“This is nice, yeah?”
Chris sat at his own laptop as his character chased you around your farm, watching as you watered crops for the two of you. In a minute, he’d head off to the mines for the day, but he liked watching you work. You’d played this game for years, racked up hundreds of hours, and so when he asked if the two of you could start your own farm together while you were home recovering from being sick on your birthday… It had put the light back into your eyes immediately. The two of you had takeout for an early dinner, and now you were working on your little farm together.
“It is,” you hummed. “I’ll keep working on the ocean fish bundle, by the way. It’s a good luck day, so you should be able to make it maybe another ten levels in the mines if you keep at it? I left some salads in a chest for you to take.”
Okay, and maybe he was realizing just how intense you were about this whole thing. To be fair, he knew how serious you were about games. Felix had introduced you to him forever ago as one of his gaming buddies, and even then he’d been exposed to the fact that sometimes you would make spreadsheets for things. He’d seen your sims legacy challenge and both the family tree and the spreadsheet attached to it. Felix had teased him about it once, saying that you were serious about things sometimes… and yet Chris found himself falling harder for you and your passions more and more over time. The fact that you liked him back was what surprised him, only to find out that the reverse was true for you.
“I mean… You’re you,” was what you had said to him, visibly a little nervous. “You’re cute, you’re funny, you’re incredibly talented… It’s kinda crazy that you’re into me and my dorky… everything, I guess.”
Well, your dork stuff was what endeared him to you in the beginning. And he knew that now, playing this game with you, that you were holding back on how intense you really could be. If he didn’t make it through those ten levels in the mines, you wouldn’t care at all. You hadn’t before, saying that your intensity was what was fun for you. If he enjoyed taking it easy, then you wouldn’t push—although you did know how he could get while playing Genshin, purely from witnessing it yourself. Completing the bundles in this game was really the only thing you did get intense over. The farm you two shared didn’t have any sort of cohesion to it, mainly because it was still early game and the two of you had plans to map it out later once you had the funds to do whatever you wanted with it.
Chris just smiled at you for a moment, watching as you ran your little character off the farm to begin working toward your goal. “Hey.”
“Mhm?”
“You’re cute.” He giggled. “Can I come fish with you instead?”
You glanced up, smiling. “You can always come fish with me if you want. I’ll be on the docks.”
He set off after you after dumping his supplies into a chest to get his fishing gear instead, setting down a sign on his way off the farm. Through idle chatter, the two of you sat at the beach, fishing up ocean fish until you were out of stamina and food and space to keep your fish in your inventory. He followed your character back through the town, checking trash cans the entire way back. He saw the look of confusion cross your face, listened to the way you muttered under your breath as you read the text aloud…
“What do you mean ‘go check our bed’?” You looked up. “Chris?”
“Throw your fish in and go to bed,” he said. “And then go look.”
You did as prompted. The moment the two of you had your characters in bed and the earnings screen popped up, he watched as you stood, making your way to your bedroom. Barely a minute later, you had returned to him, clutching a wrapped book in your hands.
“Christopher, you didn’t.”
He giggled, watching you. “You love this game!”
“I know! But–” You’d already begun tearing off the wrapping paper to reveal the very cookbook you’d talked about wanting for the past few months, only to debate with yourself over whether you’d actually cook something from it. “Chris…” You pouted at him. “You’re sweet.”
He opened an arm out to you, letting you sit on his lap for a moment. He wrapped his arms around you, happily settling in.  “It’s your birthday! I couldn’t just get you nothing—I got you a shirt, too, but it got delayed.”
You pouted at him again, wrapping an arm around him as you leaned against him. “I’ll look through it later and see what looks good.” And then you turned, kissing him on the cheek. “And you didn’t have to get me anything, you know. I was happy just playing games with you.”
“Well.” He hooked his arms around your waist. “Now you get me and a cookbook… and a new shirt in a few days.”
Setting the book aside, you turned, fingers underneath his chin so that you could guide him into a proper kiss this time. When you drew back, you just smiled at him again. “I love you. You’re—you’re adorable, you big dork.” “And I’m yours,” he giggled. “Happy birthday, baby.”

