just face blind except for Elphaba

Just looking at Glinda’s wedding outfit and my unnamed god! This f*cking lesbian 👁️👄👁️
Tumblr media
The design of her wedding dress resembles Elphie’s glasses!
Tumblr media
Then this emerald earring?! Is that in the shape of a bird?! Is this a nod to Elphie’s flight abilities? Or a nod to the verse that she’s the Skybird in For Good?
Tumblr media
She really out here singing she wants to marry Fiyero when her whole f*cking outfit is screaming Elphaba 🤣

And that’s the tragedy isn’t it? She is her person. She is everything. But as long as the wizard has Glinda, she would be used against Elphaba.
Glinda’s “betrayal” will hurt all the more then.
Tumblr media
it's important to me that you all know just how happy glinda makes elphie
she really is her sweet. her heart's desire. her only friend (sorry dr dilly and fiyero and chistery). the only person to really see her, to truly understand her. she sees the beauty and good in elphie when elphaba doesn't see it in herself. she always knows how to lighten the mood with a joke or silly antics or a smile
glinda really is just her person

OMG new shots just dropped. As if this movie couldn’t get any gayer! 🌈😫😭
Tumblr media
This f*cking repressed lesbian just invited her Enemy of the State ex-situationship (who has just probably ruined her wedding) INSIDE her room on her wedding night?! Still on her wedding dress?! With that look on her face and yearning doe eyes??? 👁️🫦👁️
Come on be for real 🫠
Tumblr media
Then we got this shot probably during or after Wonderful. You just knowwww Gurl gave in to the temptation and said yes to Glinda’s proposal to be together forever proposition to change the system from within. Moments before disaster….
Tumblr media
The tension… oh the tension 🥵💖💚 I can’t with this movie! 😖😫💀
Anyway don’t mind me. I’ll just listen to ALAYM Gelphie version for the 100th time to tide me over till November 🙃🙃🙃

