In series 14, the colour of the Doctor's sonic screwdriver appears to largely correlate to whether the episode is set in the past or future:

"The Church on Ruby Road" Present day. Screwdriver colour: blue.

"Space Babies" Future (21506). Screwdriver colour: blue.

"The Devil's Chord" Past (1963). Screwdriver colour: red.

"Boom" Future (5187). No screwdriver appearance.

"73 Yards" Present day, and an alternate timeline. No screwdriver appearance.

"Dot and Bubble" It's hard to tell due to various factors (namely the Finetimers not actually being human, check that literally blue blood), but it might be the future ("Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" is a real song from 1960). Screwdriver colour: blue.

"Rogue" Past (1813). Screwdriver colour: red.

The show has done Doctor-related colour cues for past and future episodes before: in series 5 (2010), the Eleventh Doctor typically wears a blue bowtie in past-set stories and red in future stories, although this is not 100% and this wardrobe choice was abandoned in his later seasons.

I'm late in watching La Pluie (I went to see a Flamenco show last night!) and I wasn't going to go deep into the colours (because @respectthepetty and others already have, and excellently so [and I'm about to reblog their posts]) but I feel like the show was really slapping us all in the face with these outfits and I couldn't not share scream about it.

Yes, yes, Lomfon is in green and all but Tien lost his colour! 😭 (I'm choosing to guess that the logo on his shirt says 'Forever' [with maybe a mountain/forest design above] - connecting to the "Stay with me forever, okay?" that Lomfon asks him later [and maybe Tai and Patts in Chiang Mai later])

The teacher. In such a bright yellow and green?! Hoo hoo slap!

And Tien almost solely in green and brown in Lomfon's film.

Blue, green, AND yellow in a mountain/meadow design with "Personal Growth" when Lomfon confesses and Tien responds positively?!? Slaaap. (Of course, also Lomfon having green on his shirt again).

But I admit, I lost it at the yellow socks.

Tai in his blue stripes with a subtle green interspersed, but also the yellow behind his head. And I know it's product placement but a yellow drink next to Lomfon?! Please!

And Dream supporting Tai in not only his blue stripes but also his deeper yellow when Patts tells her he'll never love anyone else. Slap!

The blue and yellow in the hotel picture, and yellow in the cushions. AND Bow being flanked by yellow and blue whilst holding a green phone in their video call. Ssssslap.

Of course the yellow bike...but the small blue windmill on his helmet?! 😂 (And the yellow and blue bag of course).

And then for the reunion - Tai is in his stripes covered by Patts' solid blue with a background of blue, whilst Patts is in his own solid blue t-shirt covered by the light yellow jacket and with a background of yellow. SLAP.

Last few!...Lomfon in green (with more green writing) and Tien with green and yellow stripes!

And Tien and Tai's mother in blue, with a green drink and food, feeding her new husband an orange, and with a sunflower behind them!

And the one that slapped the hardest, I laughed out loud...both of them in Tai's stripes with Patts' having a solid blue top and Tai's not.

The show looked at the assignment, gave us hints and had us guessing for a while, but then at the end just threw it all at us.

the night dream colour (un)coordination -> part III

we got individual character colour meltdowns in the first two. this one is a meltdown about

to start us off. dream and night are very definitely orange/neutral boys when they’re TOGETHER.

like that is definitely their colour. and i have the suspicion that when Dream’s focus is Night, he’s an orange boy through and through.

however, namwan’s palette with dream is neutral tones like greys, beiges, and browns. meanwhile dream’s palette for namwan swops between light and dark. (and i actually have the suspicion it’s a light pink because i think the orange in the right photo has to do with his later scene with night and not really anything about namwan)

in saying all this, namwan’s “palette” for night is… feminine to the max…. and innocent….

meanwhile for the first time in two episodes, night is firmly A Colour Boy (instead of neutrals i mean). he is most definitely and assuredly a blue boy with namwan. past or present that is clearly not up for debate.

(also please note how in both scenes there’s a “distractor” between them. in the past it’s the sliver of closed blinds (even though the rest of the blinds are open?) and in the present it’s the tiki torch)

but he’s a black/white boy with dream. because even when he’s wearing blue for namwan there’s bits of white in there. on top of that he usually a solid colour boy but when he’s wearing blue for namwan with the knowledge that he will also be with dream his solid colour immediately gets patchy as if he’s trying to split himself apart. HAH i’m going insane.

(these two scenes are both in the present)

(very intriguing to me that you can only see the three of them in this scene despite the fact that there are two other people at this table) (also look how there’s no longer really a barrier between night and dream. look how namwan is not really a barrier between them).

so in conclusion:

there IS colour. but it’s sort of jumpy.

my theory is that dream was a yellow and blue boy in the past, and now he’s a pink and blue boy. but he’s always orange with night.

night is a neutrals boy through and through, but more white boy than anything else. unless he’s with dream and then he’s a black boy. he’s also a blue boy only with namwan.

namwan is neutrals as a character, but swops between colours depending on if she’s with night or dream. with night she’s more feminine. with dream she’s more laid back and closer to her neutrals. (does that mean she’s changing herself for night or as a neutrals girl she can just code switch well? mhmmm)

Colour-coding magical girls runs into problems when I run out of colours. This character wants to be navy or red but I’ve already got navy (the smart one) and red (the punk one), as well as green (the leader) and yellow (the heart).

This character is the butch, sporty one. Pink is traditional for the Heart member of a magical girl ensemble, I suppose I could switch out yellow for pink and thereby free up yellow, but she doesn’t feel like a yellow. Yellow (well, gold) might work for the leader and free up green … And she can’t really be purple or black because those are reserved for your Dark Magical Girls …