Tumblr media
Jihoon’s newest project had been a secret to you, and… frankly, you weren’t exactly sure why. His little office space was already something that you never entered: he had everything set up the way he liked it, and he’d always told you that he would make room for you if you needed it. And, sure, maybe you did need it, but considering the two of you didn’t have any other roommates, the dinner table was a fine enough office space when you needed it to be. But for the past few weeks, Jihoon had asked that you avoid the room entirely—no peeking in, just because he was working on something more confidential at work and needed the promise of security.
You didn’t question it, though. You spent most of your working hours actually at your job nowadays, so the apartment was left entirely to him then anyway. But it did mean that you made sure you knocked and stepped away if you needed an extra pair of hands for any reason—whether that be to help you fold laundry or with dinner or just moving the couch back an inch or so whenever you expected company like mister long-legged Kim Mingyu. He’d always sheepishly apologized for taking up so much room when he came over for game nights, but you’d waved him off. Mingyu could just help you move it back, but you liked having it pushed back before your friends arrived.
Until now. Jihoon had held out a blindfold to you when you came home. “Happy birthday,” he said quietly. “I want to show you something.” Then a quiet pause. “Two somethings, actually.”
Jihoon simply didn’t do surprises often. That was something you always appreciated about him: the most he ever really did was surprise you with a little trinket or treat he picked up while he was out, or sometimes with dinner on the nights you were supposed to cook but needed the break instead. Jihoon’s surprises were always something subtle, something that told you he was listening and paying attention to you. So you donned the blindfold, ready to see what he had waiting for you.
You knew the layout of your apartment well enough to know he’d brought you straight to his office. He rolled his chair back, gently guiding you down to sit in it before he reached past you to mess around on his computer.
“I wrote you a song.” He said, plain as day. “Since I’ve been able to make more music lately… I finally finished it last night.”
Jihoon had told you that he was writing you a song over a year ago. It’d been a casual little remark, just something to tell you about while eating lunch together one day. Every so often, you’d ask about it, just to see if he made progress on it. Sometimes he did, sometimes he didn’t: work got in the way, as did everything else in life in different ways. But he always promised that he would show it to you as soon as he could. Holding out almost an entire day, though, surprised you. He’d always been excited to show you his work, to show off the songs he composed and either sung himself or brought one of his very talented friends in to record for it.
He clamped the headphones over your ears, and tapped a key, and you were met with this soft, sweet melody before the warm voice of Jihoon. All you did for the next few minutes was listen to the tender lyrics as he sang about his love for you, how you were his happiness. His baby. All of the things that you were sure Jihoon would turn red if he had to say out loud, especially if anyone else was around to hear it, but the things he would always want you to hear.
You slowly removed the headphones, still blindfolded as you turned to hopefully find Jihoon. Your hand bumped into his side, and he took it within his own. “That was beautiful, Jihoon” you said. “I… might need a minute to pull my thoughts together.” A second later, you tacked on, “... And the other thing?”
“Hold on.” He let go of your hand, rolling your chair a little forward and turning you away from where his computer was sitting. “You can take it off.”
So you did. And immediately, Jihoon’s project became apparent. He’d moved things around, setting up a workspace for you on the opposite side of the room. A desk, your work laptop, and anything and everything you would need to work comfortably. Where did he find the time to buy you a desk and put it together…? Or the nice desk chair he’d bought you. You set aside his headphones, walking over to pull the chair out and sit in it. It provided you far better back support than the chair you had at work, and that was something the company prided itself on paying for.
“How did you—”
“I got a promotion,” he said quietly. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. But… They gave me an actual office, so I don’t have to keep some of my work documents here anymore—and, um, a nicer desk, so I could put some of the things you bought me on it…” He scratched his cheek nervously. “I was going to tell you,  but… I was talking to Seungcheol, and I mentioned I wanted to give you space here, and he said he’d help me keep it a secret so I could surprise you.”
The urge to cry welled up within your chest, and you stood, making your way over to pull him into your arms. You hugged him tight, shutting your eyes for a moment. “It’s perfect. Thank you.”