I agree with all of this! I swear adding Glinda in Wonderful is probably the best decision the movie made. Pardon my Gelphie rant since this will be long.
My theory is after Thank Goodness it will cut to the Elphaba activism scenes of freeing the animals/disrupting the building of the yellow brick road, causing mass panic. This would trigger Diggs and Morrible to have Glinda and Fiyero marry early for damage control instead of the engagement party we see in the play. Then the shot of the wedding interrupted by the rebel animals inspired by Elphaba (added scenes of Glinda and Fiyero relieved that the wedding was crashed and yearning/worrying for Elphie 🥹)
Then we cut to Glinda’s balcony scene where she is calling out for Elphie in her wedding gown (oh why Elphie would visit her on her wedding night instead of directly going to the throne room? 😏) where she will seduce persuade Elphie to join the wizard. At this point, I think Glinda aligns with your 2nd theory. She’s not naive and has always seen the Wizard for what he is, but is going along with the propaganda for self-preservation and her ambitions. She has probably studied their dynamics and is trying to gather power of her own. As with the movie synopsis, she probably gathered enough power that they weren’t able to ignore her voice and is now able to broker a truce between the Wizard and Elphie (she worked hard on the swing tunnel of love 💕 dang it!😩)
This would perfectly characterize Glinda’s selfishness and hubris, thinking she can manipulate the Wizard and the populace. She wants more. She wants it all. Despite being given everything she dreamed of (popularity, wealth and a picture-perfect fiance) she is not satisfied (cue “I couldn’t be happier”). She has an Elphie-sized hole inside her that she wants to fill, however she also wants the power that was given to her by the same system that persecuted Elphie. I think at that point, she wanted to emulate the dynamics of Diggs and Morrible. She being the soft power and Elphie the hard power. With Elphie by her side, they’re unlimited and could wrestle control from the terrible duo and then they could be together forever!
Of course it will backfire in the worst way possible. Glinda would encounter an Elphie who is tired from being on the run for years, that has just been betrayed by her own sister, a dead father cause of her and probably ptsd from the body horror of Boq becoming the Tin Man. Elphie was vulnerable and Glinda would take advantage (cue the starlight romantic broom swing-set and rainbow wedding dance) then the Wizard would be there singing how Wonderful everything will be if she just let go. That Glinda is waiting for her at the other side of the rainbow. And of course, Elphie would give in! Glinda would be over the moon! She got her Elphie!!! If only it would last….
Elphie would discover Dr. Dillamond in a cage and would go on a rampage. Elphie would think Glinda is complicit with his torture and would go scorched earth. She expected this from the Wizard, but her Glinda?! Oh I doubt she’s aware of Dr. Dillamond and will be frantic in her denial but Elphie would’ve find it hard to believe her since it’s the 2nd betrayal by her important person. Cue the guards then of course Fiyero comes in to the rescue. The line “All this time, the two of you, behind my back?!” would take on a different meaning.
Here she was, working hard to give Elphie everything, to keep her safe, to be together forever, and Elphie would throw it all away. And worse, she breaks her promise and would once again pick Fiyero over her (they should’ve included that deleted scene of Elphie’s promise not to leave her in movie, it would’ve 2x the impact if connected with this scene). Coupled with Elphie initially saying YES to joining her and the Wizard in the previous scene (which very much sounds like a proposal, come to think of it) that Elphie would renege on (perfectly reasonable), this would’ve gutted Glinda hard.
Everyone thinks Glinda would be left at the altar but this will probably be where she is left behind. I find it fascinating that Elphie and Glinda are the ones wearing marriage colors of black and white (Fiyero I think wears the green suit of the Gale Force?). Glinda is now the “bride left behind” and Elphie the “runaway groom”.
Glinda probably cracked here and in her desperation to get Elphie back, she suggests using Nessa as bait which of course caused her death. I think some people will view Fiyero as Elphie’s rebound during ALAYM since he’s literally the only one left to comfort her with Glinda and Nessa’s betrayal. Then we will have the fight on the corn field which I hope wouldn’t be played for laughs (also hoping it would be sexy as hell with the two of them throwing hands 😏). Then Fiyero also “dies”. Now no one’s left. I really wish the movie would change the fact that the plan of leaving Oz would come from Elphaba and not Fiyero. It would lead to a more angsty dynamic of Elphie being alone without anyone with her (including Fiyero) and would contrast nicely with Glinda also being alone. I don’t have problems with Fiyero, just it would be have more angst that way (it’s my opinion sue me 🤣)
This has been a long rant. My brain chemistry has been changed due to Wicked and now I have Gelphie brainrot 😩
i'm really curious and excited about how the movie equivalent of wonderful seems to include glinda there as persuasion for elphaba to join the wizard, which changes all the dynamics going on. i keep thinking through the bits we've seen in the trailer in context of the full story, and in my mind there are a few ways this could play out:
there's one extreme where glinda still fully trusts the wizard at this point and genuinely is trying to get elphaba to come to their side and join their team. i think this has the most potential for angst, because elphaba would really see glinda as aligned with the enemy and against her cause. it could be really interesting to see glinda deep in the wizard's regime to the point where she now believes the propaganda she's been spreading.
then there's the other extreme where during the private swing(?) moments we saw, glinda suggests a plan to join the wizard under false pretenses and work from within to actively remove him from power. this seems the least likely to me since it's still early in glinda's act 2 arc for direct action, but ariana grande said a few times on the part 1 screenings circuit that glinda's perspective in defying gravity was that they'd be more powerful working from within and changing the system from the inside out. so, it could potentially be something glinda's been thinking about over the years.
i'm leaning that it'll be somewhere in-between. it's after thank goodness, so glinda already has some hesitations about her role but is still trying to convince herself staying there is for the best. the new synopsis on the movie's website says glinda is "haunted by her separation from elphaba" and that she then "attempts to broker a conciliation between elphaba and the wizard." so i'm thinking glinda misses elphaba so much that she's willing to help push the wizard's propaganda on her if it means getting her back. going back to the swing scene, i think she tries to convince elphaba to compromise and let herself be a reformed figure with the wizard in order to gain some power to eventually work from within and implement policies that support elphaba's cause. i also think the "think of what we could do together" callback will be somewhere along these lines -- glinda proposing that if they can work alongside the wizard for now, they can combine magical power and social power to eventually change the system. however elphaba will obviously not abandon her morals to stay complacent even for a brief period of time, so this would push her further from glinda. glinda would essentially be asking elphaba to change who she fundamentally is in favor of the possibility of later progress (and in favor of them getting to permanently stay together, which is a deliciously angsty dynamic that would probably lead to both of them feeling betrayed/abandoned in the fallout in different ways).
i'm excited to see how the tension between them in part two may be mainly rooted in their fundamental differences and their different approaches to gaining and maintaining power, hopefully moreso than the love triangle drama. having glinda in wonderful will set that up so nicely

