As depicted in the illustration, it combines the crosses of these countries united under one sovereign- England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
History
1603- The union of the English and Scottish crowns where James VI became the king of England and Ireland as James I. 1606- King James proclaimed the creation of one flag that would represent the whole of United Kingdom Hence we get the Flag of the Kingdom of Great Britain.
Tumblr media
Now, since Wales was considered a part of the kingdom at the time, it was considered a part of the Cross of St. George
Tumblr media
1800- The Act of Union set the kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland to merge, and this resulted in the Cross of St. Patrick's to be added on the flag. It resulted in the redesign of the Cross of St. George's to be pushed back to prevent the Cross of St. George's from merging with the Cross of St. Patrick's.