“I—I, um…” He was blushing, and you could feel that heat radiating off of his face. “I like our dinner table, but… I think you deserve something better for you if you have to sit. Cheol helped me compare chairs, and…”
You just kissed him instead. “I love it. I love you.” You blinked back tears. When was the last time someone went through so much effort for you…?
“Happy birthday,” he said quietly. “I’m glad you like it.”
All you could do was just kiss him one more time. If you were his happiness… then he was yours, too.

Soonyoung was quiet as he left his apartment that night, the only sign that someone else had been awake being the tell-tale sounds of Jihoon’s late night work. Maybe his roommate had looked up for a moment, waving to him while Soonyoung was more focused on getting out quietly, but he’d think more about that later. Instead, he made his way to the stairwell, making his way outside as quickly as he could without waking anyone up. It was late, there were other people in this complex, and the least he could do is make his little getaway as quiet as possible. He gripped his keys in one hand, the other carrying his luggage, and soon enough he emerged out into the parking lot to get to his car. He climbed in, started the ignition, and finally breathed for the first time since he left his room.
Step one done. Step two drive to your apartment.
It wasn’t the first time Soonyoung had made a late night drive over to your place—and not for sexy reasons, as Seungcheol liked to tease him about. This past year, things had changed in your life, in your body itself actually. He’d been there every step of the way, holding your hand in doctor’s appointments that made you so, so deeply anxious. Blood tests, results, and then another blood test months later to see if your medication was doing anything for you… He didn’t blame you when you struggled to sleep, part of it related to your diagnosis. So sometimes you would just call or text him, telling him it was happening again, and he would come to your place without complaint. He’d climb into bed with you, and hold you while the sleeping pills kicked in, just to give you a little more reassurance that someone would be there in case something went wrong.
It never did. But as long as you needed that kind of thing to be at ease, he would always come running to give you that peace to sleep with. That’s what love was for, right?
The bright side, however, was that this wasn’t a call for him to come cuddle with you. This wasn’t a nightmare call, or even the rare “I’m hungry, please come eat snacks with me and then cuddle” call that he honestly lived for—this was his way of surprising you once the clock ticked over to midnight. The two of you were going to meet in the morning anyway to travel to Jeju for a long weekend together, but wouldn’t it just be easier for him to surprise you now? To leave together in the morning, rather than him picking you up? He smiled to himself as he came to a red light, fingers drumming against the steering wheel.
His phone buzzed. One glance at it told him that Jihoon had been awake and had seen him. Have a nice trip. Tell them I said happy birthday. And then a sum of money that Jihoon sent to Soonyoung rather than you, purely because there was no clear way of telling if you were awake or not now. He’d show it to you later and transfer it over. He shot back a quick thumbs up in response, right before the light changed and he dropped his phone back into the cupholder.
The drive to your apartment didn’t take that long on most days. Sometimes traffic could be rough, but something had to be smiling down on him tonight as the roads were clear and he could just focus on driving to you… and maybe a little on the song playing over his radio right now. He enjoyed his little karaoke session, even if the power ballad left him more tired than before, and he switched lanes as he grew closer to your building.
Eventually, he parked and made his way inside. He left his luggage there—he had spare clothes and toiletries at your place already, and there was no reason to drag his bag up there at this time of night. If you needed it for some reason (maybe to stash extra toiletries or something?), he’d just bring it up once the sun was up. Instead, he just bopped his head to the song inside of it as he waited for the elevator, fighting back the smile on his face. The doors opened, he stepped in, and with one button press he was whisked away to your floor.
Truth be told, he was excited for this little vacation with you. He liked getting to travel with you no matter where the two of you went, and this birthday trip was exactly what you deserved after all of your health concerns kept you on edge for so long. The medical field in general already caused you plenty of anxiety, having real problems that were getting addressed only made you more nervous. That was why he proposed this trip to begin with. Seungkwan had mentioned something about taking a little vacation for himself with his partner a few months ago, saying that it was something that both of them needed for different reasons. So he threw the idea out to you, and it kept  being put off. Another doctor's visit, a new medication to try, a new blood test to be run… but things had finally settled last month. So when he suggested going to Jeju for your birthday, you’d latched onto the idea immediately.