Endlessly baffled every time I see people water down Glinda’s actions in Defying Gravity to “oh she was too cowardly or too selfish to stand by Elphaba,” as if she didn’t spend that entire sequence from Chistery’s transformation onward doing everything in her very limited power to keep Elphaba safe.
Like the second things start going wrong, Glinda’s entire focus switches to “keep Elphaba safe at all costs.” This girl does not have any magic. She does not have any physical survival skills. She probably has no idea how to throw a punch. She can barely run in those heels. Her one power is her charm and her ability to work a crowd. She is desperately trying to get Elphaba to come back with her not because she agrees with what the Wizard and Morrible are doing, but because she thinks maybe if she can just smooth things over, Elphaba will be forgiven, and she’ll be safe.
In that regard, there’s a very obvious selfishness to Glinda’s actions - she lacks perspective; she lacks scope; she prioritizes Elphaba over what we as the audience would understand as the “Greater Good” and over her own morals about what’s going on with the Wizard’s agenda; she’s visibly horrified by what happens to Chistery but her first instinct is to comfort Elphaba above all else, despite having no understanding of what's happening.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am the last person who’s ever going to argue that Glinda isn’t selfish, because she very clearly is, it’s one of her defining characteristics, and it’s one of the main things she has to learn to overcome in order to actually become “Glinda the Good.” This is in no way me trying absolve my very selfish girl who very much made the wrong decision.
But it does kinda boggle my mind when I see the argument that Glinda betrayed Elphaba or is a “fake friend.” Especially because ultimately she comes to the conclusion that the best thing she can do for Elphaba in this moment is to let her go. She knows she would only hinder Elphaba if she were to go with her, she knows there’s no happy ending for them if she tries to run away with her (I think in that moment she might even suspect there’s no happy ending at all). Elphaba is going through her own personal revelation which is beautiful in its own right, but it’s also impulsive, and there’s a certain level of unsustainable grandiose fantasy to it. Glinda almost lets herself be swept up in it for a moment, but her rational side kicks in, because, of the main trio, Glinda really is the most grounded in reality.
I’ve seen a lot of weirdly smug people out there proudly saying if Fiyero was there he definitely would’ve gotten on the broom with Elphaba - and honestly, I think they’re probably right. But it’s not because he’s somehow morally superior to Glinda, or that his love for Elphaba is more pure. Our boy is depressed, he’s nihilistic, he’s lost, and truly doesn’t have any attachments to anyone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was genuinely moved by Elphaba’s fearless convictions and he fell hard and fast for her, so I agree he’d be on that broom in a heartbeat, he quite literally has nothing to lose, and everything to gain. He’s found himself wanting to believe in something for the first time because Elphaba brought that out in him, his whole world revolves around her. And that’s very romantic, but because of that, the stakes are much lower. For him, leaving everything behind wouldn’t be a sacrifice, it would be freedom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Glinda’s gone through the world much differently, much more carefully. She doesn’t have Fiyero’s sense of nihilism or detachment, she’s lashed herself tight to the reality of the world around her. Where Fiyero has been regularly kicked out of schools and freely wandered from place to place experiencing new things and getting into trouble on purpose, Glinda has never stepped outside the predictable comfort and safety of her bubble until meeting Elphaba. She lives in constant fear of failure and being looked down on. She is forever clinging to this persona she’s created because she’s terrified of what will happen if she’s anything less than perfect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She has constructed her entire existence around being an icon rather than a person - in the beginning, she literally doesn’t know how to be her own self, she’s just barely learning, because of Elphaba. And it scares the shit out of her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fiyero would likely play action hero if he was there for Defying Gravity, and that’s great, but Glinda is weighing a million things in her head, not least of which is “holy shit the person I love most in the world is in imminent danger and I have no magic and no strength to keep her safe, so I will beg and plead and insult and fight her tooth and nail to keep her with me inside my privileged bubble because maybe I can smooth this over, maybe everything will be okay if I just do what I always do and use my privilege to get my way.” She understands the rules of her world, so she’s going to play by those rules because that’s how you win the game.
Elphaba, of course, refuses to play a corrupt game at all, and Glinda gets angry - she lashes out at Elphaba because Elphaba has just put herself in such a dangerous situation, and Glinda is completely powerless to change it. Every little bit of control Glinda is used to having is obliterated.
Tumblr media
Her “Maybe you’re not as powerful as you think you are” when Elphaba doesn’t grow wings is so desperate - the words border on cruel, but her tone is both painfully apologetic and above all filled with RELIEF because while her heart hurts for Elphaba, she’s terrified that Elphaba would hurt herself the way Chistery was hurt, and she’s cleaving to the hope that maybe if Elphaba isn’t as powerful as she thinks she is, Glinda stands a chance at undoing the damage, and protecting her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Glinda’s selfishness is just so fascinating to me because it’s so rich and so contradictory - she loves Elphaba so deeply and destructively that she fully paralyzes herself when the chips are down and it breaks them both. She fails to be what Elphaba wants her to be, and she fails to be a good person, but there’s no “fake friend” about her actions - she is acting on pure desperation to keep this person she loves safe in literally the only way she knows how, at the cost of everything else, including what’s right, which is something Elphaba could never abide by. Elphaba would never compromise her own morals, but at this point in the story Glinda is willing to compromise everything as long as Elphaba is tucked away in her bubble with her, and that difference in values is irreconcilable to both of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, realizing this, Glinda does the one last thing she can think of to protect her at this point, and wraps a cloak around her shoulders to keep her warm. That’s all that’s left.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She’s selfish and she’s cowardly and she’s brave and she’s loving and she fails Elphaba and she fails herself and she regrets her decision for the rest of her life and yes I am writing all this with glass under my tongue and between my teeth, she makes me insane.