“You could use the break,” was what you said in response. “And I think maybe going to the beach would be nice for me, too.”
There was something sweet about the way you thought of his own health and stress, especially considering he’d told you about work getting to him. But he’d taken your face into his hands for a moment. “This is about you,” he’d said point blank. “Do you want to go? We can pick somewhere else if you do.”
Something about it had made you melt. “I’d like to go,” you said after a moment. “For both of us.”
The elevator doors slid open, and Soonyoung stepped out. It was easy enough to get into your apartment, since Soonyoung both knew the code and had a spare key in case he ever needed it, and he made sure to be as quiet as he could. He slipped out of his shoes and into his house slippers, stopping to turn off the light in the kitchen. You always did have the habit of forgetting to turn it off. Your cat rubbed against his legs as he stopped, crouching down to pet her behind the ears before he made his way to your room.
To his surprise, you’d actually been asleep. Not for long, unfortunately, but he’d hold you as long as you needed for you to fall back asleep. Soonyoung made his way over to the other side of your bed, abandoning his slippers as he crawled in, gently nudging you awake. With a yawn, you roused, turning to look at him in the low light.
“... Soonie?” Your voice was hoarse and quiet, and you rubbed at your eyes. “What time is it…?”
“Not time to get up,” he giggled, crawling under the blankets with you. “Happy birthday.”
You turned over, already nestling into his arms to fall back asleep. “Mmhm… happy birthday...”
Soonyoung just giggled again. He just settled in with you as you fell back asleep in his arms all too quickly. He’d just have to try again in the morning.

daisy's notes: i wish i had someone to surprise me with breakfast lol
Tumblr media
The last thing you expected to smell when you woke up that morning was breakfast being cooked. Your roommate, Seungmin, rarely cooked as it was—he handled other chores to make the arrangement fair, and the two of you did eat your fair amount of takeout on the nights neither of you felt like cooking at all—but it was your birthday… and he did imply that there’d be a surprise waiting for you in the morning. You had assumed it’d be like last year, where he left a cupcake on the counter for you before he had to race off to work… but breakfast was actually a lot nicer. So you rolled out of bed, and started getting ready for the day.
A few minutes later, Seungmin knocked at your door. “I’m leaving!” He called through it, and didn’t give you a chance to respond before he took off, footsteps heavy against the wooden floorboards.
You rolled your eyes a little at it. He didn’t even give you the chance to thank him. You’d just have to text him a bit once you knew he was on his bus to work. No matter: breakfast alone wasn’t a new thing in your life, even if it was something you hadn’t dealt with in a while. If there wasn’t Seungmin, then there was Felix, either cooking for you or treating you out so that he could see you for a little bit. Sometimes one of Felix’s close friends, Changbin, too: usually when Felix was abroad for work, Changbin (or Chris, if he was available) was dragging you somewhere to make up for your boyfriend’s absence.
With a sigh, you opened the door, making your way straight to the bathroom to wash your face. Only the sound of someone moving about your apartment caught your attention, and you slowed to a stop.
Felix paused, looking up from setting the table with a smile. “Good morning,” he giggled. “I missed you—”
Immediately, you launched yourself at him, making it to him within seconds before you threw your arms around him and hugged him tight. “I thought you were in Paris.”
“I… might have lied about when my flight back was,” he said. “It was Seungmin’s idea—”
“No, it wasn’t.” You breathed in the scent of his cologne, eyes falling shut for a moment as you just squeezed him tight. Felix was sweet, but you knew about his playful side as much as anyone did. Seungmin might have encouraged the idea of surprising you… but the idea had to be Felix’s.
He held you, swaying in place. “Are you mad?”
To be honest… you could have been. It was a lie that he’d only be able to call you on your birthday, and you had been upset over the idea of not seeing him until tomorrow morning. All he had told you was that his flight back would have been today, and he might not have been awake enough to come see you unless Changbin dropped him off at your apartment building. It would have been late, past midnight, and you’d told him to take care of himself first. His health was more important than him pushing himself to see you.
But you weren’t. Not when he had made you breakfast and smiled at you so radiantly, so clearly proud of being able to surprise you in a way that he knew you wouldn’t mind. Showing up to your apartment with every single person you knew was always off the table… but Felix showing up? A fully welcome surprise, even if he had to fudge some details to do it.
“No, I’m not mad,” you finally said out loud, and he relaxed against you. “God, I should have known Seungmin wouldn’t cook me breakfast. Especially when he has to work…”
Felix laughed, “I think he would if you needed him to.” He wiggled out of your grasp, taking your face into his hands so that he could plant a quick kiss on you. “I’ll finish plating everything so we can eat. And then… I’m yours for the day, yeah? I bought you something in Paris, by the way, but I left it at my place.”
“Did you sleep?” You frowned at him, studying his face. “I’m glad you’re here, baby, but if you need to rest…”
Felix took your hand in his own, pressing another kiss against your knuckles. “I went straight home. Changbin practically had to carry me to bed… but I’m good. I’m awake now. If I need a nap later, I’ll let you know, alright?”
With a quick peck against his lips, you parted from him to go wash your face. “As long as you mean it. I wouldn’t mind a nap with you later anyway.”
He caught you by the hand, though, just so you would turn and face him again as he smiled at you. “Hey. Happy birthday. I love you.”
And the world seemed a little brighter now. “I love you, too, silly. I’m glad you’re here.”

“You’re a little obvious, you know.”  Mingyu had been cradling his face in one hand as he watched Wonwoo carefully cut a slice of cake for himself. “You dote on them so much.”
Wonwoo said nothing as he stabbed a fork into each strawberry that decorated the top of the cake, setting them side on his plate to be transferred to your own once he was done slicing the cake for the five of you. There was nothing to say, really: Wonwoo knew he’d doted on you all day today. He’d made an effort to pack you a nice lunch since you had to work after one of your coworkers took maternity leave early due to pregnancy stress (not that you minded: you told him that she was always sweet to you, and you’d rather pick up her work than have her struggle further as she neared her due date), tucking a little note into the box telling you that he loved you. He’d gone grocery shopping with Mingyu, who had kindly offered to cook tonight for your little get-together, and taken the time to buy more of the snacks that you liked while he was there. Even now, while Seungcheol told you a story about the trip to the mountains the four of them took a few years ago, Wonwoo found little ways to take care of you. The strawberries were just another way of making you happy. That was all.
“I’m not saying it’s bad, by the way,” Mingyu said after a moment. “It’s cute.”
Wonwoo’s nose scrunched up a little when he smiled. “Don’t call me cute.”
“You are! You’re so soft with them.” Mingyu looked toward where you were sitting, laughing at part of the story, infecting Seungcheol with laughter as he struggled to tell you the next part. He turned again, “It’s just clear that you love them a lot without having to say it.”
Wonwoo continued to slice the rest of the cake. No one had sang to you, but that was by choice: Wonwoo had made sure all of them knew not to do it, because you hated making a big deal out of the day. That was why you called this a little “birthday get-together” rather than a party. It was just the two of you hosting your friends (... one of which cooked, but Mingyu volunteered and you hadn’t pushed back on that at all considering you had to work) and celebrating your birthday in a more laid-back way. Soon enough, the five of you were seated again, and Wonwoo was silently placing his strawberries onto your own plate to enjoy.
You met his gaze, mouthing a quiet thanks before digging into your own slice of cake. It was Vernon’s turn to tell you about the kitten he had adopted recently and how the little guy was adjusting to living in his apartment. His older cat had already met him and seemed to take to him quickly, although it was clear to Vernon that he was still learning how to play with the kitten. But he was good: the older cat was older and more mellow, and sometimes Vernon would come home to see the kitten trying to gnaw his ear off while the elder just sat there, eyes shut, waiting for the oh-so-vicious attack to finally end when Vernon nudged a jingle-ball in his direction to chase after.
“Maybe we should get another cat,” you mused aloud, not even looking toward Wonwoo yet. You knew he’d be on board with the idea by itself: the reality of it was something you’d have to talk about further.
Vernon bobbed his head, “I’ll send you the address of the place I went. They’re super cool about the animals they shelter—I’m thinkin’ of volunteering with them sometime.”
“So how does it feel?” Seungcheol set down his beer, watching you for a moment. “Being older?”
Wonwoo watched the way you shrugged, stabbing a fork into one of the strawberries next to your slice of cake. “It… feels the same, I guess. I think I’m constantly learning about myself and changing, so… Getting older stopped feeling like such a big thing.”
“I miss being a kid,” Mingyu sighed. “Birthdays were fun then.”
Wonwoo nodded along, an arm draped along the back of your chair. “You can still do something fun, you know.”
“I do!” Mingyu rolled his eyes, “It’s just different. It’s like going to the park now versus as a kid. Walking through the park is nice, but sometimes I miss being a kid and playing tag.”
With a quiet nod, you pushed your fork through your cake. “I mean… I think I miss being a kid and not having to worry as much about things as I do now. But I’m glad I grew up. It gave me the chance to meet some pretty cool people, to be honest.”
That won Seungcheol over immediately, and Wonwoo hid a smile at the sappy look on his friend’s face. Not that he didn’t feel the same way: he knew what you meant, and that you didn’t just mean him. He knew that growing up had been difficult for you. But now you were here, and you were with some of the cool people you cared about, and that was all that really mattered, wasn’t it? Pushing through the hard times to find the good? That was the way he saw it, at least.
“Sometimes you struggle,” you shrugged after a moment. “But sometimes you meet someone who gives you his strawberries just because he knows you like them, and you realize that braving it all was worth it, after all.”
Of course you’d call it out. It netted him immediate teasing from the rest of the group, but Wonwoo just leaned in, pressing a quick peck against your cheek. The teasing grew louder, but he whispered into your ear, “Happy birthday. I love you.” before he pulled away again.
He’d say it again later, once everyone was gone and everything was cleaned up. But your soft smile and a mouthed “I love you” made everything worth it.

“Okay.” You stood beside the couch, hands resting on your hips for a moment as you surveyed your  slightly battered boyfriend. “I think we’re good now, yeah?”
Vernon had barely heard you, though, too busy staring off into space. His arm was in a sling with one of those pain patches on the back of his shoulder, and you’d already rewrapped his ankle twice so that the bandages were snug but not too tight. You’d helped him get changed the moment the two of you came back home so that he could get focused on resting, and… And it was your birthday, so you shouldn’t have had to do any of those things. Chan or Seungkwan could have brought him home, and you could have stayed out with friends doing something fun. Instead, you drove him to urgent care. You stayed with him the entire time, and you handled everything without a single complaint.
The feeling of you tapping on his forehead lightly was what brought him back to reality. “Still here?” You smiled a little, perching yourself on the edge of the couch. “Are you feeling okay? I think you can take another painkiller in an hour if it's starting to bother you again—”
“You know you don’t have to take care of me, right?” He frowned a little. “I’m sorry I ruined your birthday.”
Your smile fell, and you poked his nose. “You didn’t do anything. The asshole at the rink did. Chan said management came out after we left and banned the guy for life after Seungkwan stopped yelling at him.” With a huff, you crossed your arms. “I mean, who the fuck body-checks a stranger at a rollerrink? He could have hurt more than just you.”
Technically, the guy almost hurt you before Vernon pushed you out of the way, but you didn’t need to know that. One minute Vernon had been teaching you the ropes (with Seungkwan and Chan there as moral support… and to help you if Vernon couldn’t), the next he’d seen some asshole barreling toward the two of you. All it’d taken was one shove to send you toward Chan, and then Vernon was on the floor of the rink. His shoulder was… fine, all things considered—it wasn’t a break, but both of the sprains he ended up with still hurt like hell. The sling was just to keep him from moving too much, and his ankle should be fine in a couple days since he could still put weight on it.
“He said the manager gave him vouchers and comped our rental skates today, at least. Chan said he’d send me the money for our share later.” With a sigh, your shoulders slumped. “Still… You didn’t do anything. I would never blame you for what some other dickhead did. Honestly, he’s probably lucky he only had to deal with Seungkwan. I don’t think I would have been able to hold back.”
He did know you’d never blame him, But… Still. If he had just moved a little farther… Vernon pushed the thought back. No point in dwelling on it: not when he knew the only reason he was dwelling was because it was your birthday. “I can get Seungkwan to come sit with me if you want. You can still go out—”
“I don’t wanna go out without you.” You pouted at him. “I mean… It’d be different if I already had plans with other people, but I don’t. It was just going to be the four of us today, and I liked that.”
You shouldn’t spend your birthday taking care of me, though. It’s your day, not mine. Vernon pressed his lips together, turning the thought over in his mind as he tried to come up with an alternate solution. If you weren’t going to leave, there was no point turning this into an argument. “What if…” He trailed off for a moment, those pretty brown eyes focusing on you again. “What if we just invite them over? Have dinner here? You might have to help me a little if we eat something with utensils, though.”
“Already planned on that,” you pressed a kiss to his cheek. “I’ll call Seungkwan. I think I might play the birthday card and ask him to bring some cinnamon rolls for us. I’m not feeling like having cake this year., and I don’t really wanna go back out to get them myself, y’know?”
Vernon said absolutely nothing.
“... You bought something, didn’t you?”
“I bought cupcakes?” He gave you a nervous smile. “From the place you like? Not a ton, just four since there’d be four of us, but…”
With a warm chuckle, you leaned in again to kiss him on the lips. “You’re adorable. I’m asking him anyway, but we can still have cupcakes tonight. Is there a candle I need to worry about?”
Vernon’s smile melted into something more relaxed, more him. “It’s shaped like a heart. I thought it’d be cute.” He opened an arm out to you. “C’mere.”
You carefully moved in, resting against his chest for a moment, leaning a little closer to the other side of him that didn’t have an injured shoulder. He wrapped his arm around you, holding you there in that awkward position for a moment.
“Yeah… we’re gonna have to figure something out later. I might not be able to cuddle you for a bit.”
You let out a soft laugh, angling your face so that you could press a kiss to the underside of his jaw. “I knew that, silly. The doctor said you pretty much need to sleep sitting up while you heal.” Sitting up again, you took one of his hands within your own. “We can always cuddle when you’re better.”
He smiled at you again, toying with your fingers idly for a moment before meeting your gaze again. “Hey. Happy birthday. Maybe we should do something a little safer next year?”
You just chuckled, leaning in to close the distance between the two of you. “We’ll see.”

“You know, you’ll never get anywhere with them if you don’t take your shot.” Minho took a long sip of his drink, having settled into the spot next to Jisung. He’d been looking at you for far too long to do nothing… and Minho knew that sometimes it could help to gently nudge him. “You helped put this together for them. Go talk to them.”
Jisung just kept his eyes on you, watching as you laughed hard at something Seungmin said, holding onto Chris for a moment to keep yourself steady. Seungmin was laughing, too: everyone was, really. And it wasn’t as if Jisung was jealous of that: he knew how to light up a room too sometimes, and he didn’t think he could ever be jealous of someone else bringing you joy. He tore his gaze away from you for just a moment. Changbin and Felix were sitting on the couch playing a video game, two controllers left open for anyone who wanted to join. Jeongin was watching from an armchair, and Hyunjin had settled closer to the music, bobbing his head along to it. A few of your friends were whispering off to the side, definitely aware of how you and Seungmin probably seemed like you would be perfect together if he—
Jisung shoved the thought back. No. No. He liked you. Seungmin didn’t. He knew Seungmin didn’t, because Seungmin knew that he liked you, and he kept making comments about it. He’d be making a comment about it right now if Minho wasn’t there. You and Seungmin were only ever going to be friends, and Jisung knew that Seungmin liked someone else anyway. But the tiny bit of jealousy in his stomach seemed to grow: he didn’t know how you felt about anyone, after all. He knew there was someone you liked, because you had let that slip to him… but you refused to say a name. The off chance said that it was him, but more realistically, it had to be one of his friends. Those were the only reasons you would hold the secret so close to your chest.
“I mean it.” Minho nudged him. “I’m not telling you to go confess your love for them. I think you should at least talk to them tonight. Did you even wish them a happy birthday? Or give them your present? I know it wasn’t with the others when they opened them earlier.”
… He hadn’t. You’d been surrounded by people all night, and he’d chickened out of letting his gift be added to the pile. It wasn’t anything special: just a necklace with a charm at the end shaped like a rocket. It was silly, but you’d understand the reference. He confided in you that sometimes he felt like he was ‘out of this world,’ like an alien, and you had said you’d happily be the first to get on a rocket to hang out with him anytime he wanted you to. Therefore: rocket pendant. Something personal. Too personal, even: you’d have to explain it to everyone, and he didn’t want everyone to know. There was something nice about keeping it between the two of you.
“I know it can be hard,” Minho said quietly. “But you should at least say happy birthday to them before they leave.”
He would. Jisung excused himself, heading out onto Chris and Felix’s small balcony for a few minutes. The party was getting too stuffy (or maybe being around so many people again was getting to him), and he could face you again once he’d cleared his head. Maybe even rehearsed what he wanted to say to you, just so he knew. He slid the door almost entirely shut behind him, and settled into one of the chairs he’d helped Felix drag up here months ago.
Time slipped past Jisung the way one would squeeze through a busy train. For a moment, he was aware of it and how fast the minutes seemed to tick by. Then the thought was gone, gaze set on the city and how it thrived at all hours of the day. Whatever hand it had brushed against him for a fleeting second, he’d forgotten about it. And, for a moment, about speaking to you… all because he’d been thinking about you. The idea of telling you how he felt… Minho wouldn’t encourage him to do things like that without a reason, right?
“Hyung?” Jeongin called out to him, leaning out from the apartment to do so. “Seungmin and I are going to head out in a few minutes. Do you want to walk with us?”
Jisung looked up. “Huh?”
“They just left,” Jeongin nodded back to the apartment. “They were tired, so they called it early, and—”
Jisung tore out of his chair, pushing past Jeongin with an apology as he took off running. The apartment door slammed behind him, and by some chance you hadn’t even left the hallway yet. You stood at the elevator, shifting the two bags you carried into one hand so that you could keep the box tucked underneath it (a new jacket from one of your friends, proudly bought at a sale you were upset to miss entirely). The box began to slip from your grip, and Jisung rushed over, catching it before it could hit the floor.
“Oh. Hey,” you smiled at him. “I thought you left.”
“I was outside,” he said. “Jeongin said you were tired…?”
The elevator doors opened before you, and you turned away to step on, holding out an arm to keep them open so that Jisung could join you. “I mean… I am, a little. But… I dunno, I figured if you left then maybe we should start winding down.”
“It isn’t my birthday.” He leaned against the elevator wall, the doors sliding shut and beginning their descent down. “You didn’t need me there to celebrate.”
“Yeah, I did.” You bumped your shoulder against his own. “Chris told me how much you helped out. Said you practically planned the entire thing.”
That wasn’t true—it’d been a group effort. Jisung made sure of that. Sure, he might have helped with making sure everyone who had offered to bring something knew what they were bringing and brought it today, but that was just him wanting this to go smoothly. He’d do it for anyone he cared about. His feelings for you just made him a little more nervous about it all. “He’s just trying to make me sound cooler.”
“Well… He doesn’t have to. I think you’re cool as-is.”
Jisung felt his cheeks grow warmer, and he reached into his jacket pocket. “I got you something, by the way. I was going to give it to you when you were opening gifts, but…” It’s personal, isn’t it? He trailed off, offering the little box out to you. “It isn’t much, but—”
“You didn’t have to,” your gaze softened as you accepted the box, setting your bags down next to you. “You honestly could have said the party was your gift to me and I’d be flattered. Can I…?”
He nodded. Carefully, you pulled the ribbon holding the lid onto the box, and peeked inside before immediately looking up at him again.
“Jisung, you…” You pouted at him. “You’re really cute.”
So he took a chance. “Happy birthday,” he said softly. “Do you want to get lunch sometime? … Just us?”
Your shoulders slumped in relief. “Oh, thank god, I wasn’t misreading you,” you had muttered under your breath, but Jisung caught every word as his heart soared. You picked up your bags as the elevator began to slow to a halt. “I’d love to.”
